Native Detroit rapper Kash Doll was born Arkeisha Knight in 1992. By her early twenties, Knight channeled her life-long love of hip-hop and performance into concentrated efforts to begin a rap career, leaving behind work as an exotic dancer, adopting the Kash Doll moniker, and booking gigs in the Detroit area in 2014.

After dropping the well-received single covering AV's "Run Me My Money," Kash Doll released her first mixtape, K.R.E.A.M. Kash Rules Everything Around Me, in early 2015 with production on some tracks from 808 Mafia member Purps. Late the next year, she returned with another online mixtape, Keisha vs. Kash Doll. The single "For Everybody" appeared in early 2017, followed a year later by the Brat Mail mixtape and the single "Ice Me Out," the latter of which performed well with a remix featuring 2 Chainz. During 2019, she toured with Meek Mill, and continued to run her company, Kash Doll Enterprises, which performs charity work in her hometown and earned her the Spirit of Detroit award.

Please welcome Joyero, the new songwriting project of Andy Stack, to Merge Records! In addition to his role as one half of Wye Oak, Stack has gained notoriety in recent years as a multi-instrumental collaborator with Lambchop, EL VY, Helado Negro, Madeline Kenney, and Thor Harris, among others.

With his debut solo record as Joyero, Andy Stack of Wye Oak puts his own voice front and center. Written and recorded primarily in Marfa, Texas, during a transitional moment between records, cities, and relationships, Release the Dogs occupies its own liminal space between the natural and the man-made, between the structures we create to keep ourselves safe and the terrifying enormity that exists beyond them.

Throughout the record, organic and electronic elements are seamlessly woven together into a single fabric that can be both intimate and explosive, as evidenced by “Steepest Stairs” which arrives ahead of the album with a music video shot back in West Texas. As Stack states: “It’s a song about feeling like an outsider, and finding some peace in that.”

The Parlotones release cinematic music video for brand new single “Antidote”

“The Parlotones – China” Album Available Online And In All Good Music Stores Nationwide.

The Parlotones release their latest single “Antidote” from the current studio album China and drop with it a brilliant cinematic Siren inspired music video.

Written by Parlotones member Rob Davidson, “Antidote” plays with a dark theme while wrapped in an upbeat 80’s inspired feel. Davidson delves into the writing and production of the song, adding: “The song tackles the theme of ‘last chances’ and admitting fault in one’s self. It pleads for one more shot at being the person the other one deserves by changing their selfish ways and growing as a person. Originally written as a piano ballad, it took on an 80’s synth pop vibe reminiscent of Pet Shop Boys/Depeche Mode to create a more upbeat song but with a darker undertone. It asks for forgiveness but also knows you have to sleep in the bed you made.”

The music video adds a brilliant visual scape to the song with the concept inspired by the lyrics taken from the chorus. “The idea came from the lyrics ‘You’re the ocean, I’m the sea. You’re the voice that calls to me’, which in my opinion represented the lust struggles of the Sirens and sailors,” explains Music Video Director, Ryan du Toit from Dutwaa Creative Agency+. He continues, saying “The story to be told was a reflection of love struggles in today’s life, which is shown in the video by visualising ‘capture, lust, allure, death and entrapment’. During the video the idea was to show all the past lovers dead in the water, but all warning signs are ignored. A man set on course to find love no matter the consequences.”

The Parlotones are renowned for delivering incredible music videos and the same is to be said for “Antidote”.

The video was filmed on location in Sasolburg in a container which was converted into a Water tank. With so many cleverly worked shots and scenes around the concept, one is an interesting addition. While watching the “Antidote” music video, the viewer will see the Siren releasing eggs from her mouth. What happens here? Du Toit clears it all up. “In order to crudely show ‘an act of lust and sex’ without having sex – the Siren passes eggs from her mouth in order to impregnate his thoughts that she’s the one or ‘trust me – I love you’. The Egg scene also shows how generally weak men are when a woman unfolds her beauty. Eventually a story unfolds of a Siren who lustfully attracts a man into her world. It seems she gets captured by him or ‘kept’, but who is the one being captured? Unfortunately for the man it turns out to be himself and he suffers like her past lovers…… DEATH BY LOVE.”

