"The Great Gig in the Sky" is the fifth track on The Dark Side of the Moon, the 1973 album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. The song features music by Richard Wright and non-lexical vocals by Clare Torry.

The song began life as a Richard Wright chord progression, known variously as "The Mortality Sequence" or "The Religion Song". During 1972 it was performed live as a simple organ instrumental, accompanied by spoken-word samples from the Bible and snippets of speeches by Malcolm Muggeridge, a British writer known for his conservative religious views. When the band came to record Dark Side in 1973, the lead instrument had been switched to a piano. Various sound effects were tried over the track, including recordings of NASA astronauts communicating on space missions, but none were satisfactory. Finally, a couple of weeks before the album was due to be finished, the band thought of having a female singer "wail" over the music.

As the band began casting around for a singer, album engineer Alan Parsons suggested Clare Torry, a 25-year-old songwriter and session vocalist. Parsons had previously worked with Torry, and had liked her voice on a Top of The Pops covers album. An accountant from Abbey Road Studios contacted Torry and tried to arrange a session for the same evening, but she had other commitments, including tickets to see Chuck Berry that evening, so a session was scheduled for Sunday evening between 7 and 10pm.

The band played the instrumental track for Torry and asked her to improvise a vocal. At first, Torry struggled to divine what the band wanted, but then she was inspired to pretend that she herself was an instrument. She performed two complete takes, the second one more emotional than the first. David Gilmour asked for a third take, but halfway through Torry stopped, feeling she was getting repetitive and had already done the best she could. The final album track was assembled from all three takes. The members of the band were deeply impressed by Torry's performance, but were so reserved in their outward response that she left under the impression that her vocals would never make the final cut. She only became aware they were used when she saw the album at a local record store, spotted her name in the credits and purchased it.

Randy Newman - "The Blues (w. Paul Simon) (TopPop)" [Pop]

The Blues (w. Paul Simon) (TopPop)

"The Blues (w. Paul Simon) (TopPop)" music video by Randy Newman
Added: 06-04-2020

Description : Randy Newman & Paul Simon - The Blues • TopPop

Randall Stuart Newman (born November 28, 1943) is an American singer-songwriter, arranger, and composer known for his Southern-affected singing style, early Americana-influenced songs (often with mordant or satirical lyrics), and various film scores. His best-known songs as a recording artist are "Short People" (1977), "I Love L.A." (1982), and "You've Got a Friend in Me" (1995).

This duet with Paul Simon is from his album 'Trouble In Paradise' from 1983.

This Toppop recording was made 9 January 1983

-

Randy Newman began the slow process of transforming himself into a polished L.A. song-crafter on the album Little Criminals, and with Trouble in Paradise the metamorphosis was complete; by this time, Newman could make a record just as ear-pleasing as anything Paul Simon, Don Henley, or Lindsey Buckingham could come up with, and proved it by persuading all three to appear on the sessions. But no matter how polished the arrangements and smooth the production, Newman's songs don't sound like they're ready for radio, and he's too bright not to understand that songs about apartheid, self-pitying white bluesmen, and arrogant yuppies are poor prospects for the pop charts. Trouble in Paradise marked the high point of Newman's struggle between pop sheen and his satiric impulses, and the album is a significant improvement over Little Criminals and Born Again. The targets of Newman's satirical gaze are easy to skewer, and his pen is hardly subtle, but the overall tone is more respectful than on Born Again and the results are stronger. The bitter Afrikaner in "Christmas in Capetown" and the egocentric blowhard in "My Life Is Good" have at least earned Newman's disgust, and while many of the character studies ("Mikey," "I'm Different") and vignettes ("Miami," "Take Me Back") take a less than charitable view of their protagonists, like the losers and half-wits that populate Good Old Boys, they're human beings whose flaws reveal a hint of tragedy. And the closing number, "Song for the Dead," is a stunner in which a soldier explains to the bodies he's burying the purpose behind the war that took their lives. While too slick for Newman's core audience, Trouble in Paradise was his most intelligent and best realized work since Good Old Boys, and his finest album of the 1980s.

