Sam Hunt marks a generational shift in country music, both in music and business. Hunt slips hip-hop phrasing and modern R&B rhythms into country-pop, signaling a progression from the boisterous bro-country that had previously defined the 2010s. "Leave the Light On" introduced this blend in 2014 and it became a smash, the first of his many number one singles on the country chart. This success paled in comparison to 2017's "Body Like a Back Road," which spent months at number one and broke the record for most weeks in the top spot. Released independent of an album, "Body Like a Back Road" showed that Hunt's rise was fueled by a mastery of the digital marketplace. As much as his music, it's this savviness that has marked Sam Hunt as the start of a new generation.

The Piano Quintet in G Minor, opus 57, by Dmitri Shostakovich is one of his best-known chamber works. Like most piano quintets, it is written for piano and string quartet (two violins, viola and cello).

Shostakovich began work on the piece in the summer of 1940 and completed it on September 14. It was written for the Beethoven Quartet, as were most of his string quartets, and premiered by them with Shostakovich himself at the piano on November 23, 1940 at the Moscow Conservatory, to great success. In 1941, it was awarded the Stalin Prize.

A typical performance of the quintet runs slightly more than 30 minutes.

Description : Holly Valance - Down Boy (Official Video)

Taken from the album "Footprints" released October 14th 2002

Listen to "Down Boy" -

Unusually, Australian singer Holly Valance's first single, "Kiss Kiss," was released in the U.K. prior to its release at home, in the knowledge that the record would make a sizable impression in the bigger market. Valance was already well known in Great Britain for her appearances in the popular teen-oriented soap opera Neighbours. (A decade earlier the program had also launched the international careers of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan.)

Born Holly Vukadinovic, her family originated from Serbia but she was born in Australia on May 11, 1983. Valance was just four years old when Minogue and Donovan (a couple both on and off the screen) were regular shoppers at Holly's father's clothing store in Melbourne. Valance started dancing and putting on shows for her family at home, and worked as a model from the age of 14. She won a part on Neighbours by the time she was 16, and appeared as one of the show's most popular new characters from 1999 to 2002.

Just as Minogue had almost 15 years earlier, Valance moved naturally into a dance-pop music career. Her debut album, 2002's Footprints, was released on London and featured production from Nellee Hooper, Anders Kallmark, and Phil Thornalley. The trailer single "Kiss Kiss" hit the top of the charts in the U.K. and Australia, and two further singles ("Down Boy," "Naughty Girl") made the Top Five in Australia. The album reached the Top 20 and earned gold certifications in both countries.

Fusing introspective songwriting with vivid polyrhythmic indie rock and pop, Wye Oak emerged from Baltimore's underground scene in the mid-2000s to acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. The duo of singer/guitarist Jenn Wasner and drummer/keyboardist Andy Stack took their name from a symbolic 460-year-old tree in their home state of Maryland. Formed in 2006 under the moniker Monarch, Wasner and Stack recorded their first album in varied spots, bouncing around various Baltimore basements and apartments, eventually landing a record deal with indie heavyweight Merge. The label would go on to release the act's 2008 debut, If Children, as well as the 2009 follow-up Knot and 2010 EP My Neighbor/My Creator. By the time of their 2011 self-produced album, Civilian, which was also released by Merge, Wasner and Stack had refined their sound to a fine point and had gained a devoted following. After the record's release, the duo embarked on a lengthy tour that left them completely spent and in need of a break. Once finished with their obligations, Stack relocated to Texas and Wasner launched two new projects, the more experimental Flock of Dimes and the electronic R&B duo Dungeonesse with songwriter/producer Jon Ehrens. When the time came to get back to Wye Oak, Wasner switched from guitar to bass, feeling that they had exhausted their previous guitar-based approach. Relying more on synths and drum machines and adding in some R&B influences in place of folk, their fourth album, Shriek, was recorded at the Rare Book Room with Nicolas Vernhes and released by Merge in April of 2014. After the album's release, Wasner stayed busy providing guest vocals on albums by Mac McCaughan, Soft Pink Truth, and Shearwater, while also readying the first Flock of Dimes album, which was issued by Partisan Records in late 2016. A few months before that, the band and Merge dug into the archives and uncovered some songs that were written and recorded between the releases of Civilian and Shriek. Titled Tween, the eight-song collection showed some behind-the-scenes footage of the band's creative shift between the two albums. A proper studio entry arrived in the spring of 2018 with The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs, a bright and electrifying set that continued Wye Oak's evolution into stranger sonic territories.

