A sleek-toned indie pop band with a warm West Coast sound, lovelytheband broke through in 2017 with the single "Broken." The song took off online, and by the following year they had landed on top of the Billboard Alternative Songs Airplay chart.

Formed in West Hollywood in 2016, lovelytheband feature former Oh Honey member Mitchy Collins along with guitarist Jordan Greenwald and drummer Sam Price. The band debuted in July 2017 with the Christian Medice-produced "Broken," a sprightly and infectious single that quickly racked up over three million digital streams. Signing with Another Century Records, lovelytheband released their debut EP, Everything I Could, in September of that year and joined Vance Joy and AWOLNATION on tour. In April 2018, "Broken" was still going strong and hit number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs Airplay chart. That August, lovelytheband returned with their full-length debut album, Finding It Hard to Smile. Once again produced by longtime collaborator Christian Medice, the album included "Broken" as well as the single "These Are My Friends."

Former I Killed the Prom Queen drummer JJ Peters founded Deez Nuts in Melbourne, Australia in 2007, taking the band's name from a Dr. Dre song. Equally influenced by hardcore punk and hip-hop, the group's lyrics focused on partying as well as hustling, and the group's 2008 debut album, Stay True, appropriately contained a cover of Beastie Boys' "Fight for Your Right." The group spent much of 2008 touring Australia and Europe, and the sophomore full-length This One's for You appeared in 2010. Deez Nuts' third album, Bout It, was released in 2013, featuring numerous guest appearances from across the hardcore scene, including members of Architects, Madball, and Suicide Silence. Their fourth album, Word Is Bond, followed in 2015, featuring more introspective, less party-centric lyrics than previous efforts. The group's fifth studio long-player, 2017's Binge & Purgatory, featured the singles "Commas & Zeroes," "Discord," and "Purgatory."

Aug. 16, 2019 | Tom Huizenga -- It's not every day someone walks into our NPR Music offices and unpacks an instrument made in 1680. And yet Kian Soltani, the 27-year-old cellist who plays with the authority and poetry of someone twice his age, isn't exactly fazed by his rare Giovanni Grancino cello, which produces large, luminous tones. (He also plays a Stradivarius.)

And if you think the notion of a cello recital isn't exactly sexy or thrilling, just take a look at Soltani; he radiates joy and ingenuity as he performs three pieces that offer virtuosity, sweet lyricism and fire.

The Hungarian Rhapsody, by the late 19th century cellist and composer David Popper, traces its inspiration to similarly titled pieces by Franz Liszt and Johannes Brahms, but showcases a number of hot-dogging tricks for the cello, including stratospheric high notes, flamboyant slides and a specific high-velocity bouncing of the bow called sautillé. Soltani nails all of them with nonchalant elegance, backed with companionable accompaniment by pianist Christopher Schmitt.

To prove he can make his instrument truly sing, Soltani worked up his own arrangement of "Nacht und Träume" (Night and Dreams) by Franz Schubert, replacing the human voice with his cello's warm, intimate vocalizing. And in the Persian Fire Dance, Soltani's own composition, flavors from his Iranian roots – drones and spiky dance rhythms – commingle with percussive ornaments.

It all adds up to well-rounded, technically astute playing from a young cellist whose career is ascending in full flight.

Kian Soltani (born 3 June 1992) is an Austrian cellist, born in Bregenz to a family of Persian musicians from Iran. He has held the post of principal cellist in Daniel Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, where he came to prominence performing Beethoven's Triple Concerto on the orchestra's 2015 tour.

He began playing the cello at the age of four and, at age 12 he began his studies with Ivan Monighetti at Basel Music Academy. He completed his studies as a member of the Young Soloist Programme at the Kronberg Academy in Taunus, Germany, and the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein. He is currently artist in residence at the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague for the 2018-2019 season.