The band’s 20th anniversary sees a brand new studio album titled ‘CHINA’ released both locally and internationally. Recorded over a four month period at High Seas Studios in Johannesburg, the creative process commenced with lead singer Kahn spending a period of time in England with a selection of renowned songwriters to establish the path the album would take.

Working with the likes of two time Ivor Novello Award winner and Grammy nominated songwriter Sacha Skarbek (best known for writing James Blunt’s hit singles “You’re Beautiful” and “Goodbye My Lover” as well having worked with artists such as Adele, Lana Del Rey, Jason Mraz, Tears for Fears, and many more), Richard Archer (singer-songwriter, lead vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter of indie rock band Hard-Fi), Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly musician Sam Duckworth and a selection of other songwriters the foundation of the album was born.

The album offers 14 tracks that are sure to appeal to the band’s fans around the world, as well as open them up to a whole new audience with their ever-evolving sound, yet still maintaining that signature Parlotones sound.

“It’s quite an exciting year for us, releasing a new album to celebrate 2 decades coupled with a local and international tour…it’s kinda surreal coz it feels as fresh and as exciting as when we first started but it’s an adventure that’s spanned 20 years”, says Kahn Morbee. “We are really looking forward to bringing a new, yet familiar sound to all of our fans and allowing them to interpret what each song means to them. The songs mirror the human journey and reflects our melancholic as well as blissful sides laced with questions about life and our perspectives. We’re all thrilled about the end result and can’t wait to share it with the world”
The Parlotones may have been together for a lifetime, but their journey has only just begun….

The Viking Rocker Emerges : Rocky Kramer releases official music video for “Rock Star”

Hailing from the Scandinavian Peninsula country of Norway, Rocky Kramer is truly a modern day Viking, poised to take no prisoners as he conquers the hearts, minds and souls of rockers around the world! Armed with a guitar, this graduate of Metal 101 constitutes a triple threat as a composer, vocalist and formidable musician.

Check out the official music video for Rock Star by Rocky Kramer below. The Rock Star single comes out July 30th. The Firestorm album comes out August 13th.

Born in the 1990’s to musician parents, few could have known that Rocky would inherit his parents’ passion for music, ultimately transforming into Norway’s ambassador of rock.  While some homes have a piano, Rocky’s home had two – one for the upstairs and another for the downstairs. Although Rocky’s father was the first violinist in the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, his mother was an accomplished pianist in her own right.  At the age of four, young Rocky began exploring this massive instrument. Rocky recalls “I was fascinated when I discovered I could play a melody!”  Filled with musical curiosity, the four year old began banging out rudimentary melodies that foreshadowed the composer he would become.

At the age of five, tragedy struck when Rocky’s mother succumbed to cancer, leaving Rocky, his older brother and their father to fend for themselves.  Rocky laments that “my father immediately took on the responsibility of raising two unruly boys by himself.” Shortly after his wife’s passing, the professional violinist was attempting to teach Rocky’s brother how to play the violin. As the older sibling unsuccessfully attempted to follow his father’s instruction, young Rocky volunteered to give it a go. To his father’s astonishment, five year old Rocky demonstrated incredible skill as he traversed the smallest stringed instrument, with its horsehair bow.  Little did Rocky know that his adept performance that one day would lead to conflict and turmoil that would haunt him for years, while developing him into one of the most prolific composers and profound guitarists to hit the rock scene in decades.

