Singer/songwriter Owen Ashworth performs poignant, lushly arranged indie pop songs as Advance Base. Previously known for his beloved indie electronic outfit Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, which released several albums and toured constantly between 1997 and 2010, he retired the project and started fresh, establishing Advance Base in 2011. Featuring an organic-sounding mix of acoustic instrumentation and minimal electronics, albums such as 2015's Nephew in the Wild and 2018's Animal Companionship showcased Ashworth's understated singing style and affecting lyrics.

Rapper Blac Youngsta went nationwide during the late 2010s with a major-label deal and a pair of subsequent charting full-length projects, 223 and F*ck Everybody 2 (both 2018), that alternated between hard tracks for the streets and comparatively lighter jams for parties. Prior to his commercial breakthrough, the rapper born Sam Benson was known in his native South Memphis as an emergent artist and as the organizer of the popular McMillan Street block party. Youngsta began hosting the parties in 2011 to honor murdered neighborhood youth King Craddy. As a recording artist, Youngsta got his start with mixtapes, including the Fast Brick series, started in 2012. Yo Gotti signed Youngsta in 2015 to Collective Music Group, the outlet for mixtapes such as I Swear to God, Young & Reckless, and F*ck Everybody, all issued by the end of 2016. Youngsta then moved up to major-label Epic in 2017, and the following year released the full-lengths 223 and F*ck Everybody 2, both of which registered within the upper half of the Billboard 200. "Booty," a single taken from the former, peaked at number 35 on the R&B/hip-hop chart and crossed into the Hot 100. Its remix featured Chris Brown, Jeezy, and Trey Songz. Youngsta returned in 2019 with the three-song Cut Up EP.

A native of the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City, rapper Don Q emerged in 2016 delivering hard, no-nonsense verses about his life experiences on his debut mixtape, Don Season. Initially known for his collaborations with fellow Bronx native A Boogie wit da Hoodie, he became part of the Highbridge the Label crew and later signed with Atlantic. His style eschews melodic hooks and flashy delivery, instead focusing on intense, motivated lyricism.

Don Q grew up listening to Jay-Z albums and mixtapes by the likes of Lloyd Banks and Cassidy, and started writing rhymes and battle rapping as a teenager. He released a low-key mixtape at the age of 17, but subsequently lost his focus on music until 2014, when he decided to get back on track and rap professionally. He made cameos on tracks by Meek Mill and Dave East before releasing his Don Season mixtape in 2016, as well as Highbridge the Label: The Takeover, Vol. 1, a collaboration with A Boogie.

The following year he dropped Corner Stories, a mixtape that boasted appearances by Styles P, Jadakiss, and Fabolous, as well as production by Scott Storch and Murda Beatz. Soon after its release, Don Q signed to Atlantic, which issued Corner Stories Reloaded, a revamped, expanded edition of the mixtape. In 2018 he issued the Don Talk EP, featuring guests like Desiigner, Pusha T, and Tee Grizzley, following it up with Don Season 2, a sequel to his 2016 mixtape of the same name.

"Thunder Road" is a song written and performed by Bruce Springsteen, and is the opening track on his 1975 breakthrough album Born to Run. It is ranked as one of Springsteen's greatest songs, and often appears on lists of the top rock songs of all time. Rolling Stone magazine placed it as No. 86 on its "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