"Vamos a la playa" (Spanish for "Let's go to the beach") is a song recorded by Italian duo Righeira in 1983. The song, whose lyrics are in Spanish, was composed by Stefano Righi together with Carmelo la Bionda. The track was a big hit all over Europe in the summer of 1983. It reached number 53 in the UK Singles Chart. Despite its ostensibly innocuous beach theme, the song actually talks about the explosion of an atomic bomb.

Pre-order the "Death of the Cosmic" EP here:

out August 28th

Austin, Texas-based melodic death-doom metal unit HINAYANA have been turning heads in the metal scene since their formation in 2014, starting out as a one-man band spearheaded by frontman Casey Hurd. Now, after releasing their crushing 2018 full-length Order Divine and subsequently securing the attention of Napalm Records, HINAYANA are poised to release their next musical offering – the crushing Death Of The Cosmic EP – set for release on August 28, 2020.

Today, HINAYANA are introducing their new and improved sound to the world via the charging, melancholy crusher “Cold Conception”, featuring trailblazing late Tengger Cavalry frontman and multi-instrumentalist Nature Ganganbaigal on Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle). These expansive contributions melded with earth-shattering vocals, unrelenting mix-paced drums and searing guitar leads make “Cold Conception” and its grim, expansive official music video a must-listen/see.

Vocalist/guitarist Casey Hurd states about the track:
“While writing “Cold Conception”, I wanted to create something more energetic than the other tracks on the EP while keeping the mid-paced, brooding/rhythmic sound that I enjoy writing the most. The song is about the aimless, cold, modern world man has created and somehow wandered into at the same time, and the accelerating journey to reach a point of no return where many civilizations have collapsed in the past. I’m honored to have been able to work with Nature Ganganbaigal of Tengger Cavalry on this track before he passed away, he was excited and enthusiastic about the project. The track features his horsehead fiddle playing, creating some of the most sorrowful and bittersweet moments the band has ever produced on this track alone, so much so that we all got goosebumps listening to his parts in the studio during the mixing process.”

Portuguese "cathartic" black metal outfit Gaerea produce a particularly anguished form of the genre, combining it with elements of hardcore and sludge metal with a hefty dose of emotional outpouring.

Unsettling WhispersFormed in 2016, the band released their eponymous debut EP in November of that year through Everlasting Spew. Choosing to remain completely anonymous and unseen, forgoing even the mononymous stage names common in the genre, the band always appeared masked in black hoods bearing a sigil reminiscent of those used in medieval demonology. Their cosmic-horror concept of "the void" was nothing new, but their musical style brought a breath of fresh air to the genre. Thicker and crustier than the usual shrill black metal sound, it had a density that drew in fans of other genres such as hardcore and sludge, and an overwhelming feeling of rage, anguish, and despair. Gaerea refined this sound further on their debut full-length album, Unsettling Whispers, released in 2018 through Transcending Obscurity, then signed to Season of Mist for 2020's Limbo, their most accomplished work to that date, which was preceded by the singles "Null" and the 11-minute "To Ain."

Fronted by the enigmatic John Watts (vocals/guitar), Fischer-Z leaped onto the music scene in 1979 with their quirky debut album, Word Salad. This quartet (also featuring Steve Skolnick on keyboards, Steve Liddle on drums, and David Graham on bass) played a rough-and-tumble form of new wave that was equal parts Roxy Music and Talking Heads with art pop and prog rock leanings. Watts' vocals were extremely distinctive, veering from a low baritone to a higher register that was not unlike Pete Townsend on helium.