With a budding virtuoso on his hands, Rocky’s father encouraged violin lessons and even supplemented those lessons with private tutoring from the master himself.  On one hand Rocky knew that he was lucky to have such an accomplished violinist teaching him to master his instrument – but – there was one problem. Rocky yearned to play more contemporary instruments, such as the drums and guitar. To a virtuoso violinist, such tools of the rock world were simply blasphemous. For years the prodigal son played violin by day and rocked out at night on friends’ guitars and drums.  Requests for such trite instruments for birthdays and Christmas were met with a resounding “NO!” Soon the ember became a burning desire. Being an ardent fan of Ace Frehley, Rocky Saved his allowance, birthday offerings and all other earnings, eventually buying his first guitar – “a Les Paul Double Cut knock-off,” recalls Rocky.  It didn’t take long before Rocky discovered he was “a Fender® man;” a religion validated by his other lifelong influence, Yngwie Malmsteen – himself a Fender® worshipper. When asked what made the guitar standout, Rocky remembers falling “in love with the guitar because of its freedom; the sounds [he] could make with an electric guitar just weren’t possible given the inherent limitations of a violin.” Although he is also an accomplished pianist, the eighty-eights just seemed “too traditional” for his rocker tastes.  But there was one other instrument that caught Rocky’s eye – the drums. Unsurprisingly, Rocky managed to find drum sets at school and rehearsal halls to quench his thirst for percussion, ultimately becoming an incredibly agile drummer. The deadlock between drums and guitar was finally broken when Rocky assembled his first band. It seems there was someone else amongst his friends who could play drums, while Rocky was the only one capable of manhandling an axe. Rocky’s instrument of choice was then settled.

Although guitar became Rocky’s weapon of choice, the clash between father and son over that choice intensified.  But it was too late, the admiration Rocky felt for guitar was inescapable as the fire burned deeper with every passing day.  To his credit, Rocky’s father finally capitulated to his son’s mania, embracing the overall love for music over his own desire to see a son follow in his footsteps.  Throughout a couple of years, Rocky put together a number of bands, including Svidd Rock, Psycho Soldiers, Black Magic, Dark Symphony and finally Armed Science.  By the age of 16, Rocky’s bands had become legendary amongst local audiences, even racking up top honors with Armed Science at the UKM Regional Music Competition, just short of the national championship.

Having begun writing songs on the family piano at age four, Rocky literally wrote his first album at the age of 13, his second album followed a year later, with yet a third album emerging a year after that. At the age of 17 Rocky completed his fourth album. Amazingly, each are concept albums that speak to the maelstrom that often challenge youth during their formative years, as experienced by this adroit and poignant raconteur. By the time Rocky reached high school, he and his many bands had become well known throughout Trondheim, with recognition coming in from around the country. Feeling a level of dedication that transcended that of his fellow band members, Rocky decided to focus on developing his skills as a singer / songwriter, making a number of appearances as a solo artist.  Picking up a keyboard and learning to record his own music enabled Rocky to begin creating music demos for his four completed albums.  With the strong background in classical music imparted on him by his father, Rocky began combining the genres of music to create his own unique sound.  What emerged might be properly classified as metal symphonies for the rock enthusiast!  After spending a year in university studying film, Rocky left for the United States to augment his already impressive English language skills.  Although Norwegian is his native language, Rocky felt from a very early age that he could best convey music in the English language.  Consequently, he now speaks English quite fluently.

While attending school in the United States, Rocky caught the attention of the Allied Artists Music Group, who soon inked a deal with this inimitable musician.  Stephan Bauer, President of Allied Artists Music Group (Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones)  comments that “Rocky is the essence of modern metal, mixed with a tenacity that makes for rock legends” adding that “those of us at Allied Artists are proud to have him on the label and look forward to introducing him to today’s audiences who will find his music invigorating and his message captivating.”  Perhaps as a portent of things to come, Rocky was voted 2012’s Best New Male Rock Musician by the editors of Rock Over America Magazine and was recently welcomed as a new member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (“The Grammys”).

