The rousing Canadian indie rock duo Japandroids rose to widespread acclaim in 2009 following the release of their debut album, Post-Nothing. Working in the timeless guitar-and-drums format, Brian King and David Prowse forged a sound that was equal parts garage, punk, and classic rock & roll, touring heavily and earning a pair of Juno Award nominations both for their debut and critically acclaimed 2012 follow-up, Celebration Rock. After a lengthy touring hiatus, Japandroids returned to the stage and to the studio for 2017's more polished Near to the Wild Heart of Life.

The Lawrence Arms got together in 1999 after the departure of Chicago pop-punkers the Broadways, Slapstick, Baxter, and Tricky Dick. The collaboration of Brendan Kelly (vocals/bass), Neil Hennessy (drums), and Chris McCaughan (guitar/vocals) produced music in the same vein of their previous bands: clever -- often politically inspired -- pop-punk with an aggressive, gritty edge. Asian Man Records released the Lawrence Arms' first album, A Guided Tour of Chicago, in November of 1999, while their second album, Ghost Stories, followed six months later. Present Day Memories, a split release with Asian Man peers the Chinkees, appeared in summer 2001. After 13 straight months of touring and drunken debauchery, the Lawrence Arms joined forces with Fat Wreck for 2002's Apathy and Exhaustion. The Greatest Story Ever Told was issued in September 2003; two years later Cocktails & Dreams, a compilation of B-sides, live recordings, and stray tracks, surfaced. Their next full-length, Oh! Calcutta!, came in March 2006, followed by a statewide tour with NOFX. With the exception of an EP in 2009, the wryly titled Buttsweat and Tears, the band was not to release anything further until 2014, thanks to the members' involvement in side projects the Falcon and Sundowner, and Hennessy's stint with Smoking Popes. In fact, some believed the band had split completely, until they announced in late 2013 that they had signed to Epitaph and would be releasing a new single, "News from Yalta," and a full-length album, Metropole, in January of the following year. The album had a melodic, accessible sound and was hailed as their most mature effort to date. In 2018, nearly 20 years after forming, the band issued the 29-track best-of compilation We Are the Champions of the World. Spanning their entire career, the album also featured unreleased tracks taken from their 2006 sessions for Oh! Calcutta.

Lennon Stella's path to a career in music has featured enough unexpected twists and turns to seem like the plot of a TV drama, which in her case is certainly appropriate. Lennon and her younger sister Maisy were the daughters of a Canadian country music duo, and thanks to their parents' appearance on a televised talent competition, they were cast on the popular series Nashville, playing the daughters of a well-known country music star. After several seasons of playing a talented young vocalist, reality started to mirror fiction as Lennon began writing songs for the show, and in 2018 she stepped out as a solo artist and songwriter with the song "Like Everybody Else."

Her debut EP, Love, Me, followed later that year, and in 2020 she issued her long-awaited debut solo album, Three. Two. One., which had largely an electronic pop sound, rather than the country style on which she'd made her name.

Fannypack were comprised of singers Jessibel Suthiwong, Belinda Lovell, and Cat Hartwell, with beat-making support from Matt Goias and Fancy. The two New York DJs first enlisted Brown University graduate Hartwell to sing over their new project, which brazenly crossed L'Trimm/J.J. Fad-style chintz rap with elements of modern-day electroclash and hip-hop. Brooklyn high-school students Suthiwong and Lovell were then added, mainly for their multicultural good looks and command of street-level slang. With the provocative booty bounce of the goofy lead single "Cameltoe" burning up radio nationwide, Tommyboy smelled summertime windfall, and geared up with plans for a full-length LP and video for "Cameltoe." Fannypack's So Stylistic dropped July 8, 2003. The album received critical praise from places as diverse as Blender and The New York Times and ended up on many publications' best of 2003 lists. The group returned with 2005's disappointing album See You Next Tuesday and split up soon after its release.