Singing country music with a soulful edge and more than a dash of pop polish, Brett Eldredge was born in Paris, Illinois on March 23, 1986, and grew up listening to singers Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, and Bobby Darin. After hearing Brooks & Dunn at the age of 16, he became fascinated by country music, a fascination that stayed with him when he began attending Elmhurst College in Chicago. After a trip to Nashville, where he heard his cousin Terry Eldredge (a veteran of Dolly Parton's band and a member of the Grascals) play at the Station Inn, Eldredge was inspired to transfer to Middle Tennessee State University, immersing himself in the vocal stylings of country singers like George Jones, Ray Price, and Vince Gill. He also began working on writing his own material and started performing at songwriter nights in the Nashville area. Eventually he was introduced to producer and publisher Byron Gallimore, who signed Eldredge to his publishing company and encouraged him to keep writing songs.

Eldredge returned in the spring of 2020 with an EP of songs culled from his fourth album Sunday Drive, a collection anchored by the single "Gabrielle."

A versatile post-hardcore unit based out of San Diego, California, Thousand Below emerged in 2016 with a sound that pairs emotionally charged lyrics, melodic riffage, and combustible breakdowns with the dynamic atmospherics of post-rock.

Employing a sonic attack that evokes contemporaries like Bring Me the Horizon, Underoath, and Devil Wears Prada, the band formed around the talents of James DeBerg (vocals), Devin Chance (guitar), Josh Thomas (guitar), Josh Billimoria (bass), and Garrett Halvax (drums). Thousand Below came together quickly and hashed out a demo that impressed Rise Records, who released their debut studio album, Love You Let Too Close, in October 2017. Guitarist Chance left the fold shortly before recording the group's sophomore effort. The resulting Gone in Your Wake, which employed a cleaner and more electronics-forward approach, arrived in 2019 and continued to push against the sonic architecture of the post-hardcore genre.

Son of reggae artist Chronicle, Jamaica's Chronixx got his start under the name Little Chronicle. Born Jamar Rolando McNaughton, Chronixx showed musical promise at a young age, prompting his father to bring his son into the studio where he would meet reggae singers like Gregory Isaacs and Burro Banton. He launched his own career in 2003 while still singing harmony with artists like Lutan Fyah. A string of singles in 2011 that included "Behind Curtain" and "African Heritage" helped put him on reggae's frontline, and in 2012, the mixtape Light a Fyah appeared, presented by Diplo under his Major Lazer alias. The singles "Tell Mi Now" and "Here Comes Trouble" both landed in 2013. 2014 saw the release of Chronixx's debut EP, Dread & Terrible. Hitting the top spot of the Billboard Reggae Charts on release, the EP went on to spend 42 consecutive weeks in the Top Ten. Chronixx continued to earn plaudits for his music, with nominations for MOBOs and gongs at the International Reggae & World Music Awards and the Linkage Awards. 2015 saw him appearing on Joey Bada$$' debut album and performing at the Glastonbury Festival in the U.K., as well as releasing the singles "Ghetto People" and "Light It Up." Chronixx's long-awaited debut album finally appeared in 2017, with Chronology receiving praise and Grammy nomination for its mix of socially conscious nu-roots and uplifting contemporary reggae. Two years later in 2019, Chronixx issued a deluxe edition of Dread & Terrible to celebrate its fifth anniversary.

Known for acting roles including Zoe Vaughn on MTV's Scream series, Kiana Ledé has also been active as a pop and R&B vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from a young age.