Rocky proudly plays and endorses Fender® Guitars, ENGL Amps, DigiTech® / DOD Effects Pedals, JH Audio In-Ear Monitors, ClearTone Strings® and Jim Dunlop® Jazz III Guitar Picks & Cry Baby® Wah Wah.  Indeed, Rocky only endorses products he truly enjoys playing.

In 2018, with four albums under his belt and thousands of shows behind him, Texas singer-songwriter-guitarist Cas Haley was dividing his time between touring and spending time with his wife and kids on his Texas farm. He'd grown up immersed in ska/punk/skateboard culture and the classic reggae-pop of bands like UB40 and Sublime. He'd long since absorbed the hard-knock lessons of his runner-up finish on an early season of America's Got Talent. He'd worked with indie reggae label Easy Star Records, made other fruitful collaborations, and shared stages with the likes of UB40, Nahko and Medicine for the People, and Trevor Hall. All along, he'd gone his own independent way, building an enviable career on the road and in the studio.

Then came the jolt. His wife, Cassy, had a dangerous form of breast cancer. Surgery and chemo were in the cards. Suddenly life seemed a much darker place.

But writing together with Cassy, who was discovering a new strain of creativity as a songwriter, proved to be a big part of the family's journey back to health. The lyrics to "Open Eyes," which became the new album's lead single, popped into Cas's head while they were driving to a follow-up appointment after Cassy's surgery: "Confusion laid its claim on me/Open eyes but still can't see." The aptly named new album Lessons and Blessings comes out June 21, 2019 on Jimmy Buffett's label Mailboat Records.

Lessons and Blessings features collaborations with Mihali Savoulidis (Twiddle), bluesman Seth Walker, and Josh Heinrichs. Cas and his band are slated to perform at major festivals this summer and fall, including the Electric Forest Festival in Michigan, the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival, Shangri-La, Galactic Get Down, Project Earth, VIBE HIGH, and the MO ROOTS Music and Arts Festival.

TREVOR DRURY RELEASES HAUNTING ‘CHAPTER 4’

Alt-pop singer-songwriter Trevor Drury released his latest single, “Chapter 4,” only moments ago. “Chapter 4” is from his forthcoming EP, Alice, It’s All In Your Head. On Trevor Drury’s latest single, the hypno-symphonic power pop-rock ballad “Chapter 4,” the multi-talented singer-songwriter intimately chronicles the closing of a special romantic chapter in his life. Though the song laments an impending breakup, he offers a glimmer of hope that he may see her again in the mysterious next chapter the song title refers to.

The song articulates the exquisitely complex emotions surrounding the cessation of a romantic liaison. Yet even as one chapter ends, another may open.

Drury explains “Chapter 4, “I am a big fan of sounds that have movement to them and records that evolve and tell a story. I don’t like creating generic pop stuff, and feel bored with the idea of doing that. If I hear a pop song, even if it’s a big hit, I’ll think what if they had made it bigger and added a choir or took their vocal and crunched it into guitar grittiness. These things jump out at me as a way to make the song cooler and more interesting.”

The turning pages of the multi-talented 23-year old’s ever-evolving life story create a perfect metaphor for his burgeoning career as an
indie artist creating hip, contemporary alt pop flavored with indie rock, jazz and a distinct retro flair. The infectious “Chapter 4” represents the promising next phase of a dynamic journey that began in 2016 with the release of his stripped-down piano and vocal only debut The Start.

Over the past few years, Trevor has released a handful critically acclaimed tracks that have received hundreds of thousands of views on Spotify, including “I Know You From the 70’s,” “Jealousy,” “Snowy Nights” and “Trip to the Water.” His most recent single, “Head on the Tracks,” a dramatic look at anxiety and self-absorption, recently premiered in Clash Magazine in the UK. In addition to receiving great reviews, it’s playing on multiple US radio stations from Maine to Hawaii.

