Bringing the spirit of Death Row Records to the 2010s, Sacramento MC Mozzy spits gritty rhymes with ominous productions. Born Timothy Patterson, he began rapping in 2004 under the name Lil Tim, releasing the "U Ain't Ready Like Dat" single in 2010. A name change came in 2011 when he issued the album Money Means Mozzy, which was followed by his 2013 mixtape The Tonite Show, hosted by DJ Fresh. Four mixtapes dropped in 2014, including Free Mozzy, which was issued while the MC was locked up on illegal firearm charges. Gangland landed in 2015 along with Yellow Tape Activities, and 2016 saw the Empire label issue both Beautiful Struggle and Mandatory Check. That same year, he contributed to a slew of collaborations with artists like Dutch Santana, E Mozzy, Juneonnabeat, and Philthy Rich. He followed in early 2017 with Fake Famous, which featured appearances by Iamsu!, E Mozzy, Cellyru, YFN Lucci, YG, G-Eazy, Jadakiss, and many more. After issuing the collaborative Can't Fake the Real with Blac Youngsta and Dreadlocks & Headshots with Gunplay, Mozzy released 1 Up Top Ahk, which debuted in the Top 100 on the Billboard main album chart in the summer of 2017. After appearing on the chart-topping soundtrack to the film Black Panther, Mozzy issued "Nobody Knows" with Jay Rock and DCMBR. A prolific 2018 included the Spiritual Conversations EP, as well as full-length Gangland Landlord. That year, he also joined Kae One for the collaborative set, Run It Up Activities (Team Player Records), which also featured the Jacka, Philthy Rich, and E Mozzy. In early 2019, Mozzy and Berner teamed up for the collaborative mixtape Slimey Individualz, which Mozzy followed up in May with the heartfelt "Legal Guardian/Guardian Angel," a track that paid homage to his grandmother.

Scottish indie rap-rock trio the LaFontaines created a unique sound combining influences from classic rock and R&B, hip-hop, pop, and soul, and have gradually built a reputation as one of the best live bands in Scotland.

The LaFontaines were formed in 2008 in the former industrial town of Motherwell, near Glasgow, by vocalist Kerr Okan, guitarists Iain Findlay and Darren McCaughey, bassist Anna Smith, and drummer Jamie Keenan. Influenced by acts as diverse as the Streets, the Beatles, the Beastie Boys, and Nickelback, they created a bombastic, hard-rocking, melodic, good-time sound topped by Okan's unique rapping in his native Scottish accent. Playing their first gig at the famous Glasgow venue King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, they cultivated a local fan base before building on this by touring nationally, making numerous festival appearances, and playing abroad in the U.S. and Europe.

Smith left the band in 2011 and was replaced by John Gerard. In 2015, they released on their own 889 Records their debut album, Class, which debuted at number ten on the Scottish album chart. That year they played their biggest show to date, selling out Glasgow's legendary Barrowlands venue. Findlay left in 2016 and was replaced by Neil Mulholland. Their follow-up album, 2017's Common Problem, was released by A Wolf at Your Door and had a darker, more world-weary tone. Gerard left the band in 2018 and Mulholland the following year, after which the LaFontaines continued as a trio. The band scored their first U.K. Top 40 album with their third effort, 2019's Junior on So Recordings.

Rising from social media to become a recording artist, Michigan native DDG traded comedy for rapping, releasing a series of singles and collaborations in the late 2010s. His self-released debut, Take Me Serious, arrived in 2018.
Born Darryl Granberry Jr. in Pontiac, DDG got his start in 2014, posting videos online as PontiacMadeDDG. As his following grew to over a million subscribers, he continued creating comedic content (parodies, pranks, skits, and challenges) until transitioning to rap. Early singles "Dope" and "Lettuce" with Famous Dex arrived around 2017. As his audience expanded, he attracted more high-profile collaborators, including YBN Nahmir, G Herbo, and Black Youngsta on "Run It Up" and Queen Naija on "Hold Up." He issued the mixtape Take Me Serious in 2018, following in 2019 with the EP Sorry 4 the Hold Up (Epic/Sony).

