Bringing the spirit of Death Row Records to the 2010s, Sacramento MC Mozzy spits gritty rhymes with ominous productions. Born Timothy Patterson, he began rapping in 2004 under the name Lil Tim, releasing the "U Ain't Ready Like Dat" single in 2010. A name change came in 2011 when he issued the album Money Means Mozzy, which was followed by his 2013 mixtape The Tonite Show, hosted by DJ Fresh. Four mixtapes dropped in 2014, including Free Mozzy, which was issued while the MC was locked up on illegal firearm charges. Gangland landed in 2015 along with Yellow Tape Activities, and 2016 saw the Empire label issue both Beautiful Struggle and Mandatory Check. That same year, he contributed to a slew of collaborations with artists like Dutch Santana, E Mozzy, Juneonnabeat, and Philthy Rich. He followed in early 2017 with Fake Famous, which featured appearances by Iamsu!, E Mozzy, Cellyru, YFN Lucci, YG, G-Eazy, Jadakiss, and many more. After issuing the collaborative Can't Fake the Real with Blac Youngsta and Dreadlocks & Headshots with Gunplay, Mozzy released 1 Up Top Ahk, which debuted in the Top 100 on the Billboard main album chart in the summer of 2017. After appearing on the chart-topping soundtrack to the film Black Panther, Mozzy issued "Nobody Knows" with Jay Rock and DCMBR. A prolific 2018 included the Spiritual Conversations EP, as well as full-length Gangland Landlord. That year, he also joined Kae One for the collaborative set, Run It Up Activities (Team Player Records), which also featured the Jacka, Philthy Rich, and E Mozzy. In early 2019, Mozzy and Berner teamed up for the collaborative mixtape Slimey Individualz, which Mozzy followed up in May with the heartfelt "Legal Guardian/Guardian Angel," a track that paid homage to his grandmother.

Known for her soft, lo-fi folk sound, London's Bea Regner, aka Beabadoobee, first emerged online with her sweetly attenuated 2017 viral single "Coffee." Only 17 at the time, she signed with the Dirty Hit label, which issued her second EP, Patched Up, in 2018.

Born in London to Filipino parents, Regner first became interested in music around age seven, and grew up listening to a mix of OPM (Filipino traditional and modern original music compositions and '80s pop/rock. By her teens she had discovered indie rock and was listening to artists like Kimya Dawson, Karen O & Yeah Yeah Yeahs, (Sandy) Alex G, and Florist, as well as the Beatles and Chet Baker. In 2017, at age 17, she received her first guitar and quickly taught herself how to play by watching tutorial videos online. That same year, she recorded her song "Coffee" in a friend's bedroom, and uploaded it online. A mellow ditty inspired by her relationship with her then-boyfriend, the song went viral, with its video getting over 300,000 views, and gaining even more hits on streaming services. The labels took notice, and Bea issued her debut EP Lice on Columbia before signing with the independent Dirty Hit (home to the 1975, Pale Waves, and Wolf Alice). In 2018, she issued a second EP, Patched Up. Another EP, Loveworm, arrived in April 2019, followed several months later by the single "She Plays Bass."

Ava Cherry (aka Black Barbarella) was raised in Chicago. The singer/model grew up loving Motown, Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight, but a four-year stint with rock star David Bowie would forever change her musical direction. From 1974 to 1978, as part of a backing trio comprising Robin Clark and Luther Vandross, she performed onstage and in the studio with Bowie, appearing on some his most-acclaimed albums. Lovers as well, Cherry and Bowie remained friends throughout the years. The experience spoiled Cherry; she traveled all over the world, sang before crowds of 50,000 people, and mingled with superstars like John Lennon, the Rolling Stones, and others.

After she split with Bowie, Cherry returned home to Chicago where a friend introduced her to Curtis Mayfield. Curtom/RSO Records released her first album, Spend the Night, in a snug disco/soul bag and didn't use any of the hard rock songs she'd written. The Curtom album didn't do as well as anticipated and Cherry returned to Bowie's camp.

