Carmen Suite is a one-act ballet created in 1967 by Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso to music by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin for his wife, prima ballerina assoluta Maya Plisetskaya. The premiere took place on 20 April 1967 at the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow. The music, taken from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet and arranged for strings and percussion, is not a 19th-century pastiche but rather "a creative meeting of the minds," as Shchedrin put it, with Bizet's melodies reclothed in a variety of fresh instrumental colors (including the frequent use of percussion), set to new rhythms and often phrased with a great deal of sly wit. Initially banned by the Soviet hierarchy as "disrespectful" to the opera for precisely these qualities, the ballet has since become Shchedrin's best-known work and has remained popular in the West for what reviewer James Sanderson calls "an iconoclastic but highly entertaining retelling of Bizet's opera."

Tone-Tone is a rapper from Detroit who debuted in 2004 and experienced some local success with singles such as "I Ain't Playin' Witcha" and "What Up Doe." Born Antonio Henderson in 1984 in Detroit, MI, he attended Finney High School and began rapping at age nine. At age 18 he made his full-length album debut with Skoolz in Session (2004). Released on the local independent label Wide Open Records, Skoolz in Session spawned the local hit single "I Ain't Playin' Witcha," which was given lots of radio airplay in Detroit. Tone-Tone was subsequently signed to a recording contract with Sho'nuff Records, the label of Southern rap producer Jazze Pha, and released a series of mixtapes on his own label, New Skool Entertainment: Strictly fo da Streetz (2005), Ride with Cha Boy (2006), and Motivation for da New Generation (2007). Nothing came of the association with Jazze Pha, however, and Tone-Tone returned to Wide Open Records for the release of his second album, D-Boy Fresh (2007), which features the single "Luv da Way She Doin' It."

Bettye Lavette - "Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert (From The Archives)" [R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Live In Concert]

Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert (From The Archives)

"Live @ NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert (From The Archives)" music video by Bettye Lavette

Description : Bettye Lavette: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert From The Archives

We've been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to YouTube!

Watch Bettye LaVette’s Tiny Desk concert from 2010:

Frannie Kelley | May 21, 2010

We were not prepared for Bettye LaVette's appearance in the NPR Music offices. We thought we were — having set up our cameras and recording gear and signed in all the friends who had heard she was scheduled to play and beaten down our door.

But then she blew into the room and conquered it before she'd sung a single note. She teased Bob Boilen mercilessly and told all the women how beautiful they were. She had reporters and producers doing her bidding all over the building. But after we cleared a spot for her to perch on the corner of Bob's desk, she went to work.

The first song she sang, a cover of Ringo Starr's "It Don't Come Easy," killed the room. LaVette hunched her shoulders, dropped her chin and yanked the song out of her throat. It felt like a confession. Every movement she made — whether she threw her head back in a desperate wail or drooped it to close a phrase signifying defeat — shoved further meaning into the words. Her voice was bruising, shocking, and she sang really loud.

Before she began, LaVette asked us to close the blinds. It was 3 in the afternoon, but she said she was about to sing some night songs. She sang end of the night songs: "It Don't Come Easy," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," "Nights in White Satin." (Due to licensing issues, only "It Don't Come Easy" is available in the video above, at least for the time being.) But she took those songs — glammed up and kindly lit in the recordings we remember — and tore off their clothes. She wrestled them to the ground. It was a real performance, from which each of us emerged a little sore.

At the end, LaVette's accompanist — Alan Hill, who had trained a gimlet eye on LaVette all the while — registered his approval. "We should play more office parties," he said.

An R&B diva with a sharp, distinctive vocal style that balances passion, ferocity, and confidence, Bettye LaVette experienced early success before spending years as a cult figure among fans of vintage soul (especially in Europe and the U.K.), only to find a new and appreciative audience in the 2000s. LaVette has a strong, clear voice that can caress or cut deep at will, and while she rarely writes her material, she's a gifted interpreter, giving songs a reading that fills them with her own personality while bringing out unexplored facets of the author's work. From her first single in 1962, "My Man -- He's a Loving Man," LaVette has been a clever and impassioned vocalist, but ironically, it was her more mature work of the late '60s onward where she developed the instincts that truly set her apart. Her troubles with various record labels would result in much of her strongest work barely being heard, though (and in the case of her outstanding album Child of the Seventies, sitting unreleased for decades). The 2003 live album A Woman Like Me finally earned her a hearing from American soul music enthusiasts, and 2005's I've Got My Own Hell to Raise was a studio set that presented her in utterly uncompromised fashion and demonstrated she was one of the strongest and savviest soul singers alive. A series of critically celebrated albums followed, most thematic in nature, including 2007's The Scene of the Crime (a collaboration with the alt-country act the Drive-By Truckers), 2010's Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, and 2018's Things Have Changed (devoted to songs written by Bob Dylan).

