While in prison on robbery charges, New York rapper Lil Tjay found the motivation to get through his sentence by writing lyrics. Upon his release in 2017, Tjay, still just a teenager, began recording his songs and posting them online. Almost overnight, several tracks took off and were being streamed in the millions, gaining the rapper massive attention for his often-downcast songs that combined vocal hooks and rhymes about hardship written while he was in jail.

Lil Tjay's first tracks showed up online at the very end of 2017. "Resume" was his first completely solo song and it went viral quickly, ultimately being streamed over 14 million times in a little over a year. He followed with multiple one-off tracks over the course of 2018, with many of them selling/streaming by the millions. Self-released tracks like "Brothers," "Goat," "None of Your Love," and "Leaked" all gained serious traction and quickly drew the attention of major labels hoping to sign the rapper. He inked a deal with Columbia, and the label released the five-song EP No Comparison at the tail end of 2018. A second EP, F.N, arrived in August 2019 and included the singles "Ruthless" featuring Jay Critch and "Laneswitch."

A forthright lyricist and understated vocalist who has singled out the likes of Minnie Riperton and Mýa as two of her many inspirations, Ari Lennox has been the one-artist R&B contingent of J. Cole's Dreamville roster since 2015. The singer and songwriter made her commercial Dreamville debut in 2016 with the Pho EP and followed up in 2019 with her first album, Shea Butter Baby, which hit the Billboard 200 chart at number 104.

Originally from Washington, D.C., Ari Lennox (born Courtney Shanade Salter) made her first moves during the first half of the 2010s with the Five Finger Discount mixtape, the Ariography EP, and tracks such as "Bound," all of which she uploaded from 2012 through 2014. In 2015, she began an alliance with J. Cole's Interscope-affiliated Dreamville label through a featured appearance on Omen's "Sweat It Out" and a showcase on the Revenge of the Dreamers II compilation standout "Backseat." The next October, Dreamville issued Lennox's Pho, an EP that entered Billboard's R&B/hip-hop chart at number 40, led by the Hollywood JB collaboration "Night Drive." She contributed background vocals to Cole's chart-topping 4 Your Eyez Only and opened for Cole during the rapper's extensive 2017 tour in support of the album. Throughout 2018, Lennox was featured on cuts by labelmates Bas and Masego, released a handful of stray tracks, and appeared beside Cole on the Mike WiLL Made It-produced Creed II soundtrack. That song, "Shea Butter Baby," became the title track of Lennox's first album. Released in May 2019, Shea Butter Baby reached number 104 on the Billboard 200. Around the same time, "Shea Butter Baby" itself registered on the Adult R&B Songs chart.

Enigmatic indie R&B singer Allan Rayman has managed to keep a shadowy profile during his brief music career. After casually dropping a strangely alluring self-released LP called Hotel Allan in 2015, the Lost Springs, Wyoming native racked up an impressive amount of plays, thanks largely to word of mouth and a series of mysterious videos that play like short films. Based out of Toronto, Rayman maintained his cryptic presence on-stage as well, singing soulfully to either pre-recorded tracks or minimal instrumentation, then sitting at a small on-stage table sipping a drink between songs while eerie pre-recorded messages play over the P.A. In spite of his low profile, Rayman built a loyal following who eagerly received his second missive, Roadhouse 01, a similarly strange mix of R&B, soul, hip-hop, and folk that chronicles an alter ego called Mr. Roadhouse. It was released in early 2017 on Mumford & Sons member Ben Lovett's Communion Records. In 2018, he picked up a Juno Award nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. A full-length, Harry Hard-On, appeared later that year followed in 2019 by the single "Stitch."

Calboy - Dope Boy (Vevo Ctrl)

Another week, another dope Chicago rapper in the Ctrl box. Today we got Calvin Woods, aka Calboy. We rocked with him back in the summer, when he showcased “Envy Me,” the track that brought him to fans' attention. In essence, that song relies on a contrast between good and bad, right choices and wrong turns. As the story goes, the day he was in the studio, drill producer JTK served him the beat. The drowsy 25-second intro (“Now I lay me down to sleep/I pray the lord my soul to keep,” he mumbles) gives away to a young man bursting with the need to get some stuff off his chest. You could say Cal’s success is simply the product of someone on their grind finally seeing the pay off. The new ‘Long Live The Kings’ EP' is jam packed with bangers, like "Dope Boy," which just got the official vid treatment. Dive in, and let the kid from the 147 take you to his side of life.