“Head on the Tracks” will join “Chapter 4” as part of the singer’s highly anticipated soon to drop new multi-track project,
the quirkily titled Alice It’s All In Your Head – whose title track is a fascinating, trippy glam pop-grunge song whose title popped
into his consciousness as graffiti on an abandoned train at a station near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego during the filming of the provocative video (now on YouTube) of “Head on the Tracks.” Each track is a large-scale production featuring cello and string arrangements by Dave Eggar, whose hundreds of pop superstar credits include “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay.

While The Start offered a dynamic showcase for Trevor’s gorgeous balladry, spirited piano pounding, powerful vocals and insightful, emotional storytelling, he has taken his artistry and sonic dimensions of his artistry to a fresh, inspiring level since hooking up for “Jealousy” with veteran producer and two time Grammy winning songwriter Marc Swersky. While perhaps best known for prominent songs recorded by Joe Cocker and Hillary Duff, Swersky has become the go-to guy behind the boards for a wide range of independent artists, including The Chordaes, Ashley Delima and DR King. The Swersky-produced tracks are mixed by 11-time Grammy nominee Mark Needham, who has worked with everyone from Fleetwood Mac and The Killers to Elton John, Pink and Imagine Dragons.

Though Trevor is credited as songwriter and Swersky as producer on the singer’s tracks, they are truly collaborative efforts. “I don’t think the songs would sound anywhere as powerful and impactful as they do without Marc,” Trevor says. “This is the first time I have worked with other musicians, and Marc instinctively knew who to bring in to flesh out my piano oriented demos into full productions – including the opera singer who sang with me on ‘Alice.’  “A great producer is one who knows how to reach into you as an artist and pull out the essence of your idea,” he adds, “honoring what you want from the song while offering new insights on where it can go sonically. Its really cool to hear these tunes I create on the piano suddenly come to life with this massive sound. I can sit back and listen to them as if they’re someone else’s work but every track represents my final vision. Marc works his magic, but they always feel like me.”

Born in Tucson and raised in San Diego, Trevor began playing piano at 8 years of age, developing his offbeat musical aesthetic with a passion throughout his formative years while soaking in everything from Elvis and Queen to Radiohead. After a year at San Diego State, he moved to NYC to pursue a modeling career while writing and producing music on the side. The men’s face of Tom Ford in the 2016 fall campaign, Trevor has worked with such notable designers as Hermes, Robert Geller, Timo Weiland and Malan Breton, and has graced the pages of Details Magazine. Trevor currently is with Ken Harvey Management, New York Models (NYC), Sight Models (Spain), Core Models (Germany), D’Man (Italy) and State Models (Los Angeles).

While enjoying great success in the modeling world, Trevor has  continued to develop his musical vision and hone his artistry. In 2018, he moved the UK to study vocal performance at the British Irish Modern Music (BIMM) Institute. Trevor recently had the opportunity to tour Europe and Japan as the opening act for Ramin Karimloo, a well-known Broadway and West End performer. He is currently gearing up to return to NYC, where he plans to resume his modeling while focusing on creating more music and performing live.

“I am a big fan of sounds that have movement to them and records that evolve and tell a story,” he says. “I don’t like creating generic pop stuff, and feel bored with the idea of doing that. If I hear a pop song, even if it’s a big hit, I’ll think, what if they had made it bigger and added a choir or took their vocal and crunched it into guitar grittiness. These things jump out at me as a way to make the song cooler and more interesting. Marc is totally on the same page as I am in that respect. We like creating things we have never heard before. To that end, for every track we’re doing together now, we will have three versions: the one on the recording, a live version with a band and an acoustic version. It’s fun to try different arrangements to play with the emotions of a song. Like with ‘Head on the Tracks,’ it’s a big massive anthem type tune which I can then play acoustically as a slow ballad to offer a totally unique perspective.”

