Earning his nickname with a life of crime that landed him a two-year stint in jail, Atlanta MC Trouble had just signed a recording contract when he was caught in a home invasion that ended in kidnapping and armed-robbery charges. The contract was with Duct Tape Entertainment, and Trouble (born Mariel Semonte Orr in Atlanta, Georgia) was working in the studio with label boss Big Bank Black the day the home invasion went down. He served his sentence until December 17, 2010, and a year later, he used that date as the title of his debut mixtape. In 2014, his album All on Me was released on that very same day. It marked the start of a prolific run for Trouble as he channeled his creative energy into a deluge of mixtapes including #ZayDidIt (2015), Skoob Fresh (2015), Skoobzilla (2016), and Year in 2016 (2017). His 2016 collaboration with fellow Atlanta rapper YFN Lucci, the single "Key to the Streets," reached number 70 on Billboard's Hot 100. In 2018, Trouble signed with Ear Drummer Records, issuing "Bring It Back" with Drake and Mike WiLL Made-It and another Mike WiLL single, "Real Is Rare."

Houston rapper Trae tha Truth (who has also performed as just Trae) has been an H-town staple since the late '90s when he made his debut on Z-Ro's Look What You Did to Me. Born Frazier Othel Thompson, Trae is a member of both the Screwed Up Click and Guerilla Maab, as well as a part of the duo ABN ("Assholes by Nature"), who released two LPs in the early 2000s. Trae's first album, Losing Composure, was released in 2003, and featured a number of other local favorites like Bun B, Paul Wall, and Chamillionaire. He followed with Same Thing Different Day and Restless before branching out to a wider audience with 2008's Life Goes On, which brought in Lil Wayne and Jadakiss. That year, the mayor of Houston would declare July 22 as Trae Day, an honor awarded to the rapper for his work with the local community.

In 2011, Trae released Street King. The effort was packed with guests like Jadakiss, Lil Wayne, Lupe Fiasco, Wyclef Jean, Shawty Lo, Wale, and Big Boi, among others. Soon after, he signed with T.I.'s Grand Hustle label. After releasing the mixtape I Am King, his Grand Hustle debut was issued in 2015. Tha Truth -- which featured Future, Boosie Badazz, J. Cole, and Rich Homie Quan -- debuted on the Billboard 200 and peaked in the Top 15 of both the hip-hop and rap charts. A sequel -- his eighth LP overall -- arrived in 2016. Tha Truth, Pt. 2 featured appearances by B.o.B, Rick Ross, Ty Dolla $ign, Wiz Khalifa, Yo Gotti, Young Thug, and many more. He closed the trilogy in 2017 with Tha Truth, Pt. 3, which was a Billboard Independent chart Top 40.

A month after the release of Pt. 3, Trae's hometown of Houston was hit by Hurricane Harvey. In the aftermath of the devastation wrought by the storm, Trae engaged in relief and rebuilding efforts. After he was given the key to the city, he issued the appropriately titled Hometown Hero, which featured T.I., Mozzy, Young Thug, Boosie Badazz, and others. Three months later, Trae issued 48 Hours Later, a sequel mixtape to his 2016 release Another 48 Hours. His next proper album, Exhale, appeared in August 2019.

His signature sound might be a simple "Yeahhhh Yeahhhhh Yeahhhh" at the end of his lines, but YFN Lucci is a strong, versatile lyricist, one who made his official debut at the age of 17 and has since gone on to become a fixture on the Billboard 200 via albums like Long Live Nut (2017) and Ray Ray from Summerhill (2018).

The Atlanta MC was born Rayshawn Bennett and began rapping when he was 16. A year later, he was recruited by Johnny Cinco for two appearances on 2014's John Popi mixtape. He joined TIG that same year, and by the end of 2014 the label had released his debut mixtape, Wish Me Well. Wish Me Well, Vol. 2 followed in 2016 and featured guest appearances from Migos, Plies, and Johnny Cinco. In April 2017, Lucci released his debut EP, Long Live Nut, which made a strong showing at number 27 on the Billboard 200. He kicked off 2018 with the release of the Meek Mill-featuring "Street Kings." Second EP Freda's Son appeared in February, and full-length Ray Ray from Summerhill dropped the following month, subsequently becoming the rapper's first Top 20-charting release. Later that December, Lucci issued the single "Double Up," which featured Rich the Kid. In 2019, Lucci released the Gangsta Grillz mixtape 650Luc, which included a Trey Songz-assisted single, "All Night Long." Before the end of the year, he returned with the HIStory mixtape. The project included multiple contributions from vocalist Bigga Rankin as well as an appearance from City Girls.