Shawn Hook began his musical journey at a very young age, learning piano, bass, and trombone, singing in a choir, and enrolling in music composition class in high school. Born Shawn Hlookoff in South Slocan, British Columbia, he started college as a geological engineering major before committing full-time to music. He transferred to the Art Institute in Vancouver, studying audio engineering and playing in a disco cover band called Shag. Hook released a pair of albums under his birth name in 2004 and 2006, while his music was featured on various television shows like The Hills and Bones. At that time, his sound was organic and guitar-based, showing off a more relaxed acoustic vibe. He scored a modest hit with the heartbreaking ode "Soldier," which went on to become an unofficial Canadian anthem played on Remembrance Day. However, by 2012, his sound had morphed into a more pop-oriented vision, incorporating his wide array of musical influences. His debut as Shawn Hook was 2012's Cosmonaut & the Girl (Kreative Soul Entertainment/EMI Canada). In 2015, as his American exposure increased, he signed with Hollywood Records. His second album, Analog Love (Universal Music Canada) was released in June 2015, with a shortened EP-length version released in the United States that year as well. His strong falsetto was paired with new electronic-inspired indie pop songs, with elements of R&B, soul, and disco peppered throughout, recalling the breezy, melodic sounds of Maroon 5, Fitz & the Tantrums, and even Enrique Iglesias. In 2017, Hook teamed with Vanessa Hudgens for the brooding single "Reminding Me."

Originally from Canton, Ohio, rapper Trippie Redd emerged in 2015 with a series of online tracks that hinted at the versatile style he came to develop, one that blended elements of cloud rap, emo rap, and trap influenced by T-Pain, Gucci Mane, and Lil Wayne with the energy of punk and metal inspired by Kiss and Marilyn Manson.

He soon relocated from Ohio to Atlanta as his fame grew. A Love Letter to You 2 followed, and debuted in the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 albums chart. That same month, Trippie joined with Lil Wop for the EP Angels & Demons. Before the end of the year, he scored his first Hot 100 entry with the Travis Scott-assisted single "Dark Knight Dummo."

In 2018, Trippie Redd issued several singles in anticipation of his debut studio album, Life's a Trip. The LP placed the artist's voice at the center of many songs, highlighting his unique vocal style as both a rapper and singer, and became the first in a series of Top Ten Billboard 200 hits. Just a few months later, he returned with the mixtape A Love Letter to You 3, another chapter of depressive and angsty lyrics on both sung and rapped tracks. His second studio album, !, arrived in 2019 and immediately topped the Billboard 200. Its title was inspired by the album ? by the late rapper XXXTentacion and continued Trippie's emo rap musings.

Bringing the spirit of Death Row Records to the 2010s, Sacramento MC Mozzy spits gritty rhymes with ominous productions. Born Timothy Patterson, he began rapping in 2004 under the name Lil Tim, releasing the "U Ain't Ready Like Dat" single in 2010. A name change came in 2011 when he issued the album Money Means Mozzy, which was followed by his 2013 mixtape The Tonite Show, hosted by DJ Fresh. Four mixtapes dropped in 2014, including Free Mozzy, which was issued while the MC was locked up on illegal firearm charges. Gangland landed in 2015 along with Yellow Tape Activities, and 2016 saw the Empire label issue both Beautiful Struggle and Mandatory Check. That same year, he contributed to a slew of collaborations with artists like Dutch Santana, E Mozzy, Juneonnabeat, and Philthy Rich. He followed in early 2017 with Fake Famous, which featured appearances by Iamsu!, E Mozzy, Cellyru, YFN Lucci, YG, G-Eazy, Jadakiss, and many more. After issuing the collaborative Can't Fake the Real with Blac Youngsta and Dreadlocks & Headshots with Gunplay, Mozzy released 1 Up Top Ahk, which debuted in the Top 100 on the Billboard main album chart in the summer of 2017. After appearing on the chart-topping soundtrack to the film Black Panther, Mozzy issued "Nobody Knows" with Jay Rock and DCMBR. A prolific 2018 included the Spiritual Conversations EP, as well as full-length Gangland Landlord. That year, he also joined Kae One for the collaborative set, Run It Up Activities (Team Player Records), which also featured the Jacka, Philthy Rich, and E Mozzy. In early 2019, Mozzy and Berner teamed up for the collaborative mixtape Slimey Individualz, which Mozzy followed up in May with the heartfelt "Legal Guardian/Guardian Angel," a track that paid homage to his grandmother.