J Fontaine - "Que Lo Que" [Latin]

Que Lo Que

"Que Lo Que" music video by J Fontaine
Added: 05-08-2019
Genre : Latin
Description : Feel Good Summer Music with a Spanish Style Vibe

J. Fontaine releases some feel good summer music with a Spanish style vibe with visuals for “Que Lo Que”

“I can’t think of a place that I would rather be then at night under festive lights with some light Spanish guitar music and a warm summer breeze and I am hoping that this song captures that essence.”
– J Fontaine

It’s not hard to fathom that the Urban culture can influence various people from all walks of life but some might have to do a double take when that individual is of Italian descent and is so immersed within the culture he might be mistaken for a poser. Yet J. Fontaine, who is Pennsylvania born and Jersey bred, knows the uphill battle that awaits, but doesn’t let the criticisms of outsiders worry him, especially when those assessments are only skin deep. While it’s easy for one to claim they live this life, J. Fontaine has the proof to back up such a declaration.

He emerged on the scene as break-dancer, His crew made a name for themselves including bookings of national campaigns, commercials as well as music video appearances. Now while Fontaine loved to break-dance, he was even more passionate when it came to feeding his creative capabilities and that hunger combined with his dissatisfaction of DJs’ music selections in the clubs eventually led him to experiment with blending different beats on turntables. His record collection began to increase as he took a deeper interest in the art of music making. He would then play with the verses, often rapping along with records while creating his own wordplay in the process. In attempts to better his techniques and craft, Fontaine began reading some material not only on music but the industry as a whole. He put forth his communication skills and started networking and associating himself with elite members of the industry. His networking became so serious that with a few phone calls, he could reach who ever needed to be reached and a couple of those calls led J. Fontaine to record his first few tracks with contestants that were featured on American Idol.

By his own admission, he doesn’t excel at just any one trait; his strengths come from his ability to perform, the music production and his passion and work ethic, which make him continue to stand out. But even with success he has experienced as a break-dancer and the accomplishments as an artist [starring alongside J-Woww in the movie “The Mint” and the movie “Worthless” Starring Tara Reid, as well as appearing on DJ’s Clue’s MTV show Direct Effect.] Maybe naysayers still won’t give J. Fontaine respect as a break-dancer, rapper, or a producer, that’s ok with him because everything that he’s putting on his resume is leading up to him becoming a mogul!

Genre : R'n'B, Soul, Funk
Description :

Arielle was born and raised in the small town of Durham, North Carolina but always had big city dreams. As a young girl, it was normal to find Arielle singing in her mirror or shower, but her most favorite place to sing was the on the phone – while unfortunately making her friends listen to her vocals and judge her as if she was a contestant on American Idol. Although this may have been more effective if Arielle did not make sure she won every time, she knew one day these nettlesome, yet encouraging, phone calls will become reality.

Upon graduating from college, Arielle decided to take her love for music to the next level and give her dreams a shot. She began her career in Atlanta and has since transitioned to NYC where she is currently recording her first project. She is expecting to release her EP this year in July and is working hard to reach new heights in this industry. Through her experiences, she wants to remind every young person that with a mustard seed of faith and hard work, the sky is the limit.

Crematory is a gothic metal band formed in Mannheim, Germany in 1991.

The band received its earliest recognition in the mid-1990s by touring with My Dying Bride, Tiamat and Atrocity. Much like the latter two groups, the band had begun as traditional death metal, then evolved in an industrial music and gothic metal musical direction on later albums. The band received heavy rotation on MTV Germany, and made appearances at various extreme metal festivals, including Germany's Wacken Open Air in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2008, in addition to inclusion on Nuclear Blast compilation samplers.

The band re-signed to Massacre Records in 2006 after a 10-year stint with Nuclear Blast; Massacre had been the band's first label.

Active for over 20 years (with a brief split between 2001 and 2003) they are among one of Europe's longest running gothic metal bands.