Punjabi-Canadian rapper and producer NAV rides hypnotic trap beats with his wavy sing-rap flow, crafting a sonic blend that draws upon styles similar to contemporaries such as Post Malone, Rae Sremmurd, and Drake. After reaching Canadian and U.S. chart peaks with the mixtapes NAV and the Metro Boomin collaboration Perfect Timing, he issued his official studio debut, Reckless, in 2018. He topped the Candian Albums Chart and the Billboard 200 the next year with Bad Habits.

Born Navraj Goraya in Toronto, he had his first taste of fame when reality TV star Kylie Jenner posted a Snapchat video of herself singing along to his song "Myself." The mysterious star had been steadily building a large following through a string of releases via his SoundCloud account, beginning in 2015 with "Take Me Simple." Along with the Jenner endorsement, NAV accumulated a number of high-profile connections that propelled his career forward. In January 2016, his track "Take Me Simple" was featured on fellow Canadian Drake's OVO Sound Radio on Beats 1, and later that same year he appeared on -- and in the video for -- hip-hop star Travis Scott's single "Beibs in the Trap." With his profile steadily increasing, he signed to XO, the Canadian record label founded by the Weeknd.

NAV's self-titled mixtape appeared in early 2017, and it was chock-full of his by-now-trademark silky vocals and slick beats. The release was preceded by the lead single "Some Way," which also featured the Weeknd. That same year, he also put out the Perfect Timing mixtape, on which he collaborated with Atlanta-based producer Metro Boomin. NAV's single "Wanted You," which featured Lil Uzi Vert, charted on Billboard's Top 100 and he followed up in early 2018 with the solo single "Freshman List." Both tracks were featured on his debut studio album, Reckless, which was released on XO and Republic in May of that year. Landing in the U.S. top ten, the set featured guests Quavo, Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, and Gunna. Less than a year later, Nav made a quick turnaround with sophomore follow-up Bad Habits, which debuted at number one on the Canadian Albums Chart and the Billboard 200. Gunna returned alongside Meek Mill, Young Thug, Lil Durk, and XO label founder the Weeknd.

One of the more versatile commercial artists to surface during the early 2010s, Tory Lanez is a songwriter and producer who flits between and fuses R&B and rap. Alternating vocally between swift and rugged boasts and smooth and sensitive come-ons, he made steady strides toward the mainstream with numerous mixtapes, guest appearances, and self-directed videos. He hit the Top Five of the pop charts in his native Canada and in the U.S. with his debut album, I Told You (the source of the Grammy-nominated single "Luv," 2016), and has been equally successful with the successive full-length projects MEMORIES DONT DIE (2018), Love Me Now (2018), and Chixtape 5 (2019).

Coming on with a style that's both tough and swift, New Orleans rapper Kidd Kidd was associated with two hip-hop empires -- Young Money and G-Unit -- before he even had an official solo release. Born Curtis Steward, Kidd Kidd was a New Orleans street performer until he was signed to the Young Money label by Lil Wayne. He joined Gudda Gudda in the Southern-based Young Money act Squad Up, but in 2004, the group was off the label, although Kidd Kidd would rejoin Young Money in 2008. In 2011, with no solo album released, he left Young Money and joined 50 Cent's label G-Unit. In 2014 he was featured on 50 Cent's album Animal Ambition and joined Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Young Buck, and 50 in G-Unit the group.

Made up of vocalist Jillian Hervey and producer Lucas Goodman, New York-based duo Lion Babe craft a unique version of spacy, evocative R&B. Coining the term "futuristic nostalgia" to describe their sound, they incorporated chopped-up samples, organic instruments, and atmospheric electronics on early singles as well as their 2016 debut full-length Begin.

Lion Babe began when Hervey and Goodman met at a party on the campus of Boston's Northeastern University. Hervey, the daughter of Vanessa Williams, overheard tracks that Goodman, aka Astro Raw, had created and struck up a conversation with him. Soon the two were collaborating on music together, slowly trading ideas and fleshing out beats. Their first song, "Treat Me Like Fire," was uploaded to SoundCloud in November 2012, and they were subsequently snapped up by Polydor in the U.K. Lion Babe resurfaced in December 2014 with a self-titled four-track EP that featured "Treat Me Like Fire," as well as "Jump Hi," a strutting number on which Childish Gambino made an appearance. After a highlight contribution to Disclosure's second album Caracal ("Hour Glass"), as well as a stint opening for that duo on tour, Lion Babe completed Begin, their debut album. It was issued in February 2016 and featured multiple highlights, including the Pharrell Williams-produced "Wonder Woman." For the next few years, the band kept fans sated with a steady stream of new singles and festival appearances. 2017 saw them issuing new songs "Rocket" and "Hit the Ceiling" as well as remix collections for both tracks. The next year they released several new songs including "Honey Dew" and "The Wave" (featuring Leikeli47), and the next year they preceded the release of their second album with single "Western World." The album featured guest spots by Raekwon, Bilal, and the previously released single with Leikeli47, and was released in March of 2019.