Her second album Streetcar Named Desire followed in 1983 on Capitol Records, but it went unnoticed. When Vandross started blowing up, she joined him in 1986 and was heard on the Any Love album onward. In 1987, her second Capitol LP, Picture Me, dropped with little celebrity or sales. However, along with Lisa Fischer and Kevin Owens, Cherry contributed to making Luther Vandross a top draw in urban music. The group didn't just sing behind Vandross; they executed some classy stepping and dance routines that always wowed the patrons. In 1997, J-Bird made her Spend the Night album available on CD.

Originating from the Netherlands' North Brabant province, W&W are an electronic dance music DJ and production duo who have specialized in commercial, big-room house and trance. The Ws stand for Willem van Hanegem and Wardt van der Harst. They met in 2007 and quickly gained support from the likes of Tiësto and David Guetta, as well as Armin van Buuren, whose radio show, A State of Trance, began to regularly feature the duo's prolific supply of productions and remixes the same year. Van Hanegem and van der Harst released a double-length album, Impact, in 2011, but they reached a much broader audience in 2014 with "Bigfoot," a single that cracked the Top 30 of the Dutch Single Top 100 chart and dented Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs survey in the U.S. Also in 2014, W&W began a long-running program, Mainstage -- named after their label, Mainstage Music -- broadcast on the Netherlands' SLAM! station. The duo steadily recorded and performed during the next few years. In 2017, they debuted their trance-oriented WNYR ("new year") side project with a remix of Ed Sheeran's "Castle on the Hill."

Arguably the most influential and successful European thrash metal band despite some competition from outfits such as Sodom, Destruction and Tankard, Germany's Kreator are by far the most enduring. Like many of their European speed metal brethren, Kreator fused the big four's --Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer-- thrash innovations with Venom's proto-black metal imagery, sparked it with Motörhead's balls-out velocity, and capped it off with the nihilistic outlook typical of heavy metal since the seminal days of Black Sabbath. Kreator's career also mirrored speed metal's rising and waning fortunes: building from strength to strength throughout the 1980s culminating in two now classic albums, 1989's Extreme Aggression and the following year's Coma Of Souls. As the new decade gave birth to grunge, Kreator felt it necessary to evolve, spending most of the rest of the decade taking their collective foot off the gas and exploring various combinations of industrial, goth-rock, and alternative sounds culminating on 1999's post-metal Endorama. Its reception was their best received offering in nearly a decade and kicked off a creative rebirth at the dawn of the new century, evidenced by 2001's universally lauded comeback, Violent Revolution, from which they never turned back. Now in their fourth decade, Kreator are certified worldwide superstars who tour as widely and frequently as bands literally half their age, delivering standard-bearing recordings such as 2012's Phantom Antichrist.

In 2010 the band signed to leading German metal stable Nuclear Blast before embarking on a 25th anniversary tour of North America, which was followed in short order by the European Thrashfest tour with contemporaries such as Death Angel and Exodus. Their first album for their new label was 2012's Phantom Antichrist, which saw them in fine form and was hailed as one of their best in years; it was also a major commercial success in Germany, rising to number five on the album charts, the group's strongest showing to date in their homeland. The road-hungry band promoted the album with yet another tour, culminating in an explosive, sold-out show in their hometown of Oberhausen in front of a packed audience of die-hard fans, which was recorded and filmed for the 2013 live album and DVD Dying Alive. Like Phantom Antichrist, Dying Alive proved there was still a ready audience for Kreator, with the album hitting number nine on the German charts. Despite this it would be a long five years before fans were treated to new material. It was finally announced in 2016 that their 14th studio album, Gods of Violence, would be released in 2017, which would mark the end of the longest recording gap in the band's history.

A natural talent, Quando Rondo was once a small child, secretly singing in the bathroom as a 9-year-old boy in Savannah, GA. His natural gravitation towards music lead to him to hip-hop; he began recording his fledgling verses on his cell phone. He quickly gained traction online, racking up millions of views on YouTube.