Insomnium is a melodic death metal band from Joensuu, Finland, whose music also reveals links to other, neighboring metallic subgenres like doom, melancholy, and dark metal. Originally formed in 1997, the group released a pair of demos in 1999 and 2000 before signing a contract with England's Candlelight Records and making their full-length debut with 2002's In the Halls of Awaiting CD. Three additional albums -- Since the Day It All Came Down, Above the Weeping World, and Across the Dark -- have since followed, in 2004, 2006, and 2009, respectively, which not only confirmed Insomnium's enduring passion for their chosen musical style, but also their stable lineup consisting of Niilo Sevänen (bass/vocals), Ville Friman (guitar), Ville Vänni (guitar), and Markus Hirvonen (drums). In 2011, they switched their record label to Century Media, releasing three further albums by 2016: One for Sorrow, Shadows of the Dying Sun, and Winter's Gate.

Alongside Switzerland's Celtic Frost and Sweden's Bathory, Germany's Helloween are possibly the most influential heavy metal band to come out of Europe during the 1980s. By taking the hard-riffing and minor-key melodies handed down from metal masters like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, then infusing them with the speed and energy introduced by the burgeoning thrash metal movement, Helloween crystallized the sonic ingredients of what is now known as power metal. The group hit their commercial peak in the late 1980s with the release of the two volume Keeper of the Seven Keys, which helped make them the benchmark by which most every power metal band is measured. Their meteoric rise was interrupted by internal strife and unfortunate business decisions, but Helloween took their hard-knock lessons in stride and continued to prosper well into the 2010's in the international metal arena on their own terms.

A modern melodic hard rock outfit based out of Stockholm, Sweden, Metalite employ a soaring blend of power metal, metalcore, and electronicore that invokes names like Amaranthe, Epica, and Leaves' Eyes. Founded in 2015 by vocalist Emma Bensing, guitarist Edwin Premberg, guitarist Robert Örnesved, bassist Robert Majd, and drummer Les Larsson, the group inked a deal with the Swedish label Inner Wound Recordings in 2016. In early 2017 they issued the single "Afterlife" in anticipation of the release of their debut full-length, Heroes in Time, which arrived later that October.

The members of the Glasgow quartet Spinning Coin had all been playing in bands, writing songs, and making the scene before they joined together to make fiercely ramshackle indie pop that reminded their future label head, Stephen Pastel, of a "feeling (he) had at the end of the Boy Hairdressers and the beginning of Teenage Fanclub." They formed in late 2014 ostensibly to back guitarist Sean Armstrong on a batch of his songs, but soon took the name Spinning Coin and became something more. Made up of Armstrong (guitar and vocals), Jack Mellin (guitar and vocals), Cal Donnelly (bass), and Chris White (drums), Spinning Coin began playing shows around their hometown and caught the ear of Fuzzkill Records, which released the band's self-titled five-song debut cassette in October of 2015. This recording and their live shows brought them to the attention of Geographic Music, a label run by the Pastels and sponsored by Domino. They home-recorded their first single, "Albany"/"Sides," released it in April of 2016, and soon got to work on a full-length album. Working with producer Stu Evans in Glasgow and Edwyn Collins at his studio in Helmsdale, the band added backing vocals from the Pastels' Katrina Mitchell and Tuff Love's Rachel Taylor. The album, Permo, was issued in November of 2017 by Geographic. Around that time, Spinning Coin added Taylor to the lineup as their keyboardist.

