Psychic Ills - Hazed Dream (album stream)

Sacred Bones Records is proud to present Hazed Dream, the new long-player from fellow New Yorkers, Psychic Ills.

Psychic Ills is an experimental rock band from New York. The current line-up consists of Elizabeth Hart (bass), Brian Tamborello (drums) and Tres Warren (guitar, vocal, synthesizer).

Since their formation in 2003 as a home-recording experiment, the Ills have evolved into a live band, in their ele- ment playing the extended jam. Musically, it also marks a departure from some of the band’s more recent sonic explorations. The raga rumbles and synthesizer space-outs aren’t gone all together; the singular blasted musical perspective of the Ills remains. Fans new and old will find it totally dreamy.

Tres Warren, 4th of July, 2011: Some developments in our lives led to new approaches. The music came out the old fashioned way...a way that had been avoided for a while. It was about putting some words to some chords and keeping it simple. Getting back to something. Feeling a feeling. Shaking out the NY brain boil. Movin’ away from some old bad vibes, by creating some new good ones. Dreaming out the bad. Takin’ it easy on ourselves, and those around us. This album lives in a sunny place. A half memory. A hazed dream.

“Faced with a deluge of groove-based psych, many listeners failed to notice Psychic Ills peculiar idiosyncrasy, and they got subsumed. Now that all is quiet, or quieter, on the kaleidoscopic rock front, it’s easier to hear the radical economy that sets them apart. While most freaked-out churners give in to the temptation to throw everything into the cauldron and boil, Psychic Ills cherry- pick their ingredients and slow roast till golden... a mirror in a desert gently turning in the breeze” – The Wire

History
The band took shape in 2003. Electronic-centered home recordings led to a self-released 7-inch, Mental Violence I, after which the group became engaged in the New York music scene, toured the North East and recorded their first record for The Social Registry, a 12-inch, Mental Violence II.

Their first full length album, Dins, was released in early 2006 with the painting, "Three Hairs and Shadow" by German Fluxus artist Wolf Vostell as the cover art. After Dins was released, the band embarked on a full year of touring. Early Violence, a collection of early and out of print tracks was released later that year digitally and on CD. The Village Voice bestowed them "Best Psych Rock Band" in their 2006 "Best of NYC" issue.

In early 2008 they performed in Marfa, Texas for the opening of the Hello Meth Lab In The Sun art installation, and at the Contemporary Art Museum in Bordeaux France for the IAO festival. In 2009 they released Mirror Eye and toured the US with Butthole Surfers. In 2010, they've had four releases; two limited edition 12-inches, Astral Occurrence, through the Australian imprint, The Spring Press and "Catoptric" through The Social Registry, as well as "Telesthetic Tape", a cassette through Danish tape label Skrot Up and a remix record, FRKWYS VOL. 4: PSYCHIC ILLS through RVNG INTL, with remixes by Juan Atkins, Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers and Hans-Joachim Irmler our Faust.

Members of Psychic Ills have been involved in various other projects. Brian Tamborello has participated in the Boredoms Boadrum projects and played drums on Mike Wexler's record Sun Wheel. Elizabeth Hart plays bass with Effi Briest and performs with the improvisational dance and music ensemble Skint with members of Excepter and Telepathe. Tres Warren collaborates with Taketo Shimada as Messages, with Nathan Corbin of Excepter as Brainscan and with Drew McDowall of Coil as Compound Eye. He has also performed live as Golden Tongues with Matty McDermott of Nymph and in former Can singer Damo Suzuki’s Network.