While still working with a hard-edged production and powerful delivery, rapper Quando Rondo opted for a more emotionally nuanced lyrical approach and R&B undercurrents that set him apart from the vast majority of his peers. Even when flowing over-stylized trap beats, his songs were intelligent and complex while still incorporating enough melodic elements to keep them pop friendly. Quando Rondo's rise was massive and quick, perhaps best exemplified by the titles of his inspired mixtapes Life B4 Fame, released in April 2018, and Life After Fame, released just five months later.

Contemporary R&B artist Elijah Blake, who has also been credited under his birth name of Sean Fenton, as well as Redd Stylez, broke through as a songwriter for an impressive list of stars within his genre, including Trey Songz, Rihanna, Keyshia Cole, and Ciara. Most notably, he contributed to Usher's "Climax," a hit single that topped Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in 2012. All the while, Blake's solo career was in development. Through producer No I.D.'s ARTium, he aligned with Def Jam and released the single "X.O.X.," featuring labelmate Common, in 2013. The following year, Blake returned the favor on Common's "Real," which was quickly trailed by another solo single, "Wicked," as well as an EP, Drift. A frequent collaborator, Blake was also featured on tracks by the Game ("Freedom"), Rick Ross ("Presidential"), and the MIDI Mafia ("Sing for Me"). His debut album, Shadows & Diamonds, was released in June 2015 with an appearance from Dej Loaf and input from No I.D. and Salaam Remi. The set debuted at number 21 on the R&B/hip-hop chart. Sheppard are a six-piece indie pop group from Brisbane, Australia. Formed as a duo in 2009 by siblings Amy (vocals) and George Sheppard (vocals/keys), the group slowly expanded to include their sister Emma Sheppard on bass, along with friends Jay Bovino (vocals, guitar), Michael Butler (guitar), and Dean Gordon (drums). Featuring a buoyant mix of strong harmonies and catchy, uptempo pop, the band released its self-titled debut EP in August 2012 and quickly expanded its touring horizons, playing festivals in America, South Africa, and the U.K.

Bombs Away!By the following summer, their EP had peaked at number 18 on the Australian charts and they had been nominated for an ARIA music award. In February 2014 they issued the single "Geronimo," which shot to number one at home while also gaining traction in Europe and beyond. Prior to recording their first album, Sheppard signed with Decca Records internationally, yet remained independent in their home country. Released in July 2014, their debut LP, Bombs Away!, was a major success, reaching number two on the Australian charts before getting a worldwide release a few months later. The single "Geronimo" charted across Western Europe as well as in the U.S. and Canada, and hit number one in Australia.

The first single off their sophomore album, "We Belong," appeared in late 2016 and was followed the next spring by "Keep Me Crazy," which returned them to the Australian Top 40. Finally, in 2018, they delivered the full-length Watching the Sky, which also featured the Australian chart-topping, gold-certified single "Coming Home."

Channeling the imaginations and aesthetics of forebears like Sia and Lady Gaga, Albanian-American pop singer/songwriter Ava Max delivers empowering, dance-friendly anthems similar to contemporaries such as Bebe Rexha, Sigrid, and Dua Lipa. Emerging in the late 2010s, she appeared on collaborations with Le Youth, Witt Lowry, and David Guetta while also releasing her own singles, including her breakthrough smash hit "Sweet but Psycho," which topped the charts in almost two dozen countries.

Born Amanda Ava Koci in Wisconsin, she was raised by Albanian immigrant parents in Virginia. She started singing at a young age and was already active in singing competitions by the time she reached high school. After moving to Los Angeles to pursue music full time, she joined local disco revival producer Le Youth on his bright dance track "Clap Your Hands," which became a summer hit in 2017. The next year, she showcased her Sia-esque vocals with debut solo single "My Way" (Atlantic) before following with "Slippin" and "Not Your Barbie Girl," which interpolated Aqua's '90s classic. That year, she also joined rapper Witt Lowry on his track "Into Your Arms" and David Guetta on "Let It Be Me" from his album 7. Ava Max issued her biggest hit to date that summer as breakthrough single "Sweet but Psycho" -- an addictive pop gem produced by Cirkut (the Weeknd, Katy Perry, Rihanna) -- began charting across Europe. As the song built momentum across the globe, she signed with Full Stop Management, home to Charli XCX, Harry Styles, HAIM, and others.

