Though Waxahatchee transformed from brittle, self-recorded solo material to more raucous, full-band indie rock over the course of the 2010s, it remained intensely personal in nature. Singer/songwriter Andy Shauf's dark, rustic tales of the Canadian prairie blend folk with sophisticated pop, reflecting his upbringing in Regina, Saskatchewan. He became interested in music as a teenager, teaching himself guitar, drums, piano, and any other instruments he came across. The songs he wrote and recorded in his parents' basement eventually culminated in a collection of demos called Darker Days, which he self-released in 2009. Citing influences like Wilco, Elliott Smith, and Neil Young, Shauf's hushed, lyrical songs have a keen focus on arrangement. He spent the following two years painstakingly recording his first proper album, Bearer of Bad News, which he released in late 2012. The album was critically well-received and over the coming two years he expanded his touring range throughout North America, eventually heading to Europe as well. In January 2015, Bearer of Bad News was re-released by the Portland, Oregon-based label Tender Loving Empire. His follow-up was constructed in a similarly intricate manner, with the initial 2014 full-band sessions later being scrapped in favor of Shauf's preferred method of recording and arranging each instrument himself. The result was 2016's The Party, another literate, detailed pop gem that saw a U.S. release via the ANTI- label, with Arts & Crafts handling the record in Canada.

Contemporary R&B artist Arin Ray competed on the U.S. version of The X Factor and quickly moved into behind-the-scenes work as a songwriter prior to landing a major-label deal. During the first season of The X Factor in 2011, the Cincinnati native was eliminated as a member of the bootcamp-stage group Intensity. He returned in 2012 for the second season, mentored by Britney Spears, and finished tenth. Ray self-released a single, "Turn It Up," in 2013, but within a couple years had co-written songs for Jason Derulo ("Love Like That") and Chris Brown ("KAE"). Ray resumed solo work with the Phases EP in 2016, the same year he was credited with co-writing songs for the likes of K. Michelle (the charting single "Ain't You"), Ro James ("Ride"), DJ Mustard ("Another Summer"), and Jahkoy ("Don't Stop the Vibe").

In 2018, Ray made his major-label debut with Platinum Fire on Interscope. The album featured collaborations with Terrace Martin, Nez & Rio, and Childish Major, among others. Included was the single "We Ain't Homies." A deluxe version of Platinum Fire followed later that year and added three more songs including "Always" featuring Babyface.

A native of Loganville, Georgia, singer/songwriter Jon Langston began playing guitar in his early teens, gravitating toward football in his college years. After some injuries left him sidelined, he rekindled his interest in country music and began writing songs that he played for friends, and posted on YouTube. Encouraged by his music's reception, he contacted producer Josh Manuel and headed to Atlanta to record his first EP, Young & Reckless, which he self-released in 2013. Citing both country and rock influences from George Strait to Staind, Langston's first few songs fared well on the iTunes country charts and he soon found himself opening shows for bro-country artist Chase Rice. He followed up with a second EP in late 2013, which featured the feel-good single "Runnin' on Sunshine," co-written by fellow Georgian and former Voice contestant Jordan Rager. Following his ambitions, Langston moved to Nashville, releasing the single "Party Boots" in 2014, followed by his third EP, Showtime. Released in May 2015, Showtime would prove to be Langston's first breakout reaching number 26 on Billboard's Top Country Album's chart. Wasting no time, he followed up that December with a self-titled EP faring equally well on the charts. Displaying his range, Langston next appeared on a 2016 track by Atlanta-based metalcore band Issues. A pair of chart-topping singles, "Prob'ly at a Bar" and "When It Comes to Loving You" followed in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Lennon Stella's path to a career in music has featured enough unexpected twists and turns to seem like the plot of a TV drama -- which in her case is certainly appropriate. Lennon and her younger sister Maisy were the daughters of a Canadian country music duo, and thanks to their parents' appearance on a televised talent competition, they were cast on the popular television series Nashville, playing the daughters of a well-known country music star. After several seasons of playing a talented young vocalist, reality started to mirror fiction as Lennon began writing songs for the show, and in 2018 she stepped out as a solo artist and songwriter with the song "Like Everybody Else."

"Blinding Lights" is a song by Canadian singer The Weeknd that serves as the second single of his upcoming fourth studio album. It was released on November 29, 2019, two days after the release of "Heartless". The Weeknd wrote and produced the song with its producers Max Martin and Oscar Holter, with Belly and Jason Quenneville receiving additional writing credits. The song reached number one in Germany, Israel, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden in 2020.