'Oh Happy Day' – Edwin Hawkins Singers

Today is Pentecost, also known as Whit Sunday or Whitsunday. As it is an important Christian holiday in the Netherlands, we publish this appropriate song 'Oh Happy Day' today.

Edwin Reuben Hawkins (August 19, 1943 – January 15, 2018) was an American gospel musician, pianist, choir master, composer, and arranger. He was one of the originators of the urban contemporary gospel sound. He was probably best known for his arrangement of "Oh Happy Day" (1968–69), which was included on the "Songs of the Century" list. "Oh Happy Day" rocketed to sales of more than a million copies within two months. It crossed over to the pop charts, making U.S. No. 4, UK No. 2, Canada No. 2, No. 2 on the Irish Singles Chart, and No. 1 on the French Singles Charts and the German Singles Charts in 1969. It then became an international success, selling more than 7 million copies worldwide, and Hawkins was awarded his first Grammy for it.
It became no. 1 in the Dutch Top 40 on 7 June 1969.

The American gospel music singer Dorothy Combs Morrison (born Dorothy Marie Combs, May 8, 1944) sang lead vocal on the song "Oh Happy Day". In the 1960s she joined the Edwin Hawkins singers. She toured with Edwin Hawkins, Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs, and Delaney and Bonnie, among others.

Australian rapper Illy defied the "haters" to make resolutely commercial, pop-influenced hip-hop that eventually snagged him a major-label deal and a number one album. Born Alasdair Murray on September 6, 1986 and brought up in the beachfront Melbourne suburb of Frankston, Illy was a teenage tearaway who barely scraped through school. He got his start in hip-hop at just 13 with the local Crooked Eye Crew, with whom he released his first "mixtape" CD. Illy held down a succession of low-paying jobs before deciding to finally knuckle down -- he applied to law school and emerged some years later with a degree. Eventually, the Crooked Eye Crew split up after each of its members became too busy with their own projects, and Illy decided to pursue a solo career. He signed to the Obese label and released his debut solo album, Long Story Short, in 2009. From the outset, his music was based on strong melodic hooks and his louche, laid-back, sing-speak flow. The album hit the urban chart but did not bother the pop chart. However, he built exposure by embarking on a nationwide tour, and his sophomore effort, The Chase, released the following year, did much better, going to number 25 on the main chart.

2012's Bring It Back was his breakthrough album, going to number 15 upon release and winning him an ARIA Award (the Australian Grammys) for best urban album. Following its release, he left Obese to set up his own label, OneTwo, and signed a licensing deal with Warner Music for the release of his fourth album, 2013's Cinematic. The album was largely produced by his former Crooked Eye crewmate M-Phazes, who had since become a big name in his own right, contributing beats to the likes of Eminem. It was more "pop" than ever before, as Illy broadened his songwriting palette, and featured collaborations with numerous guest vocalists including the Hilltop Hoods, Drapht, Daniel Merriweather, and Scarlett Stevens. The album hit number five on the chart and went gold. Illy's streak of success continued with his 2016 album Two Degrees. His most pop-oriented to date, it gave him his biggest hit yet, going to number one and producing the number two single "Papercuts," featuring Vera Blue. Produced once again by M-Phazes, it also featured Rudimental's Anne-Marie on the track "Catch 22" and was nominated for no fewer than six ARIA awards.

Description : Wire: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

This performance was recorded on March 9, 2020. We will continue releasing Tiny Desk videos of shows that had already been taped. In light of current events, NPR is postponing new live tapings of Tiny Desk Concerts. In the meantime, check out Tiny Desk (home) concerts! They’re recorded by the artists in their home. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

May 27, 2020 | Bob Boilen -- For me, it was beyond surreal to watch Wire performing at my desk, in broad daylight, in 2020. I spent many an evening over the past 40 years, listening to their original, artful bursts of noise and imagery, seeing them in dark clubs in the '80s and beyond. From the time I first heard them in 1977, few bands have encapsulated my musical aesthetics like Wire.

And yet there they were, with three original bandmates: Colin Newman, singing his enigmatic poetry, and those driving rhythms of Graham Lewis on bass and Robert Grey (aka Robert Gotobed) on drums. Matthew Simms was the 'new' bandmate, having now played with the band for the past 10 years. What's most remarkable is how the sound of songs such as "Cactused" from their 17th album, Mind Hive, sit so well next to "French Film Blurred" from their 1978 album — and one of my favorite records ever made — Chairs Missing.

Try and imagine your favorite artist today, playing a concert in someone's office in 2062 and still having an emotional impact with extraordinary new songs. As I said, it's beyond surreal and genuinely thrilling.