After landing a contract with major-label RCA by winning Kidz Bop's Kidz Star USA talent competition in 2011, she made her recording debut soon after with "Do the Mermaid" for an animated film. "Hey Chica," her first single, followed in 2012 and appeared on the soundtrack for the second Smurfs movie. For a few years, Ledé was visible more as an actor than a singer. Signed to Orange Factory Music, she began recording piano ballads (including covers of contemporary hits), as heard on the 2015 EP Soulfood Sessions. A year later, she issued the holiday-themed Christmas by Ledé.

A series of singles, including "I Choose You" and "FairPlay," arrived on the UMG-distributed Republic label during 2017, with a remix of the latter track landing on her third effort, Selfless, which was released in 2018. That year, Ledé starred in the Netflix comedy All About the Washingtons with Rev Run and his wife, Justine Simmons. A remix of the Selfless album track "EX," with rapper Lil Baby, was issued in early 2019, followed later in the year by the EP Myself. In April 2020, she released her full-length debut, KiKi. Ledé co-wrote all the tracks on the album, which was executive produced by Mike Woods and featured appearances by Ari Lennox, Lucky Daye, 6LACK, and Moneybagg Yo.

‘Don’t Worry’ from The 1975’s new album, ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’. Out now -

The 1975 and Ben Ditto have curated an online exhibition of 15 artists responding to tracks from ‘NOACF’.
10 Rindon Johnson responds to ‘Don’t Worry’

Like a couple other artists in this exhibition, Rindon Johnson was inspired by ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’ to produce a vision of utopia. “In almost all my work,” he says, “I like to make sure that if I’m animating a different type of reality, it speaks to the possibility of a different state of being and relation. So I wanted to set this film in a permaculture city; one that lives harmoniously with the earth and encourages the slow stillness of being in direct dialogue with one’s natural surroundings.”

In Johnson’s computer-generated city of tomorrow, the sidewalks are made of packed earth and orchards grow on the street providing healthy food for all. Clean energy come from wind turbines and solar panels on the roofs. It’s a greener, more socialist vision of urban society, but also a charming and sexy one.

The film’s narrative came to Johnson organically upon hearing the song for the first time, he says: “I closed my eyes and sort of felt the movement of a really gentle dance and thought it might be a nice way to speak towards that sensation. To think about different forms of closeness. I also didn’t want to do anything too over the top because the song demands something quiet and straightforward; a kind of direct address to another person.”

His character takes a walk through the neighbourhood one evening, listening to the uplifting piano ballad ‘Don’t Worry’, and looking up at a window, happens to catch somebody dancing on their own. The two strangers share a moment of intimacy together through the window. It’s a moment of empathy and perhaps erotic frisson; a socially distanced romance.

During this time of crises, particularly in urban centres and in the United States, many of us have been thinking about how modern cities and societies can be improved; and Johnson has not only been dreaming of what these cities could look like, but also of the kinds of lives we might live within them.

Rapper/songwriter/producer/visual artist Duckwrth was born Jared Lee in Los Angeles in 1989. His childhood was sheltered, and he spent much of his time inside, watching cartoons and drawing. He channeled some of his artistic spirit enrolled in art school in San Francisco, but he ultimately dropped out and made his way back to Los Angeles. In the mid-2010s, he began releasing his own songs online under the Duckwrth moniker and expanded his audience when he did some work with producer Kickdrums. Following their collaborative 2014 single "Supersoaker," and the album Nowhere that followed the next year, Duckwrth released his first entirely solo collection, 2016's I'M UUGLY. The album delved into various styles, taking inspiration from both hip-hop sounds Lee enjoyed in his early twenties and the more caustic punk influences that filled his teenage days. With I'M UUGLY establishing Duckwrth's unique style and free-spirited creativity, he kept the momentum going with the release of 2017’s An XTRA UUGLY Mixtape. The following year, in addition to his own solo output, he also secured a spot on the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack, teaming with Shaboozey on "Start A Riot." In 2019, he was joined by guests such as Rico Nasty, Kiana Lede, Medasin, and others for his EP, The Falling Man.
