"Spirit in the Night" is a song written and originally recorded by American singer/songwriter Bruce Springsteen for his debut album Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. (1973). It was also the second single released from the album. A cover version titled Spirits in the Night (spirit being plural), performed by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, was released on the album Nightingales and Bombers and as a Top 40 single.

The original version of "Spirit in the Night" was released on Bruce Springsteen's debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. It was one of the last songs to be written and recorded for the release. Springsteen had recorded 10 other tracks for the album, but Clive Davis, president of the record label that was releasing the album, was concerned that the recorded tracks did not have enough commercial appeal. As a result, Springsteen quickly wrote and recorded two additional songs: "Spirit in the Night" and "Blinded by the Light". Because these songs were added so late in the recording process, several of Springsteen's band members were unavailable to record these two songs. As a result, the recording lineup for "Spirit in the Night" was limited to Vini Lopez on drums, Clarence Clemons on saxophone, and Springsteen himself playing all other instruments. Although "Spirit in the Night" was one of the last songs written for the album, it did grow out of an earlier version of the song that Springsteen had played live prior to receiving his recording contract.

Formed in 1993, Swedish hardcore punkers Raised Fist shape an aggressive yet inviting sound when honing their old-school-influenced punk roots with a metal edge. Taking their name from a Rage Against the Machine lyric, Alexander "Alle" Rajkovic (vocals), Andreas "Josse" Johansson (bass), Marco Eronen (guitar), and Oskar Karlsson (drums) were praised early on by European critics. Early independent releases such as the 1994 You're Not Like Me and 1996's Stronger Than Ever EPs, along with their 1998 well-received debut, Fuel, further marked Raised Fist's pinch-hitting approach and molded them overseas. Ignoring the Guidelines marked the band's proper major-label debut, issued in 2000 on Burning Heart. The following tour was a massive success, and the band -- adding second guitarist Daniel Holmberg along the way -- returned to the studio the next year to pump out Dedication for their growing base of rabid fans. The record arrived on Epitaph in the fall of 2002, a year after a collection of early material showed up with Watch Your Step. Spring 2006 found Raised Fist dropping their fourth studio album, Sound of the Republic; it was a ferocious record of hardcore and metal produced by Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Meshuggah) that featured new drummer Matte Modin (ex-Dark Funeral). Both headlining dates and ones with Comeback Kid were played throughout the summer around Europe. They returned in 2009 with Veil of Ignorance. In 2013 the band signed a two-album deal with Epitaph Records, delivering the first of the two albums, From the North, in early 2015.

Based out of the industrial Tyneside region of Northern England, esoteric singer/songwriter Richard Dawson's shambolic, guitar-driven folk music has drawn comparisons to other singular artists like Jandek, Mike Waterson, John Martyn, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Adem, Skip Spence, and King Creosote. Specializing in a heady blend of traditional English folk music, Sacred Harp-kissed North Country blues, and jazzy psych-folk, Dawson issued his first recording, Richard Dawson Sings Songs and Plays Guitar, in 2007 before bursting out of the Newcastle experimental scene in 2012 with the critically acclaimed The Magic Bridge. Released in 2013, The Glass Trunk found Dawson offering up a largely a cappella set of six songs inspired by a month spent sifting through the tattered documents of his local Tyne and Wear history museum, and 2014's Nothing Important was his first outing for Weird World Records. Dawson released his second album for Weird World in 2017; Peasant was inspired by tales of life in the Middle Ages, and based on Dawson's research on the history of North East England.