Formed in 1999 by French black metal multi-instrumentalist Neige (who also worked with Peste Noire, Mortifera, and Amesoeurs), Alcest was originally conceived as a solo project. It would eventually take on the form of a full band as Hegnor (also of Peste Noire) and Arguth joined the fray and released a four-track demo entitled Tristesse Hivernale in 1999. This demo was a more straightforward black metal affair, much different from what would come next. After that release, Alcest returned to a one-member format, with Neige moving away from the metal overtones of the three-piece and embracing a more atmospheric approach to his work. The 2005 EP release Le Secret was more in tune with the project's ultimate goal, which was to put to ear, as it were, Neige's fascination with an "otherworld" -- of sorts -- that had held a fascination for him beginning in his childhood. In 2007, Neige released the first full-length Alcest recording, Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde ("Memories of Another World"), which was released on Prophecy Productions, and was a critical success. A split EP with Angmar was released in 2007, followed by another split with Les Discrets in 2009. In 2010, the much-anticipated full-length Écailles de Lun was released. Alcest's genre-melting renown spread across the globe with critical notices regarding the album's quality. Neige's Alcest and Prophecy Productions reissued the Le Secret EP in 2011, adding two re-recorded versions of its two songs, "Le Secret," and "Élévation," according to Neige's intentions to offer a better-produced version of the music. This new edition included drums by Winterhalter. In order to preserve the historical integrity of the original version, the 2005 EP was also included. In January of 2012, Alcest released their third full-length, Les Voyages de l'Âme.

The band moved further afield and left metal behind on their fourth full-length. Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Stéphane "Neige" Paut and drummer Jean "Winterhalter" Deflandre enlisted producer Birgir Jón Birgisson (Sigur Rós), the string quartet from Icelandic band Amiina, and guest vocals from Slowdive's Neil Halstead. The album Shelter was issued in early 2014.

After an international tour, Alcest returned to the recording studio late in 2015. Their fifth studio album, Kodama, was conceptually inspired by the animated film Princess Mononoke; it marked a stylistic return to metal and offered a hint of the musical terrain explored on 2010's Écailles de Lune. Kodama was issued by Prophecy Productions in the fall of 2016.

"Take Me Back to London" is a song by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran featuring British rapper Stormzy for Sheeran's fourth studio album No.6 Collaborations Project (2019). It was written by Sheeran, Shellback, Karl Sandberg, Frederik Gibson and Michael Omari Jr., with production from Skrillex, Kenny Beats and Fred.

Sheeran and Stormzy previously performed together at the 2017 Brit Awards. "Take Me Back to London" was announced as part of the tracklist for No.6 Collaborations Project (2019). A while after the song's release, two men from Black Country sang a cover of it which went viral.

"Take Me Back to London" is a grime song. According to HotNewHipHop's Aron A., Sheeran "shows off his bars on the record while swapping verses with Stormzy". The song sees Sheeran "brag" about the gross of his ÷ Tour.

Costadinos Contostavlos (born 11 June 1987), better known by his stage name Dappy, is an English rapper. He is the lead singer of the Camden-based grime trio N-Dubz, with his cousin Tulisa, and Fazer. He was known for his slightly unusual dress sense and his love for what he describes as "eye-catching headwear". His trademark was wearing a selection of woolly chullos (sometimes referred to as "Dappy hats"), turning up one or both of the ear-flaps of the hat.

The popular Finnish prog and power metal quartet Sonata Arctica specialize in a soaring, orchestral variation on European heavy metal that melds sweeping, melodic compositions and meaty riffs, lush, expansive production, clean vocals, and sophisticated instrumental chops. Once a hard rock band called Tricky Beans (later Tricky Means), they changed their name for good when they adopted power metal as a genre. Nigeria's Mr. Eazi is a Ghanaian-based performer known for his R&B-influenced Afro-beat sound. Born Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Mr. Eazi grew up in Lagos. After high school, he relocated to Kumasi, Ghana, where he studied mechanical engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Basing himself there, he launched his musical career in 2012 with the single "Pipi Dance." A year later, he collaborated with U.K.-based DJ Juls on the track "Bankulize" (featuring Pappy Kojo). The single caught on and more high-profile recordings followed, including 2015's "Skin Tight" (featuring Efya), which also performed well, garnering thousands of views online. From there, he collaborated on tracks with Sarkodie, Lil Kesh, Burna Boy, and others. Despite his success, Mr. Eazi was denied participation in the 2016 Ghana Music Awards because he was not a Ghanaian citizen. Nonetheless, that same year he signed with the Starboy Worldwide record label. In 2017, he released the mixtape Life Is Eazi, Vol. 1: Accra to Lagos, which featured guest appearances by Big Lean, Tekno, Phyno, DJ Cuppy, and others. Included on the album were the singles "Leg Over" and "Tilapia." The album debuted at number four on the Billboard World Albums chart. A string of singles appeared over the next year, including the hit "Decline" with British R&B singer RAYE and the Lotto Boyzz and M.O. collaboration "Bad Vibe."

