Rapper DeJ Loaf, born Deja Trimble, grew up on the east side of Detroit, Michigan and started writing lyrics at a young age. She took music more seriously in high school, after she quit playing basketball at the junior varsity level. At some point she established her stage name, with DeJ pronounced similar to "beige" and Loaf a reference to her footwear preference. Through a period that included a few semesters of attending Saginaw Valley State and working as a janitor at a Chrysler factory, she continued to develop her talent but didn't gain much traction. In July 2014, two years after she released her first mixtape, she uploaded "Try Me," a low-key, melodic track produced by Ypsilanti native DDS, which caught the attention of Drake, who referenced it on Instagram. The platinum-selling star's acknowledgment increased DeJ's profile exponentially and set off a wave of unauthorized versions from fellow rappers. (DeJ did approve of a version that featured a verse from Wiz Khalifa.) She signed to Columbia, released a second mixtape, and appeared on the Aftermath release "Detroit vs. Everybody" beside fellow Detroiters Eminem, Royce da 5'9", Big Sean, Danny Brown, and Trick Trick. Columbia's official release of "Try Me" reached the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot Rap Songs chart. Second single "We Good," also produced by DDS, was released as her second major-label single. After a handful of headlining gigs, she closed out 2014 by opening for fan Erykah Badu at Detroit's Fox Theater. In 2015, she issued the #AndSeeThatsTheThing EP along with the hit single "Back Up" featuring Big Sean. In 2016, Loaf dropped a mixtape, All Jokes Aside, and another created in collaboration with Jacquees, Fuck a Friend Zone, appeared in 2017 followed later that year by a pair of singles, "No Fear" and "Big Ole Boss," from her forthcoming debut album Liberation.

With a gentle, lilting voice and melancholic demeanor to her songwriting, singer/songwriter/guitarist Johanna Warren filled all three of those roles for the Brooklyn indie folk band sTickLipS, which also featured Jonathan Nocera on electric guitar, Chris St. Hillaire on bass, and Jim Bertini on drums. The group released It Is Like a Horse It Is Not Like Two Foxes in 2009 and Zemi in 2012. The following year, Warren earned a spot singing backup as a member of Iron & Wine's touring band, which included an appearance on U.S. late-night TV's Conan in May 2013. That fall, she released her solo debut, the wispy, all-acoustic Fates. Somber and guitar-centric, much of the record featured double-tracked vocals or accompaniment by the album's engineer and mixer, Bella Blasko. In 2014, Warren's backing vocals appeared on Natalie Merchant's eponymous release, and she toured with Andrea Tomasi, performing with her during her set. Collaborating again with Blasko and relocated to Portland, Warren incorporated even more of her complex time signatures and nontraditional chord progressions on her sophomore album for a slightly less folk-sounding acoustic guitar-based set. Dedicated to the moon and nature's cycles, Numun was released by the Conor Oberst-founded Team Love Records in 2015.

An affable and thought-provoking Canadian singer/songwriter in the vein of folk-pop mainstays like the Lumineers and Mumford & Sons, Joshua Hyslop specializes in an atmospheric, soul-searching blend of brooding chamber pop and bucolic indie folk. Citing influences like Iron & WIne, Ryan Adams, Wilco, and Bon Iver, and hailing from Abbotsford, British Columbia, Hyslop issued his debut EP Cold Wind in 2011 via Nettwerk Records. Where the Mountain Meets the Valley, his critically acclaimed first studio long player, arrived the following year, with the next two years devoted to life on the road. "Yummy" is a song by Canadian singer Justin Bieber. It was released on January 3, 2020, along with a lyric video through Def Jam Recordings as the lead single from his upcoming fifth studio album, Changes. The song is Bieber's first solo single to be released in three years. Bieber notably joined the video-sharing social networking service TikTok on the day of the song's release.

The song received mixed reviews from music critics, with some praising the song's R&B sound, but many dismissing the lyrics. Bieber received criticism for the song's "excessive promotion". The song debuted at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, while reaching the top five in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and various other countries; and hitting number one only in New Zealand. The song's official music video was released on January 4, 2020. Bieber performed "Yummy" for the first time on Saturday Night Live on February 8, 2020.

One of the most active affiliates of the Quality Control label, Marlo, aka Lil Marlo, emerged from Atlanta in 2017 with output beside close friend and labelmate Lil Baby. He has since issued three solo mixtapes, including The Real1 (2019), and has appeared on both of QC's Control the Streets compilations.

A lifelong Atlantean, Marlo, born Rudolph Johnson, didn't consider getting involved with music until multiple acquaintances remarked that he should become a rapper. Fueled by his experiences on the streets, he was a quick study. He took part in a slew of Quality Control releases issued during the latter half of 2017. These included Lil Baby's Harder Than Hard track "Ride or Die," the full-length Lil Baby collaboration 2 the Hard Way, and a solo mixtape entitled The Wire. Additionally, he had two slots on the number five Billboard 200 entry Control the Streets, Vol. 1, featured with Lil Baby and Gucci Mane on "The Load" and showcased alone on "Live Like Dis," the finale. Within six months of 2018, Marlo was behind two more solo tapes, 9th Ward God and The Real1. The next year, he branched out with a verse on Yella Beezy's "Big Shit" and connected with City Girls and Offset for "Soakin Wet," a preview of Control the Streets, Vol. 2.

An Aussie progressive/experimental metal/post-hardcore outfit that wields both melody and might, Melbourne's Ocean Grove formed in 2010 around the talents of Luke Holmes (vocals), Jimmy Hall (guitar), Matt Henley (guitar), Dale Tanner (bass), and Sam Bassal (drums). The band debuted their self-described "odd world music" in 2013 on the independently released Outsider EP. A sophomore EP, Black Label, followed in 2015, and was reissued the following year via the Melbourne indie label UNFD with the addition of the single "Lights on Kind of Lover," which became the group's breakout hit. The Rhapsody Tapes, the band's highly anticipated full-length debut, arrived in early 2017.