Representing Duval County, Florida emcee Seddy Hendrinx delivers speedy rhymes, atmospheric production, and thick bass with thoughtful introspection and clever samples. Blending melodic Auto-Tuned croons with trap-styled rapping, he balances hard-hitting street tales with introspection that zones in on pain and darker emotions. Emerging in the late 2010s, he delivered his debut effort, Death B4 Dishonor Loyalty Over Everything, in 2018.

Hailing from Jacksonville, Hendrinx took his name from both Jimi Hendrix and Atlanta trap rapper Future, who sometimes goes by Future Hendrix. Inserting himself into that lineage, Hendrinx kicked off his career with a relatively late start in the game. He began freestyling in high school, impressing friends who urged him to post videos of his raps online. These clips gained traction and word spread, expanding his local audience. Early singles such as 2017's "Fell in Love" and 2018's "Emotional" were followed by his hard-hitting debut, Death B4 Dishonor Loyalty Over Everything, which featured the underground favorite "Safe." The following year, he released the single "Lowkey," which interpolated SWV's "Weak in the Knees."

Coventry, England's Holy Goof produces and spins an exuberant, adrenaline-spiked mix of bassline house, garage, grime, and other styles of bass-heavy British dance music. As a youth, he was raised on hip-hop, and eventually became enraptured by the hard yet funky side of the U.K. dance scene. During his teenage years, he balanced music production and DJ'ing with his championship-winning amateur boxing hobby, even selling his music equipment and turntables at one point. Eventually he quit boxing, however, and resumed his music career, making appropriately punchy tracks with fast, galloping beats and heavy bass drops. Several EPs appeared on labels such as Certified Bangers and Party Like Us Records in 2015, and Holy Goof's tunes gained support from top bassline/garage DJs such as Flava D and Royal T. In 2016, he played in London for the first time, and several high-profile gigs following, including appearances at Boiler Room and Brixton Academy. "Push It," a collaboration with U.K. bass legend DJ Zinc, appeared on Bingo Bass in 2017, and Holy Goof began releasing tracks on his own HGMusic. Having previously appeared on Fabriclive mixes by My Nu Leng and Flava D, Holy Goof mixed Fabriclive 97, which was released in March of 2018.

Formed in 2000 by Josh Middleton (lead guitar) and Carl Parnell (bass), they initially recruited school friends Glen Chamberlain (vocals), Gurneet Ahluwalia (rhythm guitar), and Jay Colios-Terry (drums), but as they approached their debut EP, 2006's Casting Shadows, they had undergone multiple lineup changes, recording the release with Ben Hollyer on vocals. A second EP, The Supreme Oppressor, followed in 2007, both released on independent label In the Deep Records. Jamie Graham stepped in for vocal duties around the same time they were signed to Nuclear Blast. Now on a significantly larger label, they geared up for the release of their debut album, 2008's Conclusion of an Age; directly after it was released, they recruited Viatrophy guitarist Alex Bailey on rhythm guitar. They undertook a massive European tour in 2009 alongside the Black Dahlia Murder, Cephalic Carnage, and Psycroptic, with Middleton taking on vocal duties. The next few years were some of the most stable in the band's history, with two further albums, 2011's Edge of the Earth and 2012's Monolith, capped by a European tour in support of Killswitch Engage in 2013. Unfortunately, it was toward the end of the tour that tragedy struck, as the band were involved in a serious RV accident that injured everyone, resulting in canceled shows and an extended recovery period. They returned in 2015 with Ali Richardson on drums, and he was featured on their fourth album, Dormant Heart, later the same year. Middleton's good friend Tom Searle passed away in 2016, and Middleton took on his role as lead guitarist of Architects in commemoration. Sylosis went on hiatus to make way for a year of touring with Architects. Middleton decided to stay on indefinitely but stated that it didn't mean the end for Sylosis. Although remaining quiet for a few years, Middleton was true to his word, as Sylosis resurfaced in 2019 to begin work on a fifth album, albeit without Parnell, who was replaced by Conor Marshall. Cycle of Suffering was released in early 2020.