"I Don't Care" is a song by British-based female duo Shakespears Sister, released in May 1992 as the third single from their second studio album Hormonally Yours. The song reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart and had similar success internationally, reaching the top 20 in Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. It also charted on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 55. Like several of Shakespears Sister's previous singles, it was heavily remixed for its release as a single, including re-recorded vocals, added instrumentals, and a new jazz track.

The song incorporates a segment of the poem "Hornpipe" by Dame Edith Sitwell (from her Façade, and Other Poems poetry book), which is a surreal poem that attempts to capture the flow of a sailors jig. The poem is spoken by Siobhan Fahey on the song.

"Goin' Home" is a song by rock band The Rolling Stones featured on their 1966 album Aftermath. At 11 minutes and 35 seconds, it was the longest popular music song at the time and the first extended rock improvisation released by a major recording act.

Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Goin' Home" is a long blues-inspired track that is notable as one of the first songs by a rock and roll band to break the ten-minute mark and the longest recorded song on any Stones album. While many bands had experimented with length in live performances, and Bob Dylan had written many songs by this point which reached the five/six-minute mark, "Goin' Home" was the first "jam" recorded expressly for an album. In an interview with the magazine Rolling Stone, Richards said:

It was the first long rock and roll cut. It broke that two-minute barrier. We tried to make singles as long as we could do then because we just liked to let things roll on. Dylan was used to building a song for 20 minutes because of the folk thing he came from. That was another thing. No one sat down to make an 11-minute track. I mean 'Goin' Home', the song was written just the first 2 and a half minutes. We just happened to keep the tape rolling, me on guitar, Brian [Jones] on harp, Bill [Wyman, on bass] and Charlie [Watts, on drums] and Mick. If there's a piano, it's Stew [Ian Stewart].

Jack Nitzsche, a regular Stones contributor throughout the 1960s, here performs percussion.

The song, while lengthy, is built around a common theme, as opposed to later Stones songs of great length like "Midnight Rambler" or "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" which are divided into distinct sections punctuated by differing instrumentations. "Goin' Home" plays as a long jam, eventually deconstructing Richards' guitar piece, Jagger's lyrics, and Watts' drum lines which build in power as the song progresses. Jagger's lyrics are called "a basic expression of [his] pining for his girl and determining to go home and get him some. It's the bumpety-bump, ascending chorus of announcing his intentions to go home that's the most 'pop' element of the song."

Singer, songwriter, and model Justine Skye is known for her dance-oriented R&B and hip-hop-influenced sound. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1995, Skye first gained notice in her teens when she tagged along with her mother, an entertainment lawyer, to a music panel held by performance rights organization BMI. During the question-and-answer session, Skye surprised everyone in attendance by asking to sing. In front of various music executives, she performed a cover of Sam Sparro's "Black and Gold." She subsequently took singing lessons and honed her songwriting, then worked with August Rigo (Justin Bieber, One Direction, Musiq Soulchild) and Eric Hudson (Kanye West, Diddy, August Alsina). Their sessions led to Everyday Living, a confident contemporary R&B EP released on Atlantic in August 2013. The brief collection featured a cover of Aaliyah's "I Don't Wanna."

A year later, Skye returned with the slow-jam single "Collide," a DJ Mustard production that involved a guest verse from Tyga. Her second EP, Emotionally Unavailable, appeared in 2015. The following year, Skye returned with her third EP, 8 Ounces, featuring songwriting collaborations with the-Dream and Tricky Stewart. The EP included the track "Fun" featuring Wale. In 2018, Skye released her debut full-length, Ultraviolet, which featured the single "Lil' Boy." A stand-alone single, "Build," featuring Arin Ray, arrived in 2018.