YoungBoy Never Broke Again is a highly prolific rapper from Baton Rouge, Louisiana who has attracted a loyal following for his uncompromising street narratives. He debuted as one of 2015-2016's rising talents, but that trajectory altered slightly after a six-month prison sentence. Following his release in 2017, he became a regular fixture on the Billboard charts, frequently issuing mixtapes, EPs, and singles.

YoungBoy's first official full-length, Until Death Call My Name, was released in April of 2018, and soon charted in the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 album chart. The album included guest appearances from Future, Lil Baby, and Birdman, as well as the Top 40-charting single "Outside Today." Less than a month after the album was released, a mixtape titled Master the Day of Judgement appeared. A trilogy of EPs, 4Respect, 4Freedom, and 4Loyalty, arrived the following August and September. All three were then combined with an additional EP's worth of material as 4Respect 4Freedom 4Loyalty 4WhatImportant. The restlessly prolific artist released two additional mixtapes, Decided and Realer, before the end of the year. In October of 2019, the rapper released the mixtape AI YoungBoy 2, which debuted at number one.

Known for their nervy, melodic indie rock, Britain's Circa Waves first gained buzz in the 2010s with hooky singles like "Get Away" and "Stuck in My Teeth." Centered on lead singer/songwriter Kieran Shudall, the band earned favorable comparisons to the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and the Vaccines even before they hit the Top Ten with their debut, 2015's Young Chasers. Without shying away from their influences, the band has matured, and albums like 2017's Different Creatures and 2019's What's It Like Over There? showcase their deepening maturity and knack for crafting their own distinctively infectious, post-punk anthems.

The band's third full-length, What's It Like Over There?, arrived in 2019 and included the single "Movies." It again found the band working with Moulder embracing a more nuanced pop sophistication. In early 2020, Circa Waves returned with their fourth studio album, Sad Happy, which featured production by singer Shudall and mixing from Matt Wiggins and Dan Grech-Marguerat. Prior to the album's full release, it was split in half and issued on two separate EPs, Happy and Sad.

“I think most of it takes place in dreams,” Caleb Landry Jones says of his debut solo album, The Mother Stone. “I’m talking more about dreams than I am about what’s happened in the physical realm. Or I’m talking about both, and you’re not sure what’s what.”

This is the kind of conversation you end up having about a record like this one, a sprawling psychedelic suite built from abrupt and disorienting detours and schizoid shifts of voice, its manic energy forever pulling the tablecloth out from under classic pop orchestration. One minute you're squarely in the realm of biographical fact and a moment later you’re having a discussion about lucid dreaming and how Jones once punched up a dream set on a soccer field by willing himself to experience it from the POV of the ball. But maybe that’s just another story about grabbing the wheel of your own hallucination; maybe this pertains to the music after all.

Caleb Landry Jones (born December 7, 1989) is an American actor and musician, best known for his roles as Banshee in X-Men: First Class (2011), Jeremy Armitage in Get Out (2017), and Red Welby in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017).

Hot Snakes are an American post-hardcore band led by Rick Froberg and John Reis, formed in 1999 in San Diego, California. Reis and Froberg had previously performed together in Pitchfork and Drive Like Jehu, after which Reis had found international success with Rocket from the Crypt. Hot Snakes disbanded in 2005 but reunited in 2011.

Automatic Midnight is the first studio album by the San Diego, California post-hardcore band Hot Snakes, released in 2000 by Swami Records. Both the band and the album began as a "side project" for John Reis in June 1999, during time off from his main band Rocket From the Crypt. Reis wrote and recorded a batch of songs in San Diego with Delta 72 drummer Jason Kourkounis. To provide vocals for the tracks Reis called in Rick Froberg, whom he had played with in Pitchfork and Drive Like Jehu from 1986 to 1995. Most of the material from these sessions was used to create Automatic Midnight, which became the first release for Reis' newly formed Swami Records label.

As a visual artist and illustrator Froberg provided all of the artwork for the album. Although the artwork and cover themselves are black on white, the CD release is packaged in a translucent orange jewel case and the LP in translucent orange shrink wrap, giving the packaged album an orange color.

Creating lo-fi indie rock with mischievous lyrics delivered with deceptively bittersweet vocals, Anna Burch is an American alternative singer/songwriter from Detroit, Michigan. She developed a taste for the arts early on with an affinity for Disney songs during her childhood years and the work of Fiona Apple in her teens. Burch covered songs by the latter at open-mike nights and by the age of 18 she was recording and touring with her first band, Frontier Ruckus. She eventually went on to share lead vocal duties in the Ann Arbor-based Failed Flowers. It was during this time that Anna began to pen her own material. After a brief hiatus from music while she attended graduate school in Chicago, she returned to songwriting in Detroit in 2014. Her own songs had begun to take on more shape and structure, with friends on the scene encouraging Burch to assemble a live band to begin performing the demo ideas she had. With her ever-changing ideas, Anna eventually began to perform solo shows with a fully realized backing band. Her first official release was an eponymous split single with fellow Detroit artist Stef Chura in early 2016. The singer began earning comparisons to artists like Waxahatchee and Courtney Barnett before fellow Michigan-based musician Fred Thomas sent some of her demos to his label, Polyvinyl. This led to the attention of producer/engineer Collin Dupuis (Lana Del Rey, Angel Olsen), who offered to help mix her songs. The result consisted of nine songs that became Burch's debut album, Quit the Curse. The record saw release via Polyvinyl in early 2018.
