The Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny), Op. 54, is an orchestrally accompanied choral setting of a poem written by Friedrich Hölderlin and is one of several major choral works written by Johannes Brahms. Brahms began the work in the summer of 1868 at Wilhelmshaven, but it was not completed until May 1871. The delay in completion was largely due to Brahms's indecision as to how the piece should conclude. Hesitant to make a decision, he began work on the Alto Rhapsody, Op. 53, which was completed in 1869 and first performed in 1870.

Schicksalslied is considered to be one of Brahms's best choral works along with Ein deutsches Requiem. In fact, Josef Sittard argues in his book on Brahms, "Had Brahms never written anything but this one work, it would alone have sufficed to rank him with the best masters." The premiere performance of Schicksalslied was given on 18 October 1871 in Karlsruhe, under the direction of Hermann Levi. One of the shortest of Brahms's major choral works, a typical performance lasts around 15 to 16 minutes.

The Symphony No. 3 in C major, Op. 52, by Jean Sibelius is a symphony in three movements composed in 1907. Coming between the romantic intensity of Sibelius's first two symphonies and the more austere complexity of his later symphonies, it is a good-natured, triumphal, and deceptively simple-sounding piece. The symphony's first performance was given by the Helsinki Philharmonic Society, conducted by the composer, on 25 September 1907. In the same concert, his suite from the incidental music to Belshazzar's Feast, Op. 51, was also performed for the first time. It is dedicated to the British composer Granville Bantock an early champion of his work in the UK.

The first recording featured the Finnish conductor Robert Kajanus and the London Symphony Orchestra, for the HMV label in June 1932.

A singer and songwriter whose work reflects love, loss, family, faith, and other universal aspects of the human experience, Aaron Espe was born in Roseau, Minnesota on August 27, 1981. Aaron's mother was a piano teacher, while his father was an electrician. Espe's first experience with making music came from singing in church, and when he was six years old he began studying the piano. Espe added the guitar to his arsenal when he was 14, with his grandfather lending him an instrument and charting a few basic chords. Espe studied English language and literature at the University of North Dakota from 2002 to 2004, though he was also regularly playing local shows by this time. Espe's college career was cut short when he was invited to open a show for the duo Storyhill, and the duo asked him to open a string of Midwest dates for them. As Espe's live appearances and increased touring helped him develop a following, he independently released his first album, 2005's My Whole Life, and Storyhill co-founder Chris Cunningham co-produced Espe's second full-length, 2008's Songs from a Small Town. A seasonal effort, simply titled Christmas Songs, was released in 2008. Espe devoted most of 2009 and 2010 to studying creative writing at Colorado State University, though he continued to perform around the United States and in Ireland, where he developed a following. Espe left Minnesota and relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in 2011, hoping to broaden his career boundaries as a songwriter. Once settled in Music City, Espe began making up for lost time, releasing two albums in 2012, Three and Tennessee Sky. That same year also saw Espe sign a record deal with Nettwerk Records, and he released a five-song EP, Through Frozen Forests, as 2012 was drawing to a close. Espe focused on his career as a tunesmith over the next several years, with one of his songs, "Beyond the Sun," appearing on the television series Nashville, and others heard in the shows The Fosters and Grey's Anatomy. In April 2017 Espe released an EP of covers, Blackwall Way, in anticipation of his first full album for Nettwerk, due later in the year.

With big guitars, direct lyrics, and a pleasantly laid-back attitude, the Los Angeles duo Best Coast play a tuneful version of punk rock that nods toward '60s pop and '90s alt rock informed by the sunny days of their hometown. The duo of guitarist/vocalist Bethany Cosentino and guitarist Bobb Bruno started off small, issuing a string of singles before becoming an internet-fueled sensation. Their albums range from simple Ramones style (their 2010 debut Crazy for You) to arena-ready (2015's California Nights). Their popularity as a live act grew steadily and the musical bond between Cosentino and Bruno held firm. The duo's 2020 album, Always Tomorrow, shows the band still in love with the hooky bubblegum-punk sound they started out with, and stretching out in new areas, like commercial radio pop.

