McGuinn, Clark & Hillman - "Don't You Write Her Off (TopPop)" [Rock & Alternative]

Don't You Write Her Off (TopPop)

"Don't You Write Her Off (TopPop)" music video by McGuinn, Clark & Hillman
Added: 16-02-2020
Genre : Rock & Alternative
Description : McGuinn, Clark & Hillman - Don't You Write Her Off • TopPop

McGuinn, Clark & Hillman came about in 1977, when three former members of the original Byrds -- Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, and Chris Hillman -- decided to try and update their sound in a new context. McGuinn and Hillman had played together longer than any of the other original members, with six albums (and innumerable concerts) across four years during the 1960s, and as late as 1967 they'd tried without success to reintegrate Gene Clark -- the best songwriter among them and a superb singer, but also the first to leave -- back into the band. Then, in early 1977, with each fronting his own band, they planned a joint tour of Europe promoting their own respective new releases. The Byrds were still idolized across Europe, even more so than in the United States, and ticket sales were brisk and press coverage enthusiastic.
(All Music Guiude)

This is a very rare performance of the band at the Toppop studios. In fact the only time Byrds legend Gene Clark visited the Netherlands.

Born Antoine McColister in Port St. Lucie, Florida, Ace Hood was raised by his mother in Deerfield Beach, 20 miles north of Miami. Rap music became his full-time obsession after he suffered a football injury in the tenth grade, effectively putting the kibosh on a professional sports career. By age 17, he was recording tracks for local imprint Dollaz n Dealz, and had put out a few street singles, including 2006's "M.O.E." (i.e., "Money Over Everything"). In November of the following year, Ace maneuvered his way into meeting DJ Khaled at local radio station 99 JAMZ and handed the Miami mixtape DJ his demo. Within a matter of weeks, DJ Khaled signed Ace, then 19 years old, as the first artist to his newly formed We the Best Music, which obtained distribution through Def Jam a few weeks after that.

Ace's Def Jam debut single, the Runners-produced "Cash Flow," featuring Rick Ross and ubiquitous hook singer T-Pain, arrived in early 2008 and turned out to be a smash hit on South Florida radio. A few mixtapes and guest appearances later, he released his first full-length, Gutta, in summer 2008. Ruthless followed the next year and, like its predecessor, peaked at number five on Billboard's R&B albums chart. Two years would pass before the ambitious Blood Sweat & Tears arrived, featuring some of Hood's best work to date. Trials & Tribulations followed in 2013 and found the rapper landing on Birdman's Cash Money label. Early the following year Hood dropped the free Starvation 3 mixtape, and in August of that year he released Body Bag 3. Trust the Process, the official follow-up to Trials & Tribulations, arrived in 2017, with Trust the Process II: Undefeated arriving the following year.

"Keep Talking" is a song from Pink Floyd's 1994 album, The Division Bell.

Written by David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Polly Samson, it was sung by Gilmour and also features samples of Stephen Hawking's electronic voice, taken from a BT television advertisement (this same commercial would be sampled again in "Talkin' Hawkin'" from Pink Floyd's next and final studio album, The Endless River). Gilmour chose to use the speech after crying to the commercial, which he described as "the most powerful piece of television advertising that I’ve ever seen in my life.” The song also makes some use of the talk box guitar effect.

Undoubtedly the first and probably the last hip-hop artist to sample Westlife, the multi-talented Ironik is one of the rising talents of the U.K.'s urban music scene. Born Michael Laurence in 1988, Ironik started DJing at the age of 13 at his uncle Steve Gordon's TwiceasNice parties and later earned a support slot on So Solid Crew's U.K. tour. At 16 he was producing for various artists, and at 20 he signed to the Asylum label, an offshoot of Atlantic/Warner Bros., under the moniker Ironik. Building up a loyal Internet following, he was voted the number one unsigned artist on MySpace for three months and his first single, "So Nice," became a staple on the urban music Channel U.

Ironik's second release, "Stay with Me," became his breakthrough hit, charting at number five in the U.K. Written about his fears for his ten-year-old sister growing up in a society rife with knife crime and violence, it bizarrely sampled "Written in the Stars," a track from Westlife's Unbreakable, Vol. 1: The Greatest Hits album. Inspired by U.K. grime artists Wiley and Dizzee Rascal, and U.S. hip-hop stars Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco, his debut album, No Point in Wasting Tears, appeared in 2008. Ironik also had his own radio show on Xtreme FM, and launched his own label, Venemous Records.

The Elton John-sampling and -featuring "Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer)" became his biggest chart entry, reaching number three in the U.K. in 2010. A pair of EPs, Independently Unstoppable and T.O.B.D (Ticking Off Boyhood Dreams), followed in 2013 and 2015, respectively, paving the way for his second album, 2017's Truth Be Told, on RU Listening Records.

God Dethroned were formed in 1991 by vocalist Henri Sattler with several friends (credited only as M. Beukeveld, M. Arends, and A. Dijkstra); the Dutch death metal band recorded a demo and got the opportunity to release an album on the small German label Shark in 1992. Titled The Christhunt, it did little commercially, and God Dethroned went on hiatus the following year, with Sattler forming a new group called Ministry of Terror. Following that band's 1994 album, Fall of Life, and a supporting European tour, Sattler decided to re-form God Dethroned with guitarist Jens, bassist Beef, and drummer Roel. This new lineup scored a deal with Metal Blade, which issued The Grand Grimoire in late 1997; the album was released in the U.S. the following year and achieved a fair amount of airplay on college-radio metal shows. The Christhunt was reissued later that year with the cover art the band had originally wanted (a dissected rat), and the official follow-up, Bloody Blasphemy, appeared in 1999. World Ablaze, the long-awaited third entry in their WWI series, was released in 2017.