IIts official music video was shot in Fremont Street, Las Vegas and was released on January 21, 2020. The visual follows the events of the music video for "Heartless" and sees The Weeknd go on a hallucinated joyride through Las Vegas after waking from a trance. It concludes with Tesfaye having flashbacks to a club he attended earlier in the night, where he was serenaded by a mysterious women, and beat up by a duo of men that forced him to be on the run throughout the video. The video was directed by Anton Tammi, with various actions performed by The Weeknd in the visual being inspired by the films Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Joker.

Wheel In Motion is a 1992 live concert video by the Scottish Celtic rock band Runrig. It shows footage from the 1991 Loch Lomond concert, and various others from the tour of the same year. Originally released on VHS in 1992, it was remastered onto DVD in 2000.

Runrig was a Scottish Celtic rock band formed on the Isle of Skye, Scotland in 1973. From its inception, the band's line-up included songwriters Rory Macdonald and Calum Macdonald. The line-up during most of the 1980s and 1990s (the band's most successful period) also included Donnie Munro, Malcolm Jones, Iain Bayne, and Pete Wishart. Munro left the band in 1997 to pursue a career in politics and was replaced by Bruce Guthro. Wishart left in 2001 and was replaced by Brian Hurren. The band released fourteen studio albums, with a number of their songs sung in Scottish Gaelic.

Initially formed as a three-piece dance band known as 'The Run Rig Dance Band', the band played several low key events, and has previously cited a ceilidh at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow as their first concert. Runrig's music is often described as a blend of folk and rock music, with the band's lyrics often focusing upon locations, history, politics, and people that are unique to Scotland. Songs also make references to agriculture, land conservation and religion.

Since 1999, the band has gained attention in Canada, following Nova Scotian singer Bruce Guthro's entry to the band. In 2016, the band announced that it would retire from studio recording after the release of its 14th studio album, The Story and announced their final tour The Last Mile in 2017. On 17 and 18 August 2018, Runrig performed the final shows of their farewell tour, entitled The Last Dance, in Stirling City Park beneath the castle ramparts. An estimated 52,000 fans attended The Last Dance.

Coming on with a staccato delivery like 2 Chainz, but with material that is much more hardcore, Detroit MC IceWear Vezzo was a member of the Green Guyz crew who went solo in 2012. Born Chivez Smith in Detroit, some of Vezzo's close relatives and siblings lived in Minnesota where they formed the hip-hop group the Green Guyz. Vezzo ran his own Detroit-based version of the Green Guyz with the blessing of the original crew, but after a few regional hits, the MC decided to go it alone. In 2012 he dropped his debut mixtape The Clarity, while 2013 saw him release Clarity 2: Can't Stop the Count, featuring the breakout single "Money Phone." The track also appeared on his 2013 album The City Is Mine, and The Clarity 3 landed in 2014 and featured Vezzo's fellow Green Guyz cohort Webbo among its guests. He also issued the Solitaires album that year on his birthday, which happened to be Halloween, while the release of The Clarity 4 kicked off 2015, a year that saw him hit with the single "Moon Walken." The album Moon Walken followed in 2016. 2017 saw the release of the Price Goin' Up mixtape, which featured collaborations with Philthy Rich, Mozzy, BandGang Lonie Bands, Rocaine, and more.

Montreal weirdo-pop band TOPS formed in 2011 out of the disbandment of Silly Kissers, an early group that also included like-minded indie crooner Sean Nicholas Savage. TOPS were formed by longtime collaborators vocalist Jane Penny and guitarist David Carriere, and they were soon joined by drummer Riley Fleck and bassist Tom Gillies. The band was associated with the same scene that spawned acts like Doldrums, Grimes, and Mac DeMarco, and recorded its 2012 debut LP, Tender Opposites, for Arbutus Records, the label central to that scene. The album was met with critical praise for its strange blend of outsider perspectives and AM pop songcraft. Gillies was replaced by bassist Madeline Glowicki before the recording of TOPS' second album, 2014's dreamy Picture You Staring. For a deliberate change of environment, the group recorded its third LP at a house in Glendale, California. The resulting Sugar at the Gate arrived on Arbutus in June 2017 with Jackson MacIntosh (Sheer Agony) taking over on bass. The group added fifth member Marta Cikojevic on keyboards in time for a spring tour of Europe.