One of the pioneering acts of the fertile European goth metal scene in the 1990s, Germany's Crematory began as a strict death metal unit before adding goth and industrial elements into their arsenal. Formed in 1991, their 1992 demo quickly caught the attention of Massacre Records, which issued the band's debut long-player, Transmigration, the following year. Tours alongside Tiamat, My Dying Bride, and Atrocity helped to expand Crematory's fan base, and they began seeing heavy rotation on MTV Germany, which they responded to by recording their 1996 Nuclear Blast-issued eponymous album completely in their native language. Subsequent LPs like Awake, Act Seven, and Believe saw Crematory moving in a darker, more surreal direction that leaned more heavily on the gothic side of their persona, but despite their enormous popularity, by 2001 they had elected to disband.

Crematory returned in 2004 with the triumphant, techno-metal-fueled Revolution, which was followed closely by a live LP chronicling their reunion tour. They re-signed with Massacre for 2006's Klagebilder, where they would reside until the release of 2014's Antiserum, which was released by SPV/Steamhammer. Monument, the band's 13th studio album, followed in 2016. After world tours and appearances at virtually every major (and some minor) metal festivals, Crematory took a short break and entered the studio in late 2017, emerging with the back-to-metal basics LP Oblivion. Just before the set's release in April 2018, drummer Markus Jüllich called out fans as "lazy asses" on social media, complaining they would rather download or stream recordings rather than pay for physical product or attend shows, claiming that this was an unsustainable practice and that fans, ironically, would be the death of the band. Oblivion made the metal charts and satisfied SPV/Steamhammer's sales requirements. After the tour, Crematory reconvened immediately to record and release Unbroken in March 2020, produced by keyboardist Katrin Jüllich. Despite earning the best critical reviews and early sales figures in years, Crematory, like thousands of other bands, was rendered unable to tour due to the global pandemic.

Newcastle's angular pop quintet Maxïmo Park consist of singer Paul Smith, guitarist Duncan Lloyd, bassist Archie Tiku, keyboardist Lukas Wooller, and drummer Tom English. Like their friends and neighbors the Futureheads and Field Music, Maxïmo Park craft smart, sharply catchy songs inspired by post-punk and new wave legends like the Jam, XTC, Wire, and the Smiths. Lloyd, Tiku, Wooller, and English formed the band as an avant rock, largely instrumental group, taking their name from a meeting place in Cuba for communists. Smith had previously played with the band Me and the Twins and was recommended as the band's new singer by English's girlfriend, who heard him singing Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious" at a karaoke night. Maxïmo Park issued their debut 7", The Coast Is Always Changing/The Night I Lost My Head, in 2004; it caught the ears of Warp Records, which despite being a mostly electronic label signed them and released their second single, "Apply Some Pressure," early in 2005. It made the Top 20 in the U.K.'s national charts. At that time, Warp also released the Apply Some Pressure EP, which featured tracks from both of the band's singles, in the U.S.

Maxïmo Park also finished recording their debut album with producer Paul Epworth (who also worked with Bloc Party and Babyshambles) that winter and spent the spring touring the U.K., Japan, and the U.S., making an appearance at South by Southwest. The "Graffiti" single heralded the arrival of the band's full-length debut, A Certain Trigger, late that spring. More tours of the U.S. and U.K., including gigs at Glastonbury and Reading, kept the band busy that summer. Early in 2006, the B-sides collection Missing Songs was released; Maxïmo Park also maintained their hectic touring schedule and returned to the studio late that year, teaming with producer Gil Norton. Our Earthly Pleasures arrived in spring 2007. For 2009's Quicken the Heart, Maxïmo Park ventured to Los Angeles to record with producer Nick Launay, who gave the songs a slightly rawer yet still danceable sound. In 2010, the band took a break from its near-constant recording and touring, during which time Smith made the solo album Margins. The band's hiatus continued until 2012, when Maxïmo Park resurfaced with The National Health, a harder-hitting, politicized effort produced by Gil Norton. For 2014's more intimate, electronic-driven Too Much Information, the band recruited the Invisible's Dave Okumu and Field Music's David and Peter Brewis as collaborators. After Smith worked with the Brewis brothers on a pair of solo albums (2014's Frozen by Sight and the following year's Contradictions), Maxïmo Park returned in 2017 with Risk to Exist. Recorded at Wilco's Loft studio in Chicago and featuring backing vocals from Low's Mimi Parker, the band's sixth album reflected the turbulent times in which it was recorded. Ahead of the album's April release, the album's title track was released as a single that benefitted the refugee charity Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS).