Based in Denver, Colorado, Nathaniel Rateliff is a striking, emotive tenor vocalist and songwriter whose work runs the gamut from simple folk and Americana to roots rock & roll and vintage rhythm & blues. Although he earned critical acclaim for his quieter, more introspective folk-based albums, he broke out commercially in 2015 with the release of Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, the eponymous debut from his high-energy and soulful live band. Signed to the legendary Stax label, the band spent the next four years enjoying a high public profile, releasing a live album and studio follow-up before Rateliff returned to solo work with the reflective 2020 album, And It's Still Alright.

Kandace Springs' refined mix of R&B, jazz, and pop has been showcased with Soul Eyes (2016) and Indigo (2018), albums the singer, songwriter, and keyboardist has released on Blue Note. The Nashville native's path to the revered label begins with her father, session vocalist Scat Springs, who introduced her to the piano and classic recordings by artists including Nina Simone and Luther Vandross. At the age of 15, the younger Springs recorded a demo with her father, who delivered the result to veteran producers Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken (Stephanie Mills, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna). Through the duo's support, Springs secured an audition for Blue Note president Don Was and landed a deal. The artist debuted in September 2014 -- two months after Prince flew her to Minneapolis to perform at Paisley Park -- with a self-titled EP created with the likes of Rogers, Sturken, and Pop & Oak. After she made featured appearances on tracks by Ghostface Killah, Aqualung, and Black Violin, Springs completed her first full-length, Soul Eyes. Released in June 2016 with production from Larry Klein, the album mixed originals and covers and favored lean instrumentation. For her comparatively layered follow-up, Springs worked extensively with Karriem Riggins and maintained her connection with Rogers and Sturken as two of her primary co-writers. Issued in September 2018, Indigo likewise featured interpretations of classic and contemporary songs, from Thom Bell and Linda Creed's "People Make the World Go Round" (popularized by the Stylistics) to Gabriel Garzón-Montano's "6 8."

BABY23 Album SOON

-

Growing up in a small Southern town, rapper JayDaYoungan rose to fame on sheer talent alone, gaining the attention of millions of fans through his viral videos and uniquely delivered tracks. Early songs followed in the footsteps of influential Southern rappers who came before him, but as he continued to release music prolifically, his style diversified somewhat, as with the R&B-tinged 2018 single "Interstate" and more melodic tracks on mixtapes like Forever 23.

JayDaYoungan was born Javarious Scott in 1998 in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Growing up surrounded by the influence of Louisiana hip-hop legends like Lil Wayne, Kevin Gates, and Lil Boosie, JayDaYoungan got into music at an early age and released his first mixtape, Ruffwayy, in early 2017 when he was 18. He quickly garnered buzz for stand-out songs like "Spinning" and "Taking Off" and gained an enormous social media following in the span of a few months. A quick succession of mixtapes followed, with The Real Jumpman23 arriving in 2017 and Wake Up and Taking Off following the next year. Never slowing down, JayDaYoungan released the somewhat R&B-tinged single "Interstate" in February of 2018; the song and accompanying video quickly racked up millions of views and streams online. 2018 would be a huge year for JayDaYoungan, who released two more mixtapes before year's end, 23 and the Billboard-charting Forever 23. Forever 23 spawned the single "Thot Thot," which was among his most popular to date, racking up millions of streams and video views. Along with this constant output of new music of his own, he also collaborated on tracks with peers like Youngeen Ace, Glitchman, and FG Famous, among many others. Before the year was over, he released the single "No Play Zone" in late December. His next two mixtapes, Endless Pain and Misunderstood, saw release in 2019: both debuted even higher in the charts than Forever 23, and yielded several more viral singles.

A long-tenured melodic death metal act from Finland, Omnium Gatherum paid their formative dues in the late '90s before earning their place in the European metal community with a series of respected albums in the mid-2000s for labels like Nuclear Blast and Rage of Achilles. Already headed in a more progressive direction, the band worked with Swedish producer Dan Swanö on 2008's The Redshift, igniting a hard-won breakout phase that would culminate with 2011's career highlight, New World Shadows. Over the next several years, the band deepened their collaboration with Swanö, settling in for a fruitful tenure with Century Media Group that yielded albums like 2016's Grey Heavens and 2018's The Burning Cold.