Actor and pop-R&B vocalist Jacob Latimore first gained fame as a Radio Disney artist in the mid-2000s before coming to wider recognition with his 2007 single "Superstar." Along with singing, Latimore has appeared in film and TV projects including Vanishing on 7th Street, The Maze Runner, Detroit, and The Chi. He released his debut album, The Connection, in 2016.

Born Jacob O'Neal Latimore, Jr. in 1996 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Latimore got his first taste of fame at a very young age, when his first single, the 2005 release "Best Friend," was played on Radio Disney. Placed in Radio Disney's Incubator program, he performed with fellow child artists and appeared on Maury Povich's nationally televised talk show. Latimore and his family subsequently moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta, Georgia for the sake of advancing his budding entertainment career. His next single, "Superstar," was co-written and co-produced by Rico Love; it peaked at number 84 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in September 2007. Additional strides were made in 2010, when Latimore signed with the Jive label and appeared in the film Vanishing on 7th Street. Even though he had inked a major recording contract, he continued to act, with appearances on the television series Read Between the Lines and The Finder. He also released a series of mixtapes, including 2009's I Am the Future, and 2012's This Is Me.

Another single, "Like 'Em All," enjoyed an extended stay on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart and reached number 55 in December 2011. The suggestive (if respectful) "You Come First," released the following summer, also charted. Featuring guest vocals from T-Pain, the single "Heartbreak Heard Around the World" followed in 2014. Latimore returned in 2015 with another single, "The Climb," which also appeared on his debut album Connection. Released in 2016, it included the IshDARR collaboration "The Real." A fourth mixtape, This Is Me 3, arrived in 2019.

Spinning the raw emotions and unfettered delivery of power pop and emo, California outfit Joyce Manor emerged in the late 2000s with a blistering punk sound on their eponymous debut (2011) and follow-up Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired (2012). Developing restraint and slowing things down, they took cues from pop-punk and indie rock on major-label debut Never Hungover Again, which drew upon influences Weezer and Jawbreaker, a maturation that continued on 2016's Cody and 2018's Million Dollars to Kill Me.

Pop-oriented contemporary R&B artist Mya arrived in 1998, when she was 18 years old. Within only a few years, the singer, songwriter, and dancer had two platinum albums and a gold one, a clutch of Top Ten pop hits, and a Grammy Award. Just as significantly, she developed from an artist frequently compared to the likes of Brandy and Aaliyah into one with her own identity. Sounding innocent and knowing at the same time, while consistently upbeat and confident, she released some of the most memorable R&B singles of the late '90s and early 2000s, including "It's All About Me," "Case of the Ex," and "Fallen." Mya took her rightful place in a continuum of stylistically similar artists that gave way to Ciara, Rihanna, and Tinashe, among others, then went independent in the late 2000s as she divided her work between recording, acting, philanthropy, teaching, and even competing on Dancing with the Stars.

A natural talent, Quando Rondo was once a small child, secretly singing in the bathroom as a 9-year-old boy in Savannah, GA. His natural gravitation towards music lead to him to hip-hop; he began recording his fledgling verses on his cell phone. He quickly gained traction online, racking up millions of views on YouTube.

Fittingly, he titled his 2018 mixtape 'Life B4 Fame' with the hopes that things would change for the better once his career really took off. He was right—within two days, his mixtape had amassed more than one million streams on MyMixtapez. Things will only go up from there, and if the snippets from his forthcoming Rich Homie Quando project are any sign, he’s only only getting better with time.

Houston rapper and Sauce Factory affiliate Sosamann represents Splashtown with club-friendly, bass-heavy songs about partying and street life. Raised in the violent Braeswood area, Sosamann spun his ability as a storyteller (he once contemplated becoming an author) into rap, hooking up with the Sauce Twinz in 2014. He appeared on their mixtape Sauce Theft Auto: Splash Andreas the following year. His own club hit "Did a Whole Lot" attracted the attention of Wiz Khalifa, who signed Sosamann to his Taylor Gang. Later, Wiz would join Sosamann on "Not the Vine" from Sosamann's full-length Sauce Eskobar. The 2016 effort also featured Young Dolph, Sauce Walka, and Sancho Saucy.

Best remembered for the international smash "Unbelievable," the British dance-rock quintet EMF formed in October 1989 in Cinderford, England. All five members -- vocalist James Atkin, guitarist Ian Dench, keyboardist Derry Brownson, bassist Zachary Foley, and drummer Mark Decloedt -- were veterans of the local music scene before founding EMF, whose name supposedly stood for "Epsom Mad Funkers" (although it was widely speculated that the initials instead represented "Ecstasy Mind F*ckers"). Within two months of formation, the group played its first gig; after unearthing a Casio sampler and sequencer in a local thrift shop, a light techno element was added to the band's rock-oriented sound.

By the end of 1990, EMF's infectious debut single, "Unbelievable," had conquered the U.K. charts; it hit number one in the U.S. the following year. The 1991 album Schubert Dip was also successful, spawning another hit single in "Lies." (The LP also garnered considerable press when Yoko Ono objected to the group's use of a voice sample of Mark David Chapman, the murderer of John Lennon; the offending soundbite was later removed from future pressings.) In 1992, EMF returned with the EP Unexplained and the full-length effort Stigma; both releases performed badly on the charts, however, and the band effectively vanished from sight until 1995's Cha Cha Cha.
