With an imposing figure and booming voice to match, Slim Thug (born Stayve Jerome Thomas) began his rise by dropping in for guest verses -- on mixtapes and other artists' albums -- for several years before making his full-length debut through the Neptunes' Star Trak label. Based out of the northern part of Houston, the MC fell in with Swishahouse's Michael Watts and established a following in no time. This strategy had a lot to do with his business instincts: mixtapes released on his own Boss Hogg Outlawz label circulated throughout the region. (He also acquired a couple record stores and became involved with real estate.) Already Platinum, distributed by Geffen, sustained several release-date delays before its July 2005 street date, and featured production work from the Neptunes and Jazze Pha. The Boss of All Bosses followed in 2009, with Tha Thug Show arriving one year later.

In 2012, Slim Thug kicked off his Thug Thursday mixtape series (the sequel dropped in 2014, with a third part of the trilogy arriving in 2016). He also released the Welcome to Texas series: 2013's installment featured Rick Ross, Pimp C, and Ludacris. That same year, Thug issued a joint album with Lil' Keke titled The Big Unit, as well as his fourth LP, Boss Life, which featured Big K.R.I.T., Paul Wall, Chamillionaire, Bun B, Yo Gotti, and Kevin Gates.

Thug would have another busy year in 2015. Launching his Hogg Life series, he unveiled the first part, The Beginning, that February. Still Surviving followed that summer, with Hustler of the Year arriving in October. A year later, the fourth volume, American King, debuted in the Top Ten of the Billboard rap chart. Thug had a banner year in 2017, with the February release of his Welcome 2 Houston mixtape followed in August by Havin Thangs 2K17, a collaborative album with Killa Kyleon. The World Is Yours, his third major release of the year, arrived in December and featured guests like Cam Wallace and Paul Wall. In 2019, Thug paired with Boston George for the mixtape Big Bad Boston and the Boss.

On the musical programme:
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy - Symphony No. 5 in D major/D minor, Op. 107, "The Reformation"

The musicians:
The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra
Jan Willem de Vriend [conductor]

Recording: Friday the 20th of December 2019, live in TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

The Symphony No. 5 in D major/D minor, Op. 107, known as the Reformation, was composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1830 in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Presentation of the Augsburg Confession. The Confession is a key document of Lutheranism and its Presentation to Emperor Charles V in June 1530 was a momentous event of the Protestant Reformation. This symphony was written for a full orchestra and was Mendelssohn's second extended symphony. It was not published until 1868, 21 years after the composer's death – hence its numbering as '5'. Although the symphony is not very frequently performed, it is better known today than when it was originally published. Mendelssohn's sister, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, chose the name Reformation Symphony.

American rapper BlocBoy JB emerged in 2017 with a pair of viral hits that highlighted his speedy rhymes and big bass production from longtime producer Tay Keith. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, JB flirted with gang-related criminal activity before quickly immersing himself in his music. After releasing a series of well-received mixtapes, he caught the attention of Canadian rapper Drake, who collaborated with him on the viral single "Look Alive." The track reached the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100, and helped solidify JB's fan base.

Born James Baker in Memphis, Tennessee, JB grew up in a large, single-parent household and would sneak his brother's equipment away to record his own music. The self-taught producer and dancer released his first song, "Goons Coming," when he was just a teenager. In 2017, he issued "No Chorus, Pt. 6" and "Shoot," the latter of which took off and caught the ears of high-profile rappers like Drake. Produced by Keith, the track was featured on his Who Am I 3 mixtape, and was recorded in the rapper's closet. As his online audience grew, he issued additional mixtapes like The Purple M&M. In early 2018, he scored a major co-sign when Drake joined him on the track "Look Alive." Included on JB's Simi mixtape, the track amassed millions of streams within a month of its release. It also became JB's Billboard chart debut, landing at number six on the Hot 100. He returned to the studio in 2019 and issued the bouncy single "Mercedes."

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (3 February 1809 – 4 November 1847), born and widely known as Felix Mendelssohn, was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music and chamber music. His best-known works include his overture and incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, the oratorio Elijah, the overture The Hebrides, his mature Violin Concerto, and his String Octet. The melody for the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is also his. Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words are his most famous solo piano compositions.

A grandson of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, Felix Mendelssohn was born into a prominent Jewish family. He was brought up without religion until the age of seven, when he was baptised as a Reformed Christian. Felix was recognised early as a musical prodigy, but his parents were cautious and did not seek to capitalise on his talent.

Mendelssohn enjoyed early success in Germany, and revived interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, notably with his performance of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. He became well received in his travels throughout Europe as a composer, conductor and soloist; his ten visits to Britain – during which many of his major works were premiered – form an important part of his adult career. His essentially conservative musical tastes set him apart from more adventurous musical contemporaries such as Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, Charles-Valentin Alkan and Hector Berlioz. The Leipzig Conservatory, which he founded, became a bastion of this anti-radical outlook. After a long period of relative denigration due to changing musical tastes and antisemitism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, his creative originality has been re-evaluated. He is now among the most popular composers of the Romantic era.

