A suburban Chicago-based metalcore unit that incorporates elements of djent and deathcore into their punishing sonic assault, Veil of Maya released their first album, All Things Set Aside, in 2006, after signing to Corrosive. The band spent the lion's share of the next two years promoting their debut through the age-old classic ritual of constant regional and national touring. Eventually they were able to get a bit of time to record some new work, and in 2008 released album number two, The Common Man's Collapse. Signed to Sumerian, the group embarked on further touring, playing with like-minded decibel pushers Arsis, A Life Once Lost, and labelmates Born of Osiris. 2010 saw the release of their third studio long-player, ID, followed in 2012 by the savage and condensed Eclipse, the latter of which clocked in at just over 28 minutes. In January 2015, the band dropped the single "Phoenix" in anticipation of the release of the full-length Matriarch, which arrived later that May. A pair of vicious singles, "Overthrow" and "Doublespeak," heralded the release of the group's sixth LP, 2017's False Idol.

Mahan Esfahani - "Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" [Classical, Live In Concert]

Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

"Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" music video by Mahan Esfahani

Description : Mahan Esfahani: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

April 28, 2020 | Tom Huizenga -- The harpsichord is a beautiful but notoriously fussy instrument. After we wheeled one behind Bob Boilen's desk, it took the bulk of an hour to get the tuning just perfect for the very first Tiny Desk harpsichord recital. Given that our guest was Mahan Esfahani, the instrument's most ardent advocate, we were willing to wait.

Esfahani, who grew up near Washington, D.C., but is now based in Prague, chose a double manual harpsichord — meaning two keyboards. This one was built by specialists Barbara and Thomas Wolf in 1991, but is based on a famous French instrument from 1770.

The carefully selected repertoire began with classics: a pair of sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, which share the same key but couldn't be more opposite in personality. With elaborate curlicue ornaments in both hands, the opening sonata presents a sober, regal outlook. Its partner is a flamboyant rocker, with the hands chasing each other across the two keyboards like a cat and mouse.

Esfahani made sure to also include a modern piece. Mel Powell's angular and slightly jazzy "Recitative and Toccata Percossa," from 1951, is a tour de force in this artist's hands. It drives home a point he likes to make — that while the harpsichord had its heyday in the 18th century, it's still a vibrant instrument and very much alive. "There are over 50 modern concertos for the harpsichord," he told the audience.

Returning to the baroque, Esfahani closed with a little-known chaconne by Johann Pachelbel. Its steady bassline and colorful variations were a pleasant reminder of the composer's one-hit claim to fame, "Pachelbel's Canon." Although the music stopped there, Esfahani's performance continued as he stayed for a while behind the desk, happily regaling the harpsichord-curious on the finer points of the instrument.

SET LIST
Domenico Scarlatti: "Sonata in D, K. 534"
Domenico Scarlatti: "Sonata in D, K. 535"
Mel Powell: "Recitative and Toccata Percossa"
Johann Pachelbel: "Chaconne"

Harpsichordist and organist Mahan Esfahani was raised in Tehran, and he received his earliest musical training from his father. He pursued musicology and history at Stanford University, and George Houle, Heather Hadlock, Elaine Thornburgh, Herbert Myers, and Adam Gilbert were among his teachers. He continued his postgraduate studies in harpsichord with Peter Watchorn, Lorenzo Ghielmi, and Zuzana Ruzicková. From 2008 to 2010, Esfahani was artist-in-residence at New College, Oxford, as well as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. His debuts at Wigmore Hall, the BBC Proms, and New York's Frick Collection brought him international attention. He launched his recording career with Hyperion, performing Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Wurttemburg Sonatas and the complete keyboard music of Jean-Philippe Rameau. In 2014, he signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, and in 2015 he began teaching harpsichord at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. That same year, he was named Newcomer of the Year by BBC Music Magazine.

Dublin, Ireland-based modern rock quartet Kodaline specialize in soaring, radio-ready guitar rock that's drawn comparisons to Coldplay, Keane, U2, and Oasis. Formed in the working-class town of Swords around the talents of Steve Garrigan, Vinnie May, Jr., Jason Boland, and Mark Prendergast, the band released an eponymous EP in 2012, with plans to unleash a full-length outing the following year. At the end of 2012, the band was shortlisted for the BBC's Sound of 2013, but was beaten to the top spot by HAIM. Kodaline released their debut album, In a Perfect World, in June 2013, which was preceded by the singles High Hopes and Love Like This. The album was a major success in Ireland, going platinum twice, and it also did well in Britain (it peaked at three and went gold) as well as portions of Europe. Kodaline's second album, Coming Up for Air, followed in early 2015. The album peaked at number four on the U.K. charts and spawned the singles "The One" and "Honest." In the summer of 2017, the band returned with the single "Brother" and the I Wouldn't Be EP. The next year, they issued the single "Follow Your Fire," which landed on their pop-leaning third full-length, Politics of Living.

Dan Bejar started Destroyer as a solo project in Vancouver in 1995. His first album, We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge, was an electric folk record, setting the stage for the early Bowie comparisons that were certain to follow his particular vocal style. In 1998, Bejar added a rhythm section and took it into the studio for the first time. The resulting recording, City of Daughters, was a sparsely produced collection of catchy pop songs in which Bejar's increasingly obtuse lyrics really started to stand out. Thief, again recorded in Vancouver, was released in 2000, but by then the lineup had expanded into a quintet. The sparse production and the Bowie comparisons remained, but Bejar's cryptic lyrics and unique voice gave this rant against the music industry an original quality that stood out from many of that year's releases. In the meantime, Bejar, along with Carl Newman of Zumpano, was one of the songwriters responsible for the much-acclaimed New Pornographers debut, Mass Romantic (Mint Records), released that same year.

In January 2020, Bejar presented his 11th album as Destroyer, Have We Met, which he described as his belated version of a Y2K album, in terms of both lyrical themes and musical personality, with arrangements heavy in vintage synthesizers.

A Spanish power/progressive metal outfit built around the seasoned talents of guitarist Tony Hernando (Saratoga), bassist Victor Durán, drummer Andy C., and Chilean-born vocalist Ronnie Romero, the latter of whom fronted Rainbow during their 2016 reunion shows, Lords of Black specialize in highly melodic yet always hard-hitting classic rock-fueled prog-metal. Invoking names like Masterplan, Symphony X, and Kamelot, the band issued their eponymous debut LP, which was co-produced, mixed, and mastered by Roland Grapow (Helloween, Masterplan), in 2014, followed by a heavy bout of touring that eventually landed them in the offices of Frontiers Records. After inking a deal with the Italian label, they returned to the studio to begin work on their sophomore release. The resulting II, co-produced once again by Grapow, dropped in early 2016. Two years later the band released its third long-player, Icons of the New Days.

The Districts are an American indie rock band whose work embraces the organic sounds of classic rock and indie folk while incorporating a more adventurous side that recalls alternative rock of several eras, ambitious pop, and noisy experimentation that grew more eclectic with the passage of time. The rootsy and more direct era of the Districts' music was documented well on their 2014 debut Telephone, while 2017's Popular Manipulations found them in a more energetic and experimental mood, and 2020's You Know I'm Not Going Anywhere reflected a cooler and more layered sound, with keyboards playing a bigger role in the arrangements.