"Oh wow! The history of Scotland is full of tales of mighty pirates, and none were as feared as the legendary Phann'aig Bhall (otherwise known as "Fannybaws" in Lowland Scots). I hope we've done his epic seafaring legacy justice with this song, and we hope you all enjoy singing along with it. Meet yer dad and smell yer maw!"

-

Originally known as Battleheart, Alestorm, the purveyors of the relatively unexplored musical territory known as "pirate metal," formed in their original (pre-nautical) phase in 2004. As Battleheart, the group was initially a duo formed by Gavin Harper (guitar) and Christopher Bowes (vocals and keyboards), and recorded its first EP (a self-titled affair) in 2006. Over the course of the next year, feeling the need to bring their sound to the people of Scotland, Battleheart expanded to a four-piece with the addition of bassist Dani Evans and drummer Doug Swierczek. The new crew recorded another EP soon after, entitled Terror on the High Seas, and the buzz helped land a song from the release on Metal Hammer magazine's Battle Metal V compilation. Later that year, in 2007, the bandmembers -- after signing with Napalm Records -- decided to change their name to further the cause of their unique brand of metal, settling on Alestorm. Eventually, the lineup coalesced a bit more, with Ian Wilson bringing stability to the drummer position, and Alestorm released their debut album, Captain Morgan's Revenge, in early 2008. The band toured the United States later that year with fellow folk-metal giants Týr and Heidevolk before releasing its second full-length, Black Sails at Midnight, in spring 2009. The band further cemented their reputation for pirate-themed metal over the next five years by releasing two albums, 2011's Back Through Time and 2014's Sunset on the Golden Age. A year later, their fourth album guitarist, Dani Evans, left the group; he was eventually replaced by Máté Bodor (Wisdom), who made his first recorded appearance on their fifth studio album, 2017's No Grave But the Sea.

A five-piece jam and alternative rock outfit hailing from Nashville, Moon Taxi quickly built a local following, which soon led to a record deal with 12th South Records. Members Trevor Terndrup (vocals), Spencer Thomson (guitar), Tommy Putnam (bass), Wes Bailey (keyboards), and Tyler Ritter (drums) released their debut album, Melodica, in 2007. Their next step, logically, was to keep their audiences happy and promote their album the old-fashioned way: with many, many gigs. A concert album titled Live Ride followed in 2008, and their second proper album, Cabaret, appeared in 2012. Moon Taxi signed to BMG for distribution of their 2013 LP Mountains Beaches Cities. The album led to their songs being licensed for TV and commercials, their first appearances on U.S. late-night TV including Late Show with David Letterman, and performances at music festivals such as Bonnaroo, the Governor’s Ball, and Lollapalooza. Their fourth studio LP, Daybreaker, was released in October 2015, followed in 2016 by another live album, New Year's Eve 2015. A single in early 2017, "Two High," showcased a brighter, pop-oriented sound. Later that year, another single, "Let the Record Play," arrived along with the announcement of Moon Taxi's impending fifth LP -- also called Let the Record Play -- which was released in January 2018.

Mixing frosty electronic textures, spare beats, and clear, emotive vocals, singer/songwriter AURORA works in a similar dark pop milieu as artists like Oh Land, Lykke Li, and Lorde. Her debut album, All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend, went to number one in her native Norway upon its release in 2016.

Born Aurora Aksnes near the city of Bergen, she began writing music and lyrics at a young age, eventually releasing her debut single, "Awakening," as a 17-year-old in late 2013. Honing her live show and building on the momentum from the song, AURORA issued the follow-up single "Under Stars" in late 2014. She signed with American label Glassnote and U.K.-based Decca for her debut EP, Running with the Wolves, which arrived in the first half of 2015. The singer/songwriter then came to further prominence, having covered the Oasis track "Half the World Away" for the 2015 John Lewis Christmas ad before following up with her debut full-length, All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend, in 2016. The album charted across Western Europe, topping the chart in Norway and reaching the Top 30 in the U.K., as well as cracking the Billboard 200 in the States. The follow-up, 2018's Step 1: Infections of a Different Kind, saw her integrating more down-to-earth themes, including politics and sexuality. It returned her to Norway's Top Ten, peaking at number seven.

