One of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation, Brad Mehldau is a virtuoso performer with an ear for deeply nuanced, harmonically sophisticated acoustic jazz. While Mehldau is one of the more absorbing and thoughtful practitioners within that idiom, he is also receptive to the idea of using material from the rock era (Paul McCartney's "Blackbird," for example). Though Mehldau's training is primarily classical, his interest in jazz began early and he has subsequently utilized both forms throughout his career. This is as evident on his first Art of the Trio volume (of five) as it is on 2006's House on Hill and 2010's Day Is Done, on which both originals and covers of popular music standards -- from Radiohead to Nick Drake to Paul Simon -- reflect that his playing and compositional style owes as much to the 20th century classical impressionism of Claude Debussy as it does Bill Evans. While he delivers classically oriented recordings on his own and with singers Renée Fleming and Anne Sofie von Otter, he has also issued cross-pollinated explorations of J.S. Bach's classical pieces on After Bach, while concurrently expanding the depth and breadth of the jazz piano tradition on Ode and Seymour Reads the Constitution.

Able to effortlessly transition from a verse filled with hardcore rap to a hooky pop chorus, rapper/singer Becky G worked alongside artists like Cody Simpson and Ke$ha before breaking out with a solo career.

Born and raised in Inglewood, California, Rebbeca Marie Gomez became Becky G in 2011 when she uploaded cover versions of Kanye West and Jay-Z's "Otis" and Frank Ocean's "Novacane" to video-sharing services. The year 2012 saw her release the mixtape @itsbeckygomez and join Cody Simpson on his single "Wish U Were Here." By the end of the year, she'd appeared on the remix of Ke$ha's single "Die Young," while her own single, "Becky from the Block," landed in 2013 alongside her EP Play It Again. Her 2014 single "Shower" cracked the Top 20 in the U.S., while 2015 saw her premiere the Dr. Luke-produced track "Lovin' So Hard" at the Radio Disney Awards.

In 2017, Becky G's career got a boost when she appeared in the feature film Power Rangers playing Trini, the yellow Power Ranger. In July of that year, she scored a major Latin chart hit with "Mayores," a collaboration with Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny. She returned to English in July 2018 with "Zooted," featuring French Montana and Farruko. She was also featured on on Kane Brown's song "Lost in the Middle of Nowhere." More tracks followed in 2019 including "LBD," "Green Light," and "Banana" with Anitta. G also paired with Maluma for the song "La Respuesta."

Yungblud is the hip-hop-influenced rock outfit created by musician Dominic Harrison. Blending punk spirit with pop savvy, he made a steady climb in the late 2010s before scoring a trio of hits with Halsey, Machine Gun Kelly, Dan Reynolds, and frequent collaborator, Travis Barker. While his full-length debut, 21st Century Liability, landed in 2018, he made his mainstream breakthrough a year later with his EP, The Underrated Youth.
Born in Yorkshire, England, the singer/songwriter was raised in a musical family. His father was a vintage guitar dealer and his grandfather played with T. Rex. Influenced by Bob Dylan, the Clash, and the Beatles, he played guitar and sang from a young age. In 2017, when he was 19, he issued his debut single, "King Charles," a genre-blending protest song that fell somewhere between early Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T, and Rat Boy. He followed with the song "I Love You, Will You Marry Me," which incorporated some dub and grime elements. A major-label deal with Geffen yielded Yungblud's first collection, an eponymous 2018 EP that included his first two singles alongside three new tracks. His debut full-length, 21st Century Liability, appeared in May of that year and made a solid chart showing in Australia and Belgium. Yungblud returned in the early part of 2019 with "Parents," "Loner," and "11 Minutes," the latter of which was a collaboration with Halsey and Travis Barker. Later that year, another track with Barker helped push Yungblud higher up the U.S. Rock chart, this time with rapper Machine Gun Kelly on the raucous "I Think I'm Okay." Primed by these chart placements, he scored his first spot on the Billboard 200 at the end of the year with his third EP, The Underrated Youth, which included his third Top 10 single on the U.S. Rock chart, "Original Me," featuring Imagine Dragons' Dan Reynolds.

