Linda Smith - In This

Thanks to Slumberland Records
Baltimore's Linda Smith was in a great NYC folk band called The Woods who released one excellent single on Kurt Ralske's Justine label. She then took her unique folk aesthetic home and embarked on a series of lovely home-recorded cassettes on her own Preference label that sacrficed nothing in songwriting quality or emotional impact to their lo-fi hominess.

A three song single on Harriet drawn from those tapes only reinforced the strength of Linda's vision, a unique bastion of classicist songcraft with as much in common with Magnetic Fields as the artists on Xpressway and Shrimper. We were excited to sign her up for the great little ep and think you'll enjoy its minimalist strum as much as we do.

Kids On A Crime Spree - To Mess With Dynamite

Thanks to Slumberland Records
About a decade ago Mario Hernandez (of Ciao Bella & From Bubblegum To Sky) was casually sitting on a Stockholm couch drinking a really good cup of coffee when a friend put on the "Back To Mono" box set and Hernandez's life was forever changed. He was instantly drawn in by the excellent songwriting and lush instrumental arrangements; and what started out as an innocent side trip into the Phil Spector back catalog soon became a longtime fascination with the Brill Building and Spector's fabled wall of sound.

As time passed he realized that he just couldn't get away from it. He kept coming back to the idea of a simple pop song that wasn't really that simple – a happy melody with a dark underpinning in the lyric– and he knew that it wasn't enough to just listen. He had to make his own version of this great sounding stuff. Kids On a Crime Spree is the result of this obsession.

After living in New York for a spell to more fully immerse himself in the culture that spawned the music he loved, Hernandez moved back to California and began recording in earnest. Of the more than one hundred songs he composed but was not able to record while in New York, eight of the best were chosen for We Love You So Bad, Kids On a Crime Spree's first record. Much care was taken to use older recording techniques akin to those used in the sixties in the Brill Building and the whole record was recorded on analog tape.

As recording progressed Hernandez brought in friends to help record and to recreate his songs in a live setting. Things came together quickly since they had all played together in the past and before long they had mastered they songs and were ready to play out. Key to the Kids On A Crime Spree sound is the simple yet driving drumming of Becky Barron (of #Poundsign#, Scrabbel & From Bubblegum To Sky), and the perpetually drenched in reverb guitar of Bill Evans (of From Bubblegum To Sky). From the punchy power-pop of "I Don't Wanna Call You Baby, Baby" to the classic 70s handclap-driven glam-pop of "Sweet Tooth" and the Ramones-y "To Mess With Dynamite," We Love You So Bad shows Hernandez and Kids On a Crime Spree's mastery of pop history and distinctive song-writing chops. "Jean-Paul Sartre 2" wraps the EP up in fine fashion, a feedback-drenched gem with a riff that most bands would just kill for. It's a perfect way to end this great debut release and points the way forward to what we hope is a lot more great pop from Mario, Becky and Bill.

Steve Jackson (of Belle & Sebastian) - Man Of God

Glasgow’s Belle & Sebastian are taking a breather after one exhaustive tour that saw them support last year’s Write About Love, but don’t let that get you down. Guitarist (and sometimes vocalist) Stevie Jackson returns in the band’s stead with (I Can’t Get No) Stevie Jackson, his debut solo effort. The 12-track effort is now available digitally through Jackson’s website, with a physical release to follow on October 24th.

I Fight Dragons – Save World Get Girl
Chiptune nerd-rockers I Fight Dragons have been gleefully fusing Nintendo MIDI effects and power pop-punk to geekgasming results for just a few short years, but they’ve already amassed quite a following. “Save World Get Girl” is surely a winner in any nerd’s heart based on name alone.

Dreamers of the Ghetto – State of a Dream
Dreamers of the Ghetto eptiomizes a lot of what makes the Midwest so distinct. For one, the four-piece is something of a family affair, comprised of brothers Luke and Jonathan Jones, Luke’s wife Lauren, and mutal friend Marty Sprowles. If that weren’t down-home enough, the band also hails from Bloomington, IN, the home to folk rock hero John Mellencamp and indie rock labels Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar. But unlike their neighbors, DotG’s take on rock offers up a decidedly different lean, one the whole world, including the good folks of B-Town, will hear when their debut album Enemy/Lover drops early next month.

Thrice - Words In The Water

Mobb Deep - Illson 2012
"Illson 2012," the latest track from Queens hip-hop heroes Mobb Deep, was produced by Aaron LaCrate for his Milkcrate Athletics clothing line. The song brings LaCrate's aesthetic full circle by paying homage to the t-shirt design that made his brand famous. "I wanted to produce a track with the group that inspired the Illson t-shirt design, Mobb Deep," says LaCrate. "The t-shirt was worn by everyone from Jay-Z to Eminem, so it's kind of amazing to me to be able to produce the real 'Illson 2012' song with Mobb Deep, some of New York's most important MCs."

The Static Jacks - Into the Sun (RAC Remix)
New Jersey-based indie rock group The Static Jacks are hitting the road in support of their debut album, If You're Young, which was released in August. While their album blends punk, garage and soul sounds, the bright and synth-filled remix to their track "Into the Sun" has pure dance vibes. Andrew Maury's RAC Maury is responsible for the upbeat remix to the track.
The Static Jacks' guitarist Henry Kaye notices the sunny quality the remix has and tells Rolling Stone, "Andrew Maury's RAC remix makes me feel like we're cruising down a street in Miami with all of those tall pastel colored art deco buildings. It is now a true sun-filled song."

The Field - Then It's White
Swedish techno alchemist the Field has a new album out, the BNM-imprinted Looping State of Mind; listen to a cut from that record, "Then It's White", below. Near the end of next month, he's heading to North America for a three-week tour in support of the album.

That's it for this week, folks. I wish you all a great week-end, and we'll be back on Monday morning. In case you get bored, there's still some "Rock In Rio" left to go for this week-end, on youtube