Stepping away from her solo work, AURORA entered the studio with the Chemical Brothers, contributing to their ninth album, No Geography, which was released in April 2019. Her third LP, Step 2: A Different Kind of Human, followed on Glassnote and Decca in June of that year.

-

They were rarely cited as the most important of the first wave of British punk bands, nor one of the most influential, but in many respects, the Damned can honestly claim to be first. They released the first U.K. punk single (1976's "New Rose" b/w "Help"), the first U.K. punk album (1977's Damned Damned Damned), and were the first British punks to tour the United States. They were also one of the first major bands on the scene to break up, and were later ahead of the pack when they reunited. And few of their peers have had a longer or more interesting career path. Playing music that was dark but playful at the same time, the Damned started out as a loud, hell-bent-for-leather punk quartet. They soon began adding psychedelic and garage rock influences into their music (1979's Machine Gun Etiquette), detoured into epic-scale pop with a dash of prog (1980's The Black Album), and embraced a tuneful but muscular take on goth (1985's Phantasmagoria), all within their first ten years. While the strong, mannered but witty vocals from Dave Vanian remained a constant, the band's personnel and style was in flux as the group broke up and reunited with remarkable frequency. They finally found a relatively stable lineup in the 2000s, led by Vanian and co-founder Captain Sensible, delivering a slick but enthusiastic fusion of pop, rock, and goth on latter-day albums such as 2008's So, Who's Paranoid? and 2018's Evil Spirits. Throug it all, the band's ability to take their music seriously without taking themselves seriously endeared them to a tremendously loyal fan base.

Under the name A.CHAL, Peruvian-born singer, songwriter, and producer Alejandro Chal offers a moody, atmospheric take on electronic R&B with lyrics half-sung, half-rapped, and often switching between English and Spanish. Chal's family moved to the U.S. when he was four years old, settling in Queens, New York. He began rapping at a young age and soon began experimenting with beats with a neighborhood friend. Relocating to Los Angeles in 2010 to pursue a music career, Chal self-released his debut EP, 2013's Ballroom Riots, which caught the interest of Sony ATV, which signed him to a publishing deal. His 2015 single "Round Whippin'" found widespread exposure when Beats1 DJ Zane Lowe gave the song a world premiere on his show. It was an effective boon to Chal's career, and by year's end he'd racked up numerous critical accolades. "Round Whippin'" was included on his 2016 debut full-length, Welcome to GAZI, introducing his hazy, nocturnal sound to an even larger audience. Following a collaboration with French producer STWO, Chal began issuing singles in advance of his next LP, ON GAZ, which arrived in June 2017 and included the hit "Love N Hennessy," which was later remixed with guests 2 Chainz and Nicky Jam. In 2018, Chal signed with Epic. His first output for the label arrived later that year via EP Exotigaz.

Rapper Lil Skies was born Kimetrius Foose in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania in 1998. Interested in music from his early childhood, Foose was recording and writing lyrics by the time he was 12, and eventually took on the Lil Skies moniker when he began taking his music more seriously. When he was enrolled in Shippensburg University, he dropped out to focus on music as his fan base grew exponentially. By this time he was performing regularly, even opening for rap sensations like Fetty Wap, among others. He released several singles and videos, notably "Signs of Jealousy," which caught the attention of Atlantic Records. The major label offered Lil Skies a deal in 2017, and his debut mixtape, Life of a Dark Rose, appeared near the end of the year. The set peaked at number ten on the Billboard 200. In 2018, he was joined by Yung Pinch on the Top 100 hit "I Know You" and Rich the Kid on "Creeping." Additional non-album singles followed, leading to the release of his sophomore effort Shelby, which arrived in early 2019. The album featured appearances by Gucci Mane, Landon Cube, and Gunna.