A Los Angeles-based vocalist, producer, and sketch comedian, Oliver Tree brings a colorful, scooter-loving persona to his indie pop- and hip-hop-informed dance music. A native of Santa Cruz, Tree emerged in October 2016 as a featured performer on the single "Forget It" by hometown EDM musician Getter. That same month, he released his first collaboration with DJ Whethan, the compassion anthem "When I'm Down." The song went viral, garnering millions of streams over the next year. A record deal with Atlantic followed, and in mid-2017 Tree issued the solo singles "Welcome to L.A.," "All I Got," and "Cheapskate." Another collaboration with Whethan, "Enemy," saw release in September 2017 before his own single, "Upside Down," arrived the first week of 2018. Those tracks landed on his Alien Boy EP, which was released via Atlantic Records that February. He quickly followed with additional singles such as "Movement" and the rock-tinged "Hurt." 2019 brought singles like "Fuck" and "Miracle Man," the latter of which was included on Tree's EP Do You Feel Me?.

American rapper BlocBoy JB emerged in 2017 with a pair of viral hits that highlighted his speedy rhymes and big bass production from longtime producer Tay Keith. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, JB flirted with gang-related criminal activity before quickly immersing himself in his music. After releasing a series of well-received mixtapes, he caught the attention of Canadian rapper Drake, who collaborated with him on the viral single "Look Alive." The track reached the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100, and helped solidify JB's fan base.

Born James Baker in Memphis, Tennessee, JB grew up in a large, single-parent household and would sneak his brother's equipment away to record his own music. The self-taught producer and dancer released his first song, "Goons Coming," when he was just a teenager. In 2017, he issued "No Chorus, Pt. 6" and "Shoot," the latter of which took off and caught the ears of high-profile rappers like Drake. Produced by Keith, the track was featured on his Who Am I 3 mixtape, and was recorded in the rapper's closet. As his online audience grew, he issued additional mixtapes like The Purple M&M. In early 2018, he scored a major co-sign when Drake joined him on the track "Look Alive." Included on JB's Simi mixtape, the track amassed millions of streams within a month of its release. It also became JB's Billboard chart debut, landing at number six on the Hot 100. He returned to the studio in 2019 and issued the bouncy single "Mercedes."

As an early pillar of Atlanta's groundbreaking trap scene, Rich the Kid moved from collaborations with Migos, Young Thug, and others to starting his own label just a few years later. With a style very much in line with the dark, highly pressurized flows of other icons of Atlanta hip-hop, he established himself with a string of mixtapes and singles that has led to a deal with major-label Interscope Records, the multi-platinum hit "New Freezer" (2017), and the Top Five albums The World Is Yours (2018) and The World Is Yours 2 (2019).

Nicknamed after the street on which he grew up -- in the Crown Heights neighborhood of New York City's Brooklyn borough -- rapper Roland Collins started a prolific run of mixtapes toward the end of the 2000s. In 2009, he made his debut as Troy Ave with I'm in Traffick. By the time he was selected as a member of XXL magazine's 2014 Freshman Class, his BSB label had well over a dozen of his releases in its discography. The biggest release was New York City: The Album, Collins' first proper full-length, for many the introduction to the rapper's ruthless hustling narratives. Aided by appearances from Raekwon, Prodigy, and Pusha T, it appeared on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Another set regarded as an album, Major Without a Deal, arrived in 2015 and peaked at number 14 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. In May of the following year, Collins was arrested for illegal weapon possession and attempted murder in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred at a T.I. concert in Manhattan. Collins, who was shot during the incident, claimed self-defense, and a mixtape, Free Troy Ave, was issued while he was remanded without bail. Eventually released on bond, Collins quickly returned with another 2016 tape, Roland Collins. The following year found him busy with two more releases, Dope Boy Troy and Album of the Summer.

"I Am Waiting" is a song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards that was first released on the Rolling Stones' 1966 album Aftermath.

"I Am Waiting" was recorded between 6 and 9 March 1966 at RCA Studios in Hollywood, California.

The song's lyrics are obscure. They have the singer "waiting for someone to come out of somewhere" but don't provide any details of the circumstances. According to Allmusic critic Richie Unterberger, this is not a problem since "enhancing the general mysterious atmosphere is more important than providing an answer."Music critic Bill Janovitz suggests that the first verse sounds like singer Jagger is "tiptoeing as if in a game of hide and seek." Janovitz suggests that the first refrain begins to suggest that the singer may not just be waiting for an actual person, but rather it suggests "a deepening perception...that promises to offset the paranoia in the lyrics" with the words "It happens all the time/It's censored from our minds." Rolling Stones biographer Martin Elliot interprets the message of the lyrics as "don't fear the reaper."

