Weird and wild enough to be associated with Soulja Boy, Andy Milonakis, O.G. Ron C., and Diplo's Mad Decent crew, Houston rapper Riff Raff first came on the scene in 2009 as a contestant on MTV's From G's to Gents, a competitive reality series where hardcore ballers tried to become sophisticates. According to OutKast associate and the show's host Fonzworth Bentley, Riff Raff was "beyond" his help, but "crazy like a fox" was another way to think of it, as the rapper had the MTV logo tattooed on his neck, thus allowing him to use the network's name legally on his MTV Riff Raff mixtapes, his posts to video-sharing sites, and all his free tracks uploaded to social media. Thanks to Riff Raff mentioning his phone number in his songs, he was contacted by like-minded rapper Dirt Nasty, along with Andy Milonakis, for some collaborative tracks that landed beginning in 2010, and by 2011 he was signed to Soulja Boy's label and production house, S.O.D. Money Gang Inc. The relationship didn't last long, as Riff Raff signed with Diplo's Mad Decent label in 2012 and issued his Birth of an Icon mixtape. The tape featured early hits like "Jose Canseco" and "Jody Highroller," along with the Action Bronson team-up "Bird on a Wire." He also teamed up with Milonakis and Nasty in 2012 for the project and album Three Loco, while 2013 saw him partner with DollaBillGates for the album Jumpin Out the Gym. In 2014, he went back to his solo career with the Mad Decent release Neon Icon. The album featured the singles "How to Be the Man" and "Tip Toe Wing in My Jawwdinz," and in 2015 it was remixed by DJ O.G. Ron C. for the release Purple Icon: Chopped Not Slopped. Released by the MC's own label, Neon Nation, Peach Panther followed in 2016. The album featured the single "Carlos Slim," the Gucci Mane and Danny Brown collaboration "I Drive By," and plenty of beats from the Atlanta production crew 808 Mafia. Later that year, he and DJ Afterthought released the highly collaborative Balloween, which featured guest spots from Skepta, Quavo, DJ Paul, and many others. Maintaining his prolific run, Riff Raff followed up in early 2017 with the Aquaberry Aquarius mixtape and the full-length LP, The White West. A collaborative album with DJ Afterthought, Cool Blue Jewels, kicked off 2018, with Alcoholic Alligator following just a few months later.

Rising from the streets of Compton but with a distinct Southern flair, rapper Roddy Ricch lays his introspective rhymes atop melodic trap, resulting in a hybrid form that has captured the ears of both regions. The MC broke through in 2018 with the platinum single "Die Young" and topped the Billboard 200 the next year with Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial.

Influenced by artists such as Meek Mill, Future, Speaker Knockerz, and Young Thug (as well as the stylings of Atlanta trap and Chicago drill), Ricch began recording in his bedroom at the age of 16, honoring his family's Louisiana roots while chronicling Los Angeles street life. His debut effort, Feed tha Streets, arrived in late 2017. The following year would see Ricch's big breakthrough, starting with the release of his Be 4 tha Fame EP. That summer, he issued the single "Die Young," produced by London on da Track. The song became a viral hit and propelled the young rapper into the mainstream consciousness, racking up millions of streams within months, and was eventually certified platinum. In November 2018, Ricch released Feed tha Streets II, a second collection of his melodic rap and hypnotic beats. After he hit the Hot 100 with the consecutive 2019 singles "Big Stepper," "Start wit Me," and "Tip Toe," he released Please Excuse Me for Being AntiSocial. His first proper album, it entered the Billboard 200 that December at number one. While the album remained in the upper reaches of the chart well into 2020, Ricch took home a Grammy Award that January for his part on Nipsey Hussle's "Racks in the Middle."

American sibling duo Ayo & Teo scored a viral hit in 2017 with their single "Rolex." Born Ayleo and Mateo Bowles in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the pair grew up with the sounds of Michael Jackson, Usher, Missy Elliot, and Chris Brown. They honed their dancing skills in elementary school, later establishing a popular social media page that issued viral dance challenges. "Rolex" happened to be one of these hits, eventually racking up over 30 million streams on YouTube and storming the Billboard Hot 100. Wearing their trademark bear facemasks, they issued their first single, "In Reverse," in 2016. They danced in Usher's video for "No Limit" and at the 2016 BET Awards, later signing with Columbia Records. "Lit Right Now" arrived in early 2017, but was soon eclipsed by the infectious anthem "Rolex," which echoed similar trap-influenced pop hits like Migos' "Bad and Boujee," Rae Sremmurd's "Black Beatles," and D.R.A.M.'s "Broccoli." In 2018, Ayo & Teo returned with the BL$$D-produced single "Hold My Sauce."