Quintessential Los Angeles band Redd Kross exist at the sweet spot where punk, metal, and bubblegum meet and since they began in the late '70s, the band's driving forces, Jeff and Steven McDonald, have stayed true to that equation. There was more punk at the start, like on Born Innocent, the 1981 album they made before they were finished with high school, but the band's love of cheesy '70s pop culture and sugar-smacked hooks led to them aiming in a different, more accessible direction. Playing with a variety of musicians, the band made detours into pop metal on 1987's Neurotica, slick power pop on 1990's Third Eye, tuneful post-grunge on 1997's Show World, and in a stunning comeback of sorts after years spent working on other projects and the occasional reunion, their best work to date on 2016's raw and exciting Researching the Blues.

Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas (born October 13, 1980) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress. She was first discovered as a teenager and later signed to Murder Inc. in 2002. That year, she was featured on Fat Joe's "What’s Luv?" and Ja Rule's "Always on Time", both of which became two of the biggest hit songs of 2002; Ashanti became the first female artist to occupy the top two positions on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart simultaneously when "Foolish" and "What's Luv?" were at numbers one and two, respectively.

Pentatonix (abbreviated PTX) is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee. Characterized by their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, basslines, riffing, percussion, and beatboxing, they produce cover versions of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, along with original material. Pentatonix formed in 2011 and subsequently won the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off, receiving $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music. When Sony's Epic Records dropped the group after The Sing-Off, the group formed its YouTube channel, distributing its music through Madison Gate Records, a label owned by Sony Pictures. Their YouTube channel currently has over 16 million subscribers and 3.7 billion views. The group's video tribute to Daft Punk had received over 300 million views as of January 2019.

Originally formed in 2001 with the intention of playing just one show, Germany's Equilibrium quickly changed their minds and, over time, joined scores of new millennium heavy metal bands (Windir, Turisas, Negura Bunget, Eluveitie, etc.) devoted to penning songs steeped in the cultural traditions, legends, and folklore of their homeland. In Equilibrium's case, this happens to be the historically significant state of Bavaria -- home to the Black Forest, the Brothers Grimm, Oktoberfest...in short, almost limitless regional material with which to populate the group's symphonic brand of pagan-folk-black metal. This creative process began in earnest in 2003 via Equilibrium's first demo tape, and steadily gained momentum with a series of impressive club and festival performances, ultimately resulting in the release of 2005's debut album, Turis Fratyr, featuring the lineup of vocalist Helge Stang, guitarists René Berthiaume and Andreas Völkl, bassist Sandra Völkl, drummer Julius Koblitzek, and guest keyboard player Armin Dörfler. Three years later, Equilibrium were back with their sophomore adventure, Sagas, which kicked off a new relationship with Nuclear Blast Records, introduced new drummer Manuel DiCamillo, and carried on bringing traditional Bavarian elements into the world of extreme metal.

Jinjer is a Ukrainian metalcore band formed in 2009. Their playing style incorporates elements of death metal, progressive rock and nu metal. While explaining their influences, the band has noted other metal acts like Opeth, Karnivool and Textures, in addition to groups across the spectrum of R&B, soul and hip-hop such as Cypress Hill. Since their inception, the band has released three full-length albums and three extended plays.