The music of the song is one of several Rolling Stones songs from this period that shows Appalachian and English folk influences. As he does on "Lady Jane," another song from Aftermath, Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones plays a dulcimer on "I Am Waiting." Jack Nitzsche plays harpsichord. Bill Wyman's slow and "eerie" bassline and the acoustic guitars add to the effect. In the song's unusual structure, the refrains are louder and rock harder than the slow verses. In Janovitz's interpretation, the harder refrains permit Jagger to "vent the frustration" that has been built up through the verses. Author James Hector remarks that this allows the song to "[blow] hot and cold with remarkable subtlety" and Rolling Stones biographer Steve Appleford states that the eruptions in the refrains produce a "fine melodramatic effect" and allows the pop music of the verses to "explode into moments of yearning."

Birds of Tokyo are an alternative rock band from Australia who rose to domestic mainstream success with their second album, Universes (2008). Founded in 2004 in Perth, Western Australia, the band originally comprised Karnivool's Ian Kenny (vocals), Adam Spark (guitar), Anthony Jackson (bass), and Adam Weston (drums). Birds of Tokyo made their recording debut in 2005 with a pair of EPs (Birds of Tokyo, One Way/Stay) released in association with the independent label Egg Records. The song "Stay" earned the band its first of many WAMi Awards (West Australian Music Industry Awards), this one for Rock Song of the Year. Two years later, Birds of Tokyo released their full-length album debut, Day One (2007), and won a pair of WAMi Awards (Favorite Newcomer, Best Male Vocalist). Their second album, Universes (2008), marked their mainstream breakthrough, peaking at number three on the Australian albums chart and spawning a pair of singles ("Silhouettic," "Broken Bones").

The band's eponymously titled third album was released by EMI in July of 2010, included the hit singles “Plans” and “Wild at Heart,” and went on to receive double-platinum certifications. Following this success, the Australian music industry accolades continued to flood in. These included APRA awards for songwriting and a “Most Popular Australian Artist” award at the 2011 ARIA ceremony. Ahead of sessions in Los Angeles for a fourth album with David Cooley and Tony Hoffer, Birds of Tokyo brought two new players into the fold: Glenn Sarangapany on keyboards and Ian Berney who replaced Jackson on bass. Also prior to these sessions, Kenny, Spark, and Weston each left Perth behind, relocating to cities on the eastern coast of Australia. The resulting record, March Fires, was appropriately released in March 2013 and became the band's first album to hit the number one spot in the Australian charts, eventually going gold. The success of March Fires opened up new doors for the band internationally, and they spent much of 2014 in the U.S. with Los Angeles as their temporary home base. In between U.S. tours, they wrote and recorded four new songs which were released in April 2015 as the standalone EP Anchor. Brace, the band's dark and gritty fifth studio long-player, dropped the following year.

A pivotal figure in Britain's early-'60s folk revival and subsequent folk-rock heyday, Shirley Collins' influence on these movements, and folk music at large, cannot be understated. With her pure, unaffected vocal tone and Sussex accent, she first launched her recording career in the late '50s, adapting the pastoral folk songs of her rural upbringing for simple banjo accompaniment before partnering with famed musicologist Alan Lomax on his song-collecting journey through the American South, a trip that produced a now-legendary collection of blues and folk field recordings. Collins' bold spirit and eclecticism truly began to flourish with the pioneering jazz-folk fusion of her 1964 album with guitarist Davy Graham, Folk Roots, New Routes, followed a few years later with a sequence of albums recorded with her sister, keyboardist and arranger Dolly Collins, which explored medieval fare and helped launch British folk-rock's golden age. During her marriage to Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span founder Ashley Hutchings, she was backed by many of the scene's brightest stars on one of folk-rock's truly seminal works, the 1971 album No Roses. After struggling with the loss of her voice, she stepped away from music for several decades, though over time her legacy was embraced by succeeding generations of musicians including Billy Bragg, Alasdair Roberts, and David Tibet, the latter of whom was instrumental in helping Collins' music find an audience in the 21st century. Near the end of 2016, Collins' 38-year hiatus was finally broken with the release of her critically acclaimed album Lodestar.