Started out as a 1972 song called "Angelina", then after further development, Springsteen did a solo recording in October 1974 at 914 Sound Studios, Blauvelt, New York, of "Chrissie's Song", including the line, "leave what you've lost, leave what's grown cold, Thunder Road". Sometime between November 1974 and January 1975, Springsteen took "Chrissie's Song" and lyrics from another composition, "Walking in the Street", and combined them into a song he now called "Wings for Wheels", which he recorded in February. He took the line, "they case the promised land" and verse, "Oh baby I can't lay the stars at your feet, but I think we could take it all, just you and me, Oh come on and see there's a lot of room, For you baby in this front seat" from "Walking in the Street". On February 5, 1975 at the Main Point, Bryn Mawr, Pensylvania, with the featured girl now called "Angelina", Philadelphia Disk Jockey Ed Sciaky introduced the radio broadcast that included "Born to Run", "She's the One", "Jungleland", and "Wings for Wheels". A memorable moment, not preserved for album No. 3, was Suki Lahav's violin behind Bruce: "Now the season's over and I feel it getting cold, Well, I wish I could take you to some sandy beach, where we'd never grow old, ah, but baby, you know that's just jive, tonight's bustin' open and I'm alive, Oh, do what you can do to make me feel like a man". But "Wings" had a horrible jazzy ending, and sometime after March 9, 1975 (the last time "Wings" appeared on a set list), Bruce took the music (the main coda) he had written for "Walking In the Street", and patched it on to the end of "Wings for Wheels"; now his new lyric "this is a town for losers, I'm pulling out of here to win" was followed by the new instrumental outro, or the "instrumental coda", or "Walking in the Street". "The night's bustin' open, these two lanes will take us anywhere", and a poster for a 1958 Robert Mitchum film in a movie Theater lobby. They provided the final ingredients for his new song, "Thunder Road". The exact story behind moving "Walking in the Street" to "Wings for Wheels" is not known, but magic suddenly came to "Thunder Road". According to the 2005 documentary, Wings for Wheels the Making of Born to Run, Landau says he helped restructure some songs. Springsteen claims to have lost the completed tape of "Walking in the Street", recorded May 28, 1975, which is also why it could not go on "Tracks".

"There were two outtakes from Born to Run: 'Linda Let Me Be the One' is one track, and there was another one called 'Walking in the Street' which I would have liked to have put on, but I couldn't find the master. We searched and searched. It might have been simply recorded over, because in those days, if something wasn't going to make it, you're going to need that tape so you recorded something else over the top." - B. Springsteen, MOJO Magazine interview 1999.

April 13, 1975 was the day Jon Landau officially joined the third album's production team. Louis Lahav, chief engineer, and his wife Suki, the violin player, quit and returned to their native Israel at the end of February (this is often misreported as months later, which is incorrect, and the story that she and Bruce were in love, and that the Lahavs left to save their marriage, has nothing to do with "Thunder Road"). Jimmy Iovine reported to work at the Record Plant on April 18, after Landau was instructed to find better accommodations.

During Springsteen's writing of the lyrics to "Thunder Road", instead of "skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets", he had written, "skeletons found by exhumed shallow graves". Max Weinberg convinced Springsteen to move away from the darker lyrics and stay consistent with the blue collar spirit of the album.

Rhiannon Giddens - "NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" [Blues & Jazz, Live In Concert]

NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

"NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" music video by Rhiannon Giddens
Added: 23-09-2019
Genre : Blues & Jazz, Live In Concert
Description : Rhiannon Giddens: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Sept. 16, 2019 | Bob Boilen -- There is an intensity to Rhiannon Giddens I could feel from the moment she arrived at the Tiny Desk, and her songs reflect that spirit. "Ten Thousand Voices," the first song in the set, was inspired by Rhiannon reading about the sub-Saharan slave trade. The follow-up piece was inspired by the American slave trade and a New England newspaper ad in the late 1700s of a young woman "for sale" and her 9-month old baby who was "at the purchaser's option." Rhiannon Giddens' thoughts of this young woman and how her life and her child were not under her control prompted the song "At the Purchaser's Option."

Despite its weightiness, Rhiannon Giddens' music is entertaining, and her voice, the melodies, and her accompaniment are engaging. But it is music infused with lessons and deep purpose — something all too rare in popular music in my opinion.

Three of the songs performed at the Tiny Desk are from her recent release, There Is No Other, recorded with her musical partner Francesco Turrisi. Francesco plays banjo, piano and frame drum here and is joined by Jason Sypher on upright bass. Rhiannon picks up a replica of an 1858 banjo for "I'm On My Way," which she says helps her access her ancestors. "So much beauty and so much horribleness wrapped up together seems to be our story," she says.