Memphis rapper NLE Choppa rose to fame almost overnight on the back of a viral hit and a charismatic social media presence. At just 16, the rapper was fielding record deal offers from major labels, sometimes with advances in the millions. Ever the entrepreneur, NLE Choppa turned down the contracts, opting instead for a distribution deal that allowed him to keep the rights to his music. With just a few punchy tracks to his name, the young rapper was already world famous by early 2019, with streaming numbers in the millions.

NLE Choppa was born Bryson Potts in 2002. Raised in a rough part of Memphis, Potts focused on basketball when growing up but began freestyling with friends at age 14. The next year he decided to take his music to the next level, entering the studio and putting down raps inspired by Southern rappers like NBA Youngboy, Meek Mill, and Lil Wayne. He first went under the name YNR Choppa and released several tracks under that moniker. He soon switched over to using the name NLE Choppa, the NLE standing for his brand "No Love Entertainment." Along with other teenage rapper friends he posted several videos, some gaining traction regionally. It was his January 2019 single, "Shotta Flow," that broke through worldwide, with an exciting and boisterous video accumulating tens of millions of views in a matter of months. From there, major-label interest began, but Choppa turned all offers down, keeping ownership of his songs. He spent most of 2019 releasing new singles, including installments like "I Don't Need No Help," "Shotta Flow 2," "Shotta Flow 3," and "Camelot." These culminated in his debut EP, Cottonwood, which arrived in November that year.

June 29, 2009 | Stephen Thompson

The Omaha-based folk-pop duo Azure Ray was built around the tension between its two very different halves: the playful experimentation of Orenda Fink and the straight-to-the-heart melancholy of Maria Taylor. Ever since Azure Ray went on hiatus in 2004, Fink and Taylor have released solo records and side projects — Fink popped up as half of O+S earlier this year, while both have performed in Now It's Overhead and Bright Eyes — that play to their respective strengths. In the case of Taylor, that's meant three terrific albums (11:11, Lynn Teeter Flower and the new LadyLuck) that bleed wistful beauty.

Azure Ray just announced a short reunion tour, with an album on the way thereafter, so it's a good time to revel in the quiet, sweet sadness of Taylor's solo side. It's clear from this Tiny Desk Concert, recorded without amplification at the desk of All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen while Bob was on vacation, that Taylor has never made a go of it as a busker: In terms of volume, she's closer to Laura Gibson than Tom Jones. But hers is a wonderfully warm presence, and the setting brings out her songs' winsome essence.

This three-song set features a pair of highlights of LadyLuck — the title track and the first single, "Time Lapse Lifeline" — before closing with a devastating song from Lynn Teeter Flower. Given a spare acoustic reading, "Clean Getaway" closes the set on a tender, reflective note. Amplification wouldn't have done it justice.

Maria Diane Taylor (born May 21, 1976) is an American singer/songwriter from Birmingham, Alabama. She is also a member of the duo Azure Ray with Orenda Fink. Taylor plays several instruments, including the piano, guitar, and drums, and has collaborated or performed with such artists as Bright Eyes, Moby, Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Joshua Radin, Nik Freitas and more.

Houston rapper Trill Sammy started out when he was just in high school, part of the generation of millennial rappers who utilized social media to spread their music. After posting his short freestyle with Born Stunna, "Netflix and Chill," in 2015, he went viral with local fans and continued to build a following online. With a sound similar to Lil Uzi Vert and Migos, the young Texan adopted an Atlanta trap sound aimed at putting the spotlight on his hometown. Sammy's first big break came in 2015 on the joint track "Just Watch" with fellow Houston rapper Dice Soho, head of the local Icey Gang crew. Sammy released "Check Out" in 2016, a video game-sampling dose of laid-back trap with Auto-Tune and a Desiigner-esque beat. His debut EP, Red Album, also arrived that year, featuring Soulja Boy on the track "Trappin'," as well as appearances by Slim Thug and Kirko Bangz. He quickly followed with the Trappin' EP that summer, which included the tracks "Uber Everywhere" and "Martin." In 2018, he issued singles "Do Not Disturb" and "Feel Better" with Rae Sremmurd's Slim Jxmmi.