By summer 2019, "Sweet but Psycho" had topped the charts on over a dozen charts in Europe, as well as in New Zealand and on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. The sleeper hit was soon certified platinum in Australia, the U.S., and the U.K. Max followed with modest hit "So Am I," which got the K-pop remix treatment with guests NCT 127. Gearing up for her official full-length, she released additional singles "Blood, Sweat & Tears," "Freaking Me Out," and "Slow Dance" with AJ Mitchell.

March 20, 2020 | Bob Boilen -- Arthur Moon came to the Tiny Desk armed with tiny keyboards, some toys, and (spoiler alert) a roll of aluminum foil. This band, the project of singer Lora-Faye Åshuvud has the quirky freshness I first heard from New York artists such as Laurie Anderson and Talking Heads in the late 1970s and more recently with Dirty Projectors. It comes off in the starkness of the sound, a spaciousness that leaves room for me to hear the storytelling in the songs, but always surprising me with aural delights.

The opening song at the Desk, "Homonormo," begins with a kiss-off to the very city that birthed their sound, and a search for something normal, yet twisted.

Send my kindest regards to New York
I'm gone, woo
I think I want to settle down
But weirder"

All three songs in this performance come from their brilliant self-titled 2019 album, an album too many missed, in my opinion. And this band pulls off these odd, unpredictable twists and turns with simplicity and charm. Playing the mini Mellotron and more is Cale Hawkins, who was last at the Tiny Desk with Raveena. Martin D. Fowler plays guitar and the bass lines on a Moog Bass. Aviva Jaye brought a table of toys and a wonderful voice, and Dave Palazola plays drums, cueing some of his with electronic triggers. There's anxiety in these songs, even when the chorus is "I Feel Better," but there's a creative spirit in this anxiety, and then, of course too, there's the tin foil.

"Reverse Conversion Therapy"
"I Feel Better"

The project of Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Lora-Faye Åshuvud, Arthur Moon emerged in 2017 with Our Head, an EP of experimental art-pop that blended approachable melodicism with unconventional song structures and a cerebral bent. Moon's adventurous 2019 full-length debut expanded on her eclectic approach, utilizing various electro-acoustic elements and a sort of collage aesthetic.

A New York native, Åshuvud initially rose out of the folk and indie rock scenes before adopting the Arthur Moon moniker to convey her more exploratory composition style. Often fashioning her lyrical ideas from cut-up magazines and newspapers, she worked with collaborators Nick Lerman, Marty Fowler, Dave Palazola, Aviva Jaye, and Cale Hawkins to create the unusual pop framework of her first EP, Our Head, which arrived in March 2017. Over the next two years, Åshuvud continued to hone her approach, returning in August 2019 with her self-released Arthur Moon full-length debut.

The Vaccines - "I Never Go Out On Fridays" [Rock & Alternative]

I Never Go Out On Fridays

Description : The Vaccines - I Never Go Out On Fridays

made this demo a couple of years ago and didn't think it would ever surface, but it's recently taken on a whole new meaning and wanted to share because we've always loved it! I guess we'll all see the light of day in time ;)

Infectious London-based indie rock outfit the Vaccines formed in the late 2000s around the talents of Justin Young (vocals, guitar), Árni Arnason (bass), Freddie Cowan (guitar), and Pete Robertson (drums). The quartet, which has drawn comparisons to everyone from Surfer Blood and the Drums to the Strokes and the Jesus and Mary Chain, released its debut single, "Post Break-Up Sex," on Columbia Records in February 2011, in anticipation of a full-length studio album later in the year. That debut, What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?, appeared in the U.K. that March, showing up on North American shores two months later. Released in 2012, Come of Age, the band's sophomore outing, was produced by Ethan Johns and recorded at ICP Studios in Brussels, Belgium and the Distillery in Bath, England. For their third studio album, the Vaccines opted for a change of pace: they traveled to America to record 2015's English Graffiti with producer Dave Fridmann (who previously worked with the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev), with experimental hip-hop producer Cole M. Greif-Neill also taking part in the sessions. English Graffiti appeared in late May 2015. In January 2018, the band released the single "I Can't Quit" in anticipation of the arrival of their fourth long-player, Combat Sports, which dropped later that March.