German rockers Pyogenesis began their career in the early '90s, making a gothic death metal hybrid that sounded much like Paradise Lost. They kept this style throughout their first two EPs, but started to tweak it on their first full-length album, 1995's Sweet X-Rated Nothings. The vocals were much clearer and the sound was a little less dark. But no one could have expected things to change as dramatically as they did when Pyogenesis released Twinaleblood to their shocked fan base later that year. Gone were the doomy lyrics and heavy riffs, replaced with a pop-punk sound that instantly alienated much of their audience and pushed their career in a much more commercial direction. Their follow-up, Unpop, was even more poppy and sweet, but at that point they had lost most of their metal audience and were making more headway with their alternative pop/rock sound. The band made the move from Nuclear Blast to Hamburg Records in 2002 and released the five-track EP I Feel Sexy, followed closely by the full-length She Makes Me Wish I Had a Gun, the latter of which spawned the hit single "Don't You Say Maybe." The next few years were relatively quiet, with the band playing out less and less, culminating in an official hiatus in 2005. In 2015 the band returned from its self-imposed exile with the AFM-issued concept album A Century in the Curse of Time, an eight-track set of all new material that dabbled in everything from sludge metal to prog and power pop. The like-minded, narrative-driven A Kingdom to Disappear, the second of a planned three-part trilogy, followed in 2017.

Musically and visually, Oslo's 1349 have roots deeply implanted in the second wave of Norwegian black metal. Their sound, complete with buzzing (rather than roaring) guitars, abundant blastbeats, Satanic lyrics, unclean vocals etc., is appended by ghastly corpse-paint, leather, spikes, fire breathing, and more on-stage. Early recordings, such as Liberation, and Beyond the Apocalypse, were drenched in lo-fi production, but won fans due to a sometimes-overwhelming physicality and aggression. Though hardly prolific -- they've issued less than ten albums in 22 years -- they are one of the few surviving entities from the era who continue releasing material and touring, while remaining -- with only two exceptions -- close to their sonic and aesthetic origins, as evidenced by 2014's Massive Cauldron of Chaos.

After four years of working on concert and festival stages, they returned to the studio and issued the Dødskamp EP in April of 2019, followed by a second EP in August, Through Eyes of Stone. Both recordings were back-to-basics affairs and were greeted by fans with enthusiasm. That October 1349 released their seventh full-length, The Infernal Pathway. Engineered by Jarrett Pritchard, the set contained guest lyrics by Kenneth "Destroyer" Svartalv, (Nocturnal Breed's bassist/lyricist S.A. Destroyer) on all but one song. The album was celebrated by critics and fans alike as a welcome return to traditional form.

Jan. 15, 2020 | Tom Huizenga -- When opera star Joyce DiDonato told us she wanted to sing centuries-old Italian love songs at the Tiny Desk we weren't surprised. But when she said she was bringing a jazz band to back her up, we did a double take. But that's Joyce, always taking risks. After all, the last time we filmed the down-to-earth diva, she insisted on singing an opera aria at the Stonewall Inn, the iconic gay tavern in Greenwich Village.

On paper, the idea of jazzing up old classical songs seems iffy. At the least it could come across as mannered and at worst, an anachronistic muddle. But DiDonato somehow makes it all sound indispensable, with her blend of rigor, wit and a sense of spontaneity.

The musical formula for these unorthodox arrangements makes room for typical jazz solos while DiDonato molds her phrases to the flexible rhythms and inserts old-school trills and flamboyant roulades.

Much of the credit goes to her crack band, especially trumpeter Charlie Porter with whom DiDonato trades riffs and raspy growls. Veteran bassist Chuck Israels, who keeps the music swinging hard, has played with everyone from Billie Holiday to the Kronos Quartet, and drummer Jason Haaheim's day job is principal timpanist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Pianist Craig Terry, co-mastermind of the project, directs the young artist program at the Chicago Lyric Opera.

But the star of the show is the continually amazing DiDonato, whose voice is certainly one of the great wonders of her generation. The flexibility of the instrument, the colors she conjures and her fine-tuned dynamic range are a few of the reasons she's still at the peak of her powers. She looks and sounds like she's having the time of her life.

"It's such a rush to be here," DiDonato said to the appreciative audience of NPR staffers. Believe me, Joyce, the rush was all ours.

Joyce DiDonato (née Flaherty; born February 13, 1969) is an American lyric-coloratura mezzo-soprano. She is notable for her interpretations of operas and concert works in the 19th-century romantic era in addition to works by Handel and Mozart.

She has performed with many of the world's leading opera companies and orchestras, and won multiple awards including the 2012 and 2016 Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Solo.