A collaboration between producer and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Quesada and singer/songwriter Eric Burton, Black Pumas fuse cinematic neo-soul, light psychedelia, and a touch of urban grit. Rising from their studio origins to become a hard-hitting live act, the group released their debut album in 2019.

Through a mutual friend, Quesada -- a Grammy-winning Austin-based producer known for his work with Grupo Fantasma and Brownout -- connected with Burton, who'd been making the rounds in Austin's singer/songwriter scene since busking his way from Los Angeles in 2015. Burton's dynamic and soulful vocals were a perfect match for the retro-funk- and R&B-flavored tracks Quesada had been working on, and the two joined forces in 2018 as Black Pumas. Working out their material both in the studio and on-stage during a weekly residency at Austin's C-Boys Heart & Soul Bar, they signed a deal with ATO Records and released a pair of singles, "Black Moon Rising" and "Fire" in early 2019. Their acclaimed debut LP followed in June of that year and helped to earn the duo a Grammy nomination for best new artist.

The Mountain Goats - "Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert (From The Archives)" [Live In Concert]

Description : The Mountain Goats: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert From The Archives

Stephen Thompson | January 3, 2010

The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle keeps getting quieter, as his raw early bedroom recordings and bare-knuckle anthems continue to make way for polished ballads that whisper, seethe and mourn. The recent The Life of the World to Come at first feels strangely timid, but as its crushingly sad words sink in ("I am a flightless bird / There'll be no more after me," and so on), it hits slowly but deeply — less a punch than a gnawing ache.

In person, Darnielle's twitchy, nervous energy serves his fearless songwriting well: He exudes gentility and good humor in conversation, but his performances are utterly committed, with intensity that infuses his screams and whispers alike. In this solo Tiny Desk Concert, his four songs fit nearly into distinct categories: new and quiet ("Hebrews 11:40"), new and loud ("Psalms 40:2"), old and quiet ("Color in Your Cheeks," from All Hail West Texas), and old and loud ("Going to Georgia," from Zopilote Machine). It's no surprise that all four approaches serve him well.

Also, it should be noted that Darnielle drew a large and admiring crowd for this show, even though it appears in the video that it was attended exclusively by a photographer and the giant blond head of Lars Gotrich. Trust me: We wouldn't have missed this one for anything.

Set List
"Color in Your Cheeks"
"Hebrews 11:40"
"Psalms 40:2"
"Going to Georgia"

Though the bulk of death metal deals with some pretty grisly subject matter, few bands match their contempt for society with their sound as well as Fit for an Autopsy. Purveyors of savage deathcore, the band's "music" pairs lyrical misanthropy with pure sonic destruction, creating an assault on both the senses and sensibilities of listeners. Emerging in the early 2010s, the band hit their stride in 2015 with the release of their acclaimed third full-length effort, Absolute Hope Absolute Hell, and continued to push the boundaries of deathcore on subsequent outings like The Great Collapse (2017) and The Sea of Tragic Beasts (2019).

An alt/classic rock supergroup, Them Crooked Vultures feature Queens of the Stone Age's guitarist and vocalist Josh Homme, Nirvana/Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl on drums, and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones on bass. The trio first discussed collaborating in 2005, but not much more was heard of the project until summer 2009, when Them Crooked Vultures announced that they had been recording an album in Los Angeles. The band made its live debut at Chicago's Cabaret Metro after that year's Lollapalooza Festival closed, adding auxiliary Vulture and longtime Homme collaborator Alain Johannes on rhythm guitar and keyboards. The show's set list was made up of grungy, hard-hitting rock with prog rock leanings, including the song "Nobody Loves Me and Neither Do I," which the band posted a brief clip of on its YouTube channel the week after its inaugural gig. The band spent the rest of the summer on the festival circuit, then issued its self-titled debut that fall.