Earning his nickname with a life of crime that landed him a two-year stint in jail, Atlanta MC Trouble had just signed a recording contract when he was caught in a home invasion that ended in kidnapping and armed-robbery charges. The contract was with Duct Tape Entertainment, and Trouble (born Mariel Semonte Orr in Atlanta, Georgia) was working in the studio with label boss Big Bank Black the day the home invasion went down. He served his sentence until December 17, 2010, and a year later, he used that date as the title of his debut mixtape. In 2014, his album All on Me was released on that very same day. It marked the start of a prolific run for Trouble as he channeled his creative energy into a deluge of mixtapes including #ZayDidIt (2015), Skoob Fresh (2015), Skoobzilla (2016), and Year in 2016 (2017). His 2016 collaboration with fellow Atlanta rapper YFN Lucci, the single "Key to the Streets," reached number 70 on Billboard's Hot 100. In 2018, Trouble signed with Ear Drummer Records, issuing "Bring It Back" with Drake and Mike WiLL Made-It and another Mike WiLL single, "Real Is Rare."

A Moroccan-American rapper who built an indie empire with his Cocaine City imprint, French Montana rose from the New York underground in the 2000s to emerge as a pop savvy hip-hop artist in the 2010s. Starting with debut LP Excuse My French, he became known for his high-profile collaborations and a handful of chart hits including "Unforgettable" from his 2017 sophomore release, Jungle Rules.

In 2018, Montana joined with Diplo, Lil Pump, and Zhavia Ward for the bombastic single "Welcome to the Party" from the Deadpool 2 soundtrack, which returned him to the Hot 100. Additional singles -- "No Stylist" with Drake and "Slide" with Blueface and Lil Tjay -- were also chart hits, carrying Montana into 2019. Those latter tracks later landed on his third effort, which was issued toward the end of the year on the same day he was released from hospitalization in the ICU. A double-album, Montana, boasted an impressive cast of guests, including Juicy J ("50's & 100's"), Swae Lee (on the "Unforgettable" sequel "Out of Your Mind"), and Post Malone and Cardi B ("Writing on the Wall"). Upon release, the LP debuted at number 25 on the Billboard 200.

SYML is the moodier solo venture of Barcelona frontman and Seattle native Brian Fennell. As SYML, Fennell is more textural and sensory than Barcelona's piano rock, framing his quiet, introspective songwriting in low-key synth-augmented soundscapes with austere piano parts and spectral vocals. Debuting in 2016 with the Hurt for Me EP, SYML found success with song placements in a number of high-profile television shows like Elementary, Scream, and Teen Wolf. Subsequent singles "The War" and "Mr. Sandman," a surprisingly dour cover of the 1950s doo wop chestnut, found SYML exploring heavy and ominous themes, though his 2017 follow-up, "Where's My Love," was an altogether more buoyant, folk-inspired track. "Where's My Love" proved to be a hit for SYML and over the next year, it was rolled out in a variety of different forms including an acoustic version, a solo piano version, a Sam Feldt electronic remix, and a duet with Lily Kershaw. The original mix appeared on SYML's 2018 EP, In My Body. In 2019, Fennell issued his eponymous full-length debut SYML.

One of the more versatile commercial artists to surface during the early 2010s, Tory Lanez is a songwriter and producer who flits between and fuses R&B and rap. Alternating vocally between swift and rugged boasts and smooth and sensitive come-ons, he made steady strides toward the mainstream with numerous mixtapes, guest appearances, and self-directed videos. He hit the Top Five of the pop charts in his native Canada and in the U.S. with his debut album, I Told You (the source of the Grammy-nominated single "Luv," 2016), and has been equally successful with the successive full-length projects MEMORIES DONT DIE (2018), Love Me Now (2018), and Chixtape 5 (2019).