Theatrical Finnish horror-show metallists who pulled off the unthinkable and brought home the top prize at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, Lordi's operatic sound and monster-movie stage persona have helped make them one of the more outlandish and compelling groups in contemporary heavy metal. Emerging in 2002 with Get Heavy, Lordi would go on to amass a huge regional following via chart-topping albums like The Arockalypse (2006) and Monstereophonic (Theaterror vs. Demonarchy) (2016).

Finnish singer/songwriter Bobby Oroza is a throwback performer known for his dusky brand of '60s soul and R&B-influenced pop.

This LoveA native of Helsinki, Oroza grew up in a musical family of Bolivian and Finnish descent. He became interested in music at a young age while at family functions where he was exposed to Latin music, Motown, and jazz, as well as South American folk and Nuyorican salsa. He started playing guitar and drums, and eventually began performing in high school. While still a teenager, he traveled to Santiago de Cuba where he studied percussion and singing. Returning home, he embarked on a production and recording career, playing in various bands in Finland. In 2019, he issued his debut solo album This Love.

Fusing a savvy contemporary pop sound with a streetwise rock & roll vibe, Young Rising Sons formed in 2010 in Red Bank, New Jersey. Guitarist Dylan Scott, bassist Julian Dimagiba, and drummer Steve Patrick, who had played together in various bands since high school, caught an acoustic set by Ohio-born singer, songwriter, and guitarist Andy Tongren in a New York City bar. Realizing that this was the voice they needed in their band, Scott, Dimagiba, and Patrick asked Tongren to join. The chemistry in the new quartet was immediate; influenced by classic pop acts like the Beatles and the Temptations, and by the melodic hard rock of Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, and others, Young Rising Sons developed a bright, modern hard pop sound with electronic accents and edgy lyrics that won them fans whenever they played.

Signing with the New York-based production company Dirty Canvas Music, the band released a regional single, "High," which garnered a lot of attention in the press and received a good deal of local airplay. The single in turn led to a deal with Interscope Records, which set the band to work recording a self-titled debut EP. "High" from the EP racked up over ten million streams, and later the same year, they released the track "Habits (Stay High)," which became another solid hit, with more than 3.5 million online plays. Young Rising Sons released a second EP, The Kids Will Be Fine, in 2015, which featured yet another song about getting messed up, "F**ked Up," that also became a digital hit. In May 2016, Dylan Scott left the band. Five months later, the group released their first music since his departure, the three-song EP Undefeatable +2. A non-album single, "Carry On," appeared in February 2017, followed in 2018 by a second non-album track "+WHISKEY-."

Jenny Lewis - "Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" [Pop, Live In Concert]

Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

"Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" music video by Jenny Lewis
Added: 02-03-2020
Genre : Pop, Live In Concert
Description : Jenny Lewis: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Feb. 24, 2020 | Bob Boilen -- Having seen Jenny Lewis' recent concert spectacle, with its Las Vegas sparkle — complete with a multi-level stage — I loved the contrast her Tiny Desk Concert provided.

Jenny arrived at NPR with just her acoustic guitar and bandmates Emily Elbert, who sang and played guitar, and Anna Butterss on upright bass and vocals. Stripped of all the glitz, it was the words that found their way to my heart. A consummate storyteller, going as far back to her days with her band Rilo Kiley, Jenny's words have comforted and inspired so many.

She sings two of her three Tiny Desk songs from her fourth solo record, On the Line. These are tough breakup songs, though she redirects all the pain into thoughtful fun. She even turned "Rabbit Hole" into an NPR sing-along and gave us all a Hot Pockets surprise. You'll have to watch for that one.

SET LIST
"Rabbit Hole"
"Do Si Do"
"Just One Of The Guys"

MUSICIANS
Jenny Lewis: vocals, guitar; Emily Elbert: guitar, vocals; Anna Butterss: bass, vocals