Glaswegian metal band Bleed from Within's combination of crushing guitars with sweeping melodies has made them a favorite on the U.K.'s live metal scene. The band formed in 2005 at their local youth club in Hamilton -- just outside of Glasgow, Scotland -- where they met up to play Lamb of God covers. Initially the band consisted of Scott Kennedy (vocals), Ali Richardson (drums), Craig Gowans (bass), Dave Lennon (guitar), and Scott McCreadie (guitar). In the next two years, the group graduated from covers and managed to self-record two EPs, 2006's Eyes of the Forgotten and 2007's Welcome to the Plague Year. The EPs caught the attention of Rising Records, who signed them in 2008 and released their debut album, Humanity, the year after. Soon after their debut, the line-up underwent some changes, with McCreadie bowing out and Gowans switching from bass to guitar; they hired Dave Provan as their new bassist. In 2010, the group found widespread recognition after taking part in Metal Hammer's Razor Tour alongside Sylosis and While She Sleeps. Capitalizing on their new-found popularity, they released their sophomore album, Empire, later the same year.

The next two years saw several more changes, most notably Martyn Evans replacing Lennon on guitar and a switch to Century Media Records; their third album, Uprising, arrived in 2013 on the new label. The rest of the year was dedicated to touring, including support slots for Testament and Megadeth, and a slot on Metal Hammer's Defenders of the Faith IV Tour with Amon Amarth, Hell, and Carcass. In 2014, the band crowd-funded their Death Walk EP, posited as a bridge between their fourth and fifth album. However, their fifth album was delayed by four years as the band worked through personal issues, including Evans' departure. They attempted to continue as a four-piece for a time, although they concluded that they would not be able to operate without two guitars, leading to the arrival of Steven Jones. Their fifth album, Era, was eventually released in 2018, again on Century Media.

Directed by Jakob Arevarn

Originally named "Uninterred," Swedish black metal band Naglfar was started in 1992 by vocalist Jens Rydén and bassist Kristoffer Olivius, and has its roots in the era's convoluted post-thrash scene. They were soon joined by guitarists Morgan Hansson and Andreas Nilsson, and, for a time, Nocturnal Rites drummer Ulf Andersson also lent a hand, but 1994's Stellae Trajectio demo was eventually recorded with a drum machine. A human drummer, Mattias Holmgren, was in place by the time of 1995's Vittra debut album, which was released by Wrong Again Records to mostly positive reviews. Still, neither it, nor its belated follow-up, 1998's Diabolical (featuring new drummer Mattias Grahn), managed to stand out amid the stiff competition of the day, so Naglfar busied themselves with touring, embarking on a European tour supporting American deathsters Deicide later that year. The next half-decade was spent in flux: occasional major festival and tribute album appearances, punctuated by lengthy periods of inactivity. Hansson was replaced by guitarist Marcus "Vargher" Norman (ex-Bewitched) in the year 2000. Despite these chronic setbacks, Naglfar eventually struck a new deal with metal powerhouse Century Media in 2002, and after revving their long-silenced engines with that year's Ex Inferis EP, they finally delivered their third album, Sheol, in 2003. Pariah arrived in 2005, followed by Harvest in 2007.

A progressive metal outfit from Tunisia, Myrath honor their regional heritage by incorporating middle eastern instrumentation into their heady mix of power metal and cinematic prog rock. Based out of the coastal city of Ezzahra, the group was originally formed in 2001 as a covers band by guitarist Malek Ben Arbia, who at the time was only 13 years old. As the band continued to improve and develop some progressive muscle, they began writing originals and making festival appearances. In 2007, after issuing a Tunisia-only demo called Double Face two years prior, Myrath released their official debut album, Hope. Desert Call arrived in 2010, followed by Tales of the Sands (2011), and Legacy (2016).