For her closing number, she focuses on the beauty. "You can call it whatever you want, 'gravity,' 'God,' whatever. There's a force that I believe in, and that's what I focus on." And with that the band takes us out on the beautiful gospel tune, "He Will See You Through."

“Everyone has another side to themselves which is expressed in different ways,” says Helen Ganya Brown, aka Dog In The Snow. “I think I’m quite shy in real life, which contrasts with my songwriting.”

Brown’s album debut for Bella Union is Vanishing Lands, an imposing, haunting and luminous collection of songs in the darker spaces between dream-pop, art-rock and electronica, lifted by euphoric melodies, ravishing vocals and absorbing lyrics.

The album was initially created at Brown’s home in Brighton before co-producer Rob Flynn helped her add shifting, impressionistic swathes of colour, from the ominous chords that open ‘Light’ to the vocal eddies that close ‘Dark’.

Brown wrote eight of the ten songs in a three-week spell after a period of “strange dreams”. She recalls: “Dreams in black and white. I found myself in a dreamland and discovered it was being destroyed. I chose Vanishing Lands as an album title because it sounded suitably desolate, and lent the songs a feeling of cohesion.”

The themes of the two oldest tracks suit the ‘ruined world’ scenario. ‘Icaria’ is named after a utopian society established in the 1840s by a French socialist which only survived for 50 years. ‘Gold’ refers to America’s gold rush bonanza of the same era, when people searched for a better life, but instead created and faced catastrophe.

In the same vein as Brown’s 2017 debut album Consume Me, the lyrics to Vanishing Lands repeat certain words (such as ‘obscura’, ‘gold’ and ‘empire’), which also provides cohesion. In this age of streaming and playlists, “Perhaps someone will listen to the album from start to finish.”

Born to a Thai mother and Scottish father, Brown was raised in Singapore from the age of five to eighteen, when she returned to the UK, making her home in Brighton. Learning guitar and subsequently Garageband software to construct broader sounds and styles of songwriting, she absorbed influences such as Sufjan Stevens, Scott Walker, David Lynch, Clint Mansell and Brian Eno: brooding, immersive, filmic universes through which Brown could escape her shy nature. But she has since stepped out, both as a commanding solo performer and one of the singers and musicians in the touring version of Lost Horizons, the collective co-founded by Simon Raymonde, Bella Union’s label boss (who first fell for Dog in The Snow when Brown sent tracks to his show on Amazing Radio).

Brown also cites key literary and visual influences. Film director Ingmar Bergman’s B&W masterpiece The Seventh Seal and David Lynch’s B&W lithographs impacted on Vanishing Lands’ desolate aesthetic and album artwork. Less overt this time are Singapore and Brown’s “fragmented sense of identity, being mixed race,” that underpinned Consume Me. But they remain, in Vanishing Lands’ subconscious, as the (arguable) utopia that remains pristine compared to the visions that haunt Brown. The name Dog In The Snow comes from Frank Kafka’s iconic and prescient novel The Trial: “It seemed to represent finding liberation in an oppressed situation,” she explains. “I was trying to think of something with limitless creative space that doesn’t feel hindered in any way.”

The plight of the individual battered by the political system is echoed by the hooded black figures in the video that Brown has made for the fragile album highlight ‘Roses’. Her inspiration was a photo of refugees at sea, their faces hidden, desperate to escape their ruined homeland. But would their destination, if reached, provide comfort or more ruin? “It doesn’t help when people aren’t welcoming,” Brown says. “That was my mother’s experience when she arrived from Thailand.”

The album’s core theme also covers environmental ruination. ‘Fall Empire’ opens and closes with a warning: “If we did dig precious things from the land, we will invite disaster”, which Brown heard on the groundbreaking 1982 documentary Koyaanisqatsi. Given the path that humanity is currently taking, no wonder Brown’s dreams seem to prophesise the end of times.

Still, she feels Vanishing Lands’ finale ‘Dark’ is “the most optimistic song on the album. Like I’m waking up from this dreamland and finding freedom rather than it being a negative feeling. Because things do change. We have to hope things will get better.”