Australian rapper Illy defied the "haters" to make resolutely commercial, pop-influenced hip-hop that eventually snagged him a major-label deal and a number one album. Born Alasdair Murray on September 6, 1986 and brought up in the beachfront Melbourne suburb of Frankston, Illy was a teenage tearaway who barely scraped through school. He got his start in hip-hop at just 13 with the local Crooked Eye Crew, with whom he released his first "mixtape" CD. Illy held down a succession of low-paying jobs before deciding to finally knuckle down -- he applied to law school and emerged some years later with a degree. Eventually, the Crooked Eye Crew split up after each of its members became too busy with their own projects, and Illy decided to pursue a solo career. He signed to the Obese label and released his debut solo album, Long Story Short, in 2009. From the outset, his music was based on strong melodic hooks and his louche, laid-back, sing-speak flow. The album hit the urban chart but did not bother the pop chart. However, he built exposure by embarking on a nationwide tour, and his sophomore effort, The Chase, released the following year, did much better, going to number 25 on the main chart.

2012's Bring It Back was his breakthrough album, going to number 15 upon release and winning him an ARIA Award (the Australian Grammys) for best urban album. Following its release, he left Obese to set up his own label, OneTwo, and signed a licensing deal with Warner Music for the release of his fourth album, 2013's Cinematic. The album was largely produced by his former Crooked Eye crewmate M-Phazes, who had since become a big name in his own right, contributing beats to the likes of Eminem. It was more "pop" than ever before, as Illy broadened his songwriting palette, and featured collaborations with numerous guest vocalists including the Hilltop Hoods, Drapht, Daniel Merriweather, and Scarlett Stevens. The album hit number five on the chart and went gold. Illy's streak of success continued with his 2016 album Two Degrees. His most pop-oriented to date, it gave him his biggest hit yet, going to number one and producing the number two single "Papercuts," featuring Vera Blue. Produced once again by M-Phazes, it also featured Rudimental's Anne-Marie on the track "Catch 22" and was nominated for no fewer than six ARIA awards.

A rough-and-ready, emotionally charged punk-pop unit based out of the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia's Grayscale's fiery blend of raw punk and hook-laden alt rock invokes names like the Dangerous Summer, Neck Deep, Seaway, and All Time Low. Founded in 2011 around the talents of (then) high school students vocalist Collin Walsh, lead guitarist Andrew Kyne, rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist Dallas Molster, bassist Nick Ventimiglia, and drummer Nick Veno, the group released their debut EP, Change, independently in 2015. Two years later they inked a deal with Fearless Records and issued their debut full-length outing, the Kyle Black-produced Adornment.

On March 17, 2019, Grayscale announced via their Twitter account that they had parted ways with drummer Nick Veno, citing "creative differences." Veno later released a statement on his own account providing his view of the situation, which differed from the band's previous statement. The band clarified that Veno would finish out playing the band's remaining tour dates with them and that more details on his departure would be released the following day. It turned out to later be a prank toward the release of a new music video for the song "If I Ever See You Again" and that Veno would not be leaving the band.

German electronic duo BUNT. deliver party-friendly dance jams that honor the spirit of the late Avicii and channel the early material of funky forebears Justice, Basement Jaxx, and Calvin Harris. Debuting in the mid-2010s, they expanded their Avicii-esque folk-house sound by incorporating horns and world music flourishes, signing with the majors in 2019.

Hailing from Stuttgart, BUNT. is Levi Wijk and Nico Crispin, high school friends who teamed up at the age of 16 to craft dance anthems inspired by Swedish House Mafia. Taking SHM's propulsive festival house approach and enriching it with folksy elements like banjos and harmonicas, they adopted a style strikingly similar to Avicii's on early tracks such as 2014's "Journey" and "Harmonica." Subsequent 2016 output "Old Guitar" and "Coming Home" sounded like Of Monsters and Men or Mumford & Sons spun with an EDM twist, while "Young Hearts" was infused with saxophone. By 2018, Celtic world music tones found their way into "On My Way" and "Little Secrets."

With nearly a dozen tracks building a wide audience by the end of the decade, the pair signed with Geffen and made their label debut with 2019's "Oh My Other." Teaming with blues band the Dip, they followed with the earthy "Sure Don't Miss You." Borrowing Buena Vista Social Club's Omara Portuondo's "Tiene Sabor," they added Latin flair to their repertoire with that summer's "Cuba (Tiene Sabor)."