Possessed is an American death metal band, originally formed in 1983. Noted for their fast style of playing and Jeff Becerra's growled vocals, they are often called the first band in the death metal genre. The band is also notable for featuring Larry LaLonde, who was the guitarist of Possessed during the mid-1980s, and went on to join Primus.

After breaking up in 1987, and briefly reforming from 1990 to 1993, the band reformed under original bassist and vocalist Jeff Becerra in 2007. To date, the band has released three studio albums, one live album, two compilation albums and two EPs.

Description : Armin van Buuren - Orbion (2017 Revision) [Live at The Best Of Armin Only]

‘Orbion’ was part of my ‘Mirage’ album, which I released back in 2010. I think it’s one of the most recognizable and successful instrumental Trance tracks I released in my career so far. I polished it up a bit for the ‘The Best Of Armin Only’ show to have it fit the standard of the others tracks, just like I did with ‘In And Out Of Love’.

A dance act driven by German production duo Yann Peifer (aka Yanou) and Manuel Reuter (aka Manian), R.I.O. is a vehicle for former Beat System and Future City vocalist Tony T. Born Neal Antone Dyer to Jamaican parents in London, England but raised in New York, Tony T. was approached by Peifer and Reuter -- who were experiencing great commercial success with their Cascada project -- to front some more of their club productions. R.I.O. made its debut in 2007 and quickly became a successful Euro-dance recording act; "Shine On" (2008) reached number eight on the French pop chart and number ten in Sweden, while "Turn This Club Around" peaked within the Top Five in Germany and Austria and topped the Swiss music chart. R.I.O.'s full-length output included Shine On: The Album (2010), the digital-download-only Turn This Club Around (2011), and Sunshine (2011).

Lizzo - "Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" [R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Live In Concert]

Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

"Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" music video by Lizzo

Description : Lizzo: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

July 29, 2019 | Stephen Thompson -- Lots of musicians cut corners during sound check. It's a time to make sure everyone's in tune and in balance, everyone's blocked properly for the cameras, and every piece of recording equipment is doing its job the way it's supposed to, but it's not as if anyone's rolling tape for posterity. Sometimes, Tiny Desk artists do their sound check in shabby street clothes before ducking into the green room to don their fancy performance wear. It's standard procedure, and no big deal at all.

But from the second Lizzo entered the room, fresh off a long interview with Fresh Air's Terry Gross, she was on: all charm, vibrant and gracious, dressed to the nines and ready to sing her face off. In rehearsal, Lizzo belted out "Cuz I Love You," the title track from her wonderful new album, with nothing off her fastball; if you were standing six feet away at the time, you'd swear the gale force of her voice was blowing your hair back. She was the star and the mayor rolled into one, at once ingratiating and commanding, as an audience of maybe 25 milled around and prepared to let in the crowd.

Once we opened the room, there were as many people as we've ever had at a Tiny Desk concert, hanging on Lizzo's every word as she held court and waited for the cameras to roll. She literally needed no introduction; one of us usually says a few words and gets the crowd to applaud for the start of the performance, but Lizzo was master of ceremonies from the second she walked in. Naturally, she needed all of two seconds to blow everyone's hair back once more.

Everything around the singer must have felt alien to her, starting with "this tiny-ass desk" and continuing through the crowd — perched mere feet away, with only a bit of office furniture and a few cameras as a barrier — and a backing band assembled, at Bob Boilen's request, just for the occasion. Lizzo usually performs with dancers and a backing track; the former, though much-missed here, stood in the crowd and bobbed along, while the latter got mothballed in favor of slyly funky arrangements. Together, Lizzo and that brand-new band preside over three songs from Cuz I Love You: the aforementioned title track, "Truth Hurts" (so winning, in spite of its repeated references to the Minnesota Vikings) and the literal and figurative show-stopper, "Juice," which gave her the opportunity to pick up the flute she'd been waiting the whole set to bust out.