A reggae outfit combining elements of dancehall, dub, and ska with the sounds of hip-hop vocalized in French and Arabic, Dub Inc. formed in 1997. The group -- hailing from Saint Etienne -- released its first album, Dub Incorporation, in 2000. The album went over well enough to warrant a re-release a year later, in an expanded edition subtitled Version 1.2. The group's next two full-lengths -- Diversite and Dans le Decor -- were released in 2003 and 2005, respectively. In late 2006, Dub Incorporation got around to releasing a live document of their well-known and well-loved live presentation, and finally issued album number four, Afrikya, in 2008. Hors Contrôle followed in 2010, and Paradise in 2013.

Tyler Dow Bryant (born February 24, 1991) is an American rock musician from Honey Grove, Texas, United States.

When Tyler entered high school, he started listening to rock and roll music, such as The Black Crowes, The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. This music started influencing the songs that he was writing and playing. Tyler moved to Nashville at age 17 to write songs, and in the process he met drummer Caleb Crosby and bass player Calvin Webster. Caleb and Calvin joined Tyler's band, named "Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown", which now also includes bass guitarist Noah Denney and guitarist Graham Whitford (the latter being the son of Aerosmith's Brad Whitford).

Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown released their debut album Wild Child on January 22, 2013. Their song "Loaded Dice & Buried Money" was available for streaming on October 13, 2015, and an EP titled The Wayside was announced with a release date of November 13, 2015.

Norwegian "black 'n' roll" sextet Kvelertak ("Chokehold") was formed in 2007 in Stavanger, Norway's third city and home to several popular gothic metal bands. Kvelertak's sound could not have been more different, however. Fusing the raw punk 'n' roll sound pioneered by the likes of Turbonegro with the harsh, shrieking fury of black metal was not a new idea -- it had already been done with great success by fellow Norwegians Satyricon -- but this was arguably the first time it had been attempted by a band of "regular guys" not already grounded in the black metal idiom. An early demo, Westcoast Holocaust, and steady touring earned them a devoted fan base, and in 2010 they released their eponymous debut album.

Recorded by Converge's Kurt Ballou and released by Oslo's Indie Recordings (and later by the End in the US), Kvelertak was a surprise global hit, with its lyrics all in Norwegian. Critics praised the band's sledgehammer sound and the freshness in their mash-up of genres, and the album went gold, giving the band two Spellemann Awards (the Norwegian Grammys) and leading to a deal with Sony Music in Scandinavia and massive metal factory Roadrunner in the rest of the world, opening them up to a global audience. Their second album, Meir ("More"), was released in 2013 and was another critical and commercial hit, despite some controversy over its cover art -- by influential American artist John Dyer Baizley (of the band Baroness) -- of a naked mother-goddess figure spattered with bird droppings. Early 2016 saw the release of a pair of singles, "1985" and "Berserkr," with the band's much anticipated third studio long player, Nattesferd, dropping later that May

The Key is the eighth studio album by the British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading, released on 28 February 1983 by A&M Records. The album was recorded at Townhouse Studios in Shepherd's Bush, London; Polar Studios in Stockholm and also in New York.

The album spawned the single "Drop the Pilot", which became one of Armatrading's biggest hits, reaching number 11 in the UK Singles Chart over a 10-week stay. It also quickly became a staple of Armatrading's live performances and has featured on many of her compilation albums. Armatrading and her backing band also performed the song on Top of the Pops in early 1983.

Description : Balún: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Dec. 20, 2019 | Felix Contreras -- It's impossible to not be drawn in by the visual specter of Balún. The band has refined their electronic roots with their turn toward self-discovery on beautifully crafted studio albums, and this set behind the Tiny Desk shows how expertly they deliver the same meticulous, artful music live.

Their mix of traditional instruments with electronics creates not just a sonic treat but also a visual feast, as our eyes dart from one instrument to the other, drawn in by a Puerto Rican cuatro and a makeshift drum set.

But I didn't expect to be greeted by a mysterious, eighth member who made an appearance at the start of "El Espanto" in the form of programmed solenoids that struck the bottoms of pots and pans to create a rhythmic intro to one of their brilliantly crafted songs, mixing the folkloric with the modern.

Balún is part of a vanguard of bands that is expanding the musical landscape of Puerto Rico and it is a treat to watch them up close as they create an actual bridge between the ancient and the modern, set against a rich tapestry of vocals that extoll the virtues and challenges facing their beloved island these days.

Much like an island in the ocean, this performance is just the tip of the magic this band offers. Hopefully you'll be pulled into their visual and musical attractions as much as they have for me.