Lodger is the 13th studio album by English singer-songwriter David Bowie. It was originally released in May 1979 by RCA Records. The third and final release of the Berlin Trilogy, following Low and "Heroes" (both 1977), it was recorded in Switzerland and New York City with collaborator Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti. Unlike Bowie's previous two albums, Lodger contained no instrumentals and a somewhat more pop-oriented style while experimenting with elements of world music and recording techniques inspired by Eno's Oblique Strategies cards

A Switzerland-based hard rock act formed in 1997, Shakra went through a number of lineup changes (including a vocalist change when the bands' momentum was just gaining attention) but managed to persevere and keep going for over two decades. Their first album, 1998's Shakra, and its follow-up, 1999's Moving Force, were strong enough to earn them support slots touring with bands like Great White and Uriah Heep. Real progress was being made with their third album, Power Ride (2001), but unfortunately a health situation forced the departure of vocalist Pete Wiedmer. Mark Fox stepped in to fill the frontman role, and the band recorded and released Rising in 2003. The band was a hit on German and Swiss charts, and toured extensively in support of their work. After many live shows and tours with Hammerfall and Stratovarius, Shakra released Infected in 2007, followed by Everest in 2009, and Back on Track in 2011. Powerplay arrived in 2013, with High Noon and Snakes & Ladders dropping in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

out May 29

"Thousand Tears" features the incomparable voice of Noora of Battle Beast, refining the most touching metal ballad of the year in a duet with Chris Boltendahl! An unforgetable moment of Grave Digger 's apart from that heavy new album Fields Of Blood, and escapes the listener into a melancholic dream, sweetened with a high class vocal melange and an outstanding instrumental arrangement.

Says Grave Digger frontman, Chris Boltendahl:
"With Thousand Tears we pay homage to the unforgettable Queen of Scotland Mary Staurt ... Noora from Battle Beast gives Queen Mary an incredible, warm and fragile atmosphere through her voice which at the end of the song turns into pure anger and despair. We couldn't have found a better voice for this song. We are proud to present THOUSAND TEARS feat. NOORA LOUHIMO. One of the best ballads Grave Digger has ever written, maybe the best of our entire career."

Noora adds: "It’s an honour to do a collaboration with the legendary Grave Digger and I’m very intrigued about the Scottish themed songs they’ve done. Now I will also be part of their historical song ”Thousand Tears” as the voice of Queen Mary. I hope all listeners can hear the big emotions and get a little climpse of her story as one of most Powerful woman that lived in her time."

A French heavy metal outfit that dabbled in blackened death metal before going full-on deathgrind, Benighted emerged in the late 1990s with a crew that was culled from some of the region's most insidious noisemakers: Dishumanized, Darkness Fire, and Osgiliath. After snapping necks with their 2000 debut, the group went on to issue a string of influential grindcore/death metal albums like Insane Cephalic Production (2004), Icon (2007), Asylum Cave (2011), and Necrobreed (2018), all the while forging new paths of sonic brutality and lyrical depravity.

Formed in Saint-Étienne around the talents of vocalist Julien Truchan, guitarists Liem N'Guyen and Olivier Gabriel, drummer Fred Fayolle, and bassist Chart, Benighted's combustive blend of black metal and grindcore was introduced on their eponymous debut in 2000. The album caught the attention of Adipocere Records, who signed the group the following year. Moving toward a more technical, less blackened form of death metal, the band issued the punishing Psychose in 2002. Chart departed shortly thereafter, making way for new touring bassist Remy Aubrespin. More lineup changes heralded the arrival of 2004's uncompromising Insane Cephalic Production, with Eric Lombard taking over for Aubrespin. The LP was produced by Kristian Kohlmannslehner, who would helm all of the band's session from then on. The ensuing two years were spent relentlessly touring in support of the album, appearing alongside a slew of high-profile metal acts like Morbid Angel, Deicide, Fear Factory, Slipknot, and Soulfly. Implementing elements of thrash, groove metal, and hardcore, the band released Identisick in 2006. Longtime drummer Fayolle was the next to leave the fold, and was replaced by new kit man Kevin Foley, who made his studio debut on 2007's hard-hitting Icon. In 2009 Benighted inked a deal with Season of Mist, and their first outing for the popular French indie, Asylum Cave, followed in 2011. The punishing Carnivore Sublime dropped in 2014, with Necrobreed, the band's eighth studio long player, arriving in 2017.

A Los Angeles, California-based folk-rock artist with a dreamy and hook-filled indie pop heart, Phoebe Bridgers' evocative lyrics and commanding voice have drawn comparisons to artists like Julien Baker, Conor Oberst, and Julia Jacklin. A graduate of the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Bridgers released her debut 7", "Killer," in 2015 via Ryan Adams' Pax AM label. A trio of buzzworthy singles, "Smoke Signals," "Funeral," and "Motion Sickness," appeared in early 2017 in anticipation of the release of her Dead Oceans-issued debut LP, Stranger in the Alps, which arrived later that September. In 2018, Bridgers garnered even more widespread acclaim with the release of the Boygenius EP, a collaborative effort with fellow indie songwriters Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus.
