MC and producer Kid Ink -- born Brian Todd Collins in Los Angeles and formerly known as Rockstar -- rose steadily by releasing a series of four mixtapes during 2010 and 2011. XXL magazine was impressed enough to list him beside the likes of Danny Brown and Macklemore in its Freshman Class feature for 2012. That June, Kid Ink released Up & Away, his first proper studio album, via Tha Alumni. Although it featured beats from several producers -- including Ned Cameron, Cardiak, Jahlil Beats, and the Amazinz -- there were no guest verses, and therefore no disruptions in Kid Ink's nonchalant flow. It peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart and reached number three on the publication's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

After another mixtape, he signed to major-label RCA and released his second effort, My Own Lane, in 2014. Tyga, Chris Brown, and Pusha-T all made guest appearances. By September of 2014, the single "Body Language" (featuring Usher and Tinashe) announced the release of Kid Ink's third album, Full Speed. It appeared in February 2015 and was followed later in the year by the mixtape Summer in the Winter. In 2016, Kid Ink issued RSS2, the sequel to his 2012 mixtape Rocketshipshawty. The spring of 2017 saw the release of his second EP, 7 Series, which features guest spots from Ty Dolla $ign, 2 Chainz, and Starrah. The tropical-tinged single "Tell Somebody" arrived in January 2018, soon followed by "One Time," "Woop Woop," and "Big Deal." Another single, "Champion," appeared in August 2019. Kid Ink parted ways with RCA and went independent in early 2020. That spring, he teamed up with Rory Fresco for the single "Fly 2 Mars."

Although many associate hard rock from Los Angeles in the early '80s as all glossed up and pop-based (Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Quiet Riot, etc.), there were a select few true metal bands to emerge from the same locale, such as Armored Saint. Formed in 1982 and originally comprising John Bush (vocals), David Pritchard (guitar), Phil Sandoval (guitar), Joey Vera (bass), and Gonzo Sandoval (drums, brother of Phil), the group specialized in a style of straight-ahead metal that was compared to such New Wave of British Heavy Metal acts as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Saxon, among others. The quintet issued a three-track self-titled EP on the Metal Blade label in 1983 before signing on with Chrysalis. They put out such underappreciated releases as 1984's March of the Saint, 1985's Delirious Nomad, and 1987's Raising Fear, and built a fanatical following in their native region, but failed to break through to the big time elsewhere.

Shortly after a switch back to the Metal Blade label in the late '80s, Armored Saint issued their first live recording, 1989's Saints Will Conquer, but bad news was lurking right around the corner. Founding guitarist Pritchard was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away in 1990. The group pressed on (with newcomer Jeff Duncan taking Pritchard's spot in the lineup), issuing Symbol of Salvation in 1991. But the band decided to call it a day a year later when Bush accepted an invitation to join New York thrash metallists Anthrax. By the late '90s, Armored Saint decided to reunite once more and Bush remained a member of Anthrax and Armored Saint simultaneously (Vera was also doing double duty, as he'd become a member of prog-metallists Fates Warning). The newly re-formed outfit issued an all-new recording in 2000, Revelation, while a double-disc anthology, Nod to the Old School, surfaced a year later. A decade later in 2010, the band released La Raza, their sixth full-length studio album, on Metal Blade, followed in 2015 by Win Hands Down. In 2017, the band issued the PledgeMusic-funded Carpe Noctum, a concert LP recorded at the band's 2015 Wacken festival set, as well as their headlining show in Aschaffenburg, Germany.

"Mad World" is a 1982 song by the British band Tears for Fears. Written by Roland Orzabal and sung by bassist Curt Smith, it was the band's third single release and first chart hit, reaching number 3 on the UK Singles Chart in November 1982. Both "Mad World" and its B-side, "Ideas as Opiates", appeared on the band's debut LP The Hurting (1983). The single was also an international success, reaching the Top 40 in several countries in 1982-83.

"Mad World" has since been covered by various artists, most notably by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules for the soundtrack of the film Donnie Darko in 2001. This version was a UK number one hit and won Orzabal his second Ivor Novello Award in 2003.

The artistic development of Devonté Hynes, the singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer known foremost as Blood Orange, has been marked by continuous diversification and exploration. After establishing himself in the dance-punk band Test Icicles and as Lightspeed Champion, Hynes changed course again as Blood Orange. Since debuting the project with Coastal Grooves (2011), Hynes has developed a progressive mixture of several styles including soul, funk, post-punk, and chillwave, all the while incorporating lyrical themes of identity, sexuality, belonging, and spirituality, among other issues that have the shaped his existence and those of his peers. Despite enlisting extensive supporting casts on later albums Cupid Deluxe (2013), Freetown Sound (2016), and Negro Swan (2018), all of which registered on Billboard's R&B and independent charts, Hynes' output has been resolutely individualist and deeply personal. Concurrent with Blood Orange's evolution as a collaborative outlet, Hynes himself has been sought out by a varied multitude of fellow artists such as Sky Ferreira, Solange, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Philip Glass. He has also provided music for films (Palo Alto, Queen & Slim), and has branched out into classical composition (Fields, performed by Third Coast Percussion).

Hynes' name popped up on releases from Blondie, HAIM, A$AP Rocky, and Mac Miller into the latter half of 2018. During this period, Hynes also performed with Philip Glass at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and with a little help from Diddy, Project Pat, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and A$AP Rocky, put together the alternately comforting and startling Negro Swan. Issued in August 2018, it became the third consecutive Blood Orange LP to chart on Billboard's R&B and independent listings, peaking in the U.K. at number 64. Hynes' appearances on Empress Of's Us and Mariah Carey's Caution preceded a Blood Orange mixtape, Angel's Pulse, issued in July 2019. Later in the year, Hynes contributed to Danny Brown's uknowhatimsayin¿, provided music for the romantic crime drama Queen & Slim, and composed the material performed by Third Coast Percussion on Fields.

Walter about the track;
“Ordinary Madness It about me taking a look at myself and being brutally honest with myself about my own humanity and my own flaws. It's something that is pretty relatable to everybody. We all have fears and anger and self-doubt. It’s really an examination of that.”

Follow Walter Trout

With a raw, biting, overdriven, tone, flawless technique, and relentless energy, Walter Trout is among the world's most formidable blues guitarists. His high profile stints with Canned Heat and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in the 1980s resulted from a decade of experience previous backing blues and R&B performers including Joe Tex, Percy Mayfield, Big Mama Thornton, Lowell Fulsom, and John Lee Hooker. After leaving Mayall's employ in 1989, Trout led his own bands and started recording as a bandleader. He issued acclaimed early albums for European labels including Telling Stories in 1991 and Transition in 1992. Issued in the U.S. 1994's Tellin' Stories for RCA/Silvertone imprint drew critical notice, while his fortunes in Europe were far greater. 2000’s Live Trout, was his first charting album Stateside. By the time he issued 2009's Unspoiled By Progress, his offerings regularly notched spots in the Blues Albums top ten. After the 2013 U.S. issue of Luther's Blues: A Tribute To Luther Allison peaked at four, Trout was sidelined with liver cirrhosis and Hepatitis C; he required an organ transplant. During recuperation he penned Rescued From Reality: The Life and Times of Walter Trout with journalist Henry Yates. He returned with 2015’s number two charting Battle Scars, and resumed touring--his first gig was a blues festival at the Royal Albert Hall. 2017’s We’re All In This Together marked his first number one outing, a run he continued with Survivor Blues two years later.

In early 2020, Trout and his band entered Robbie Krieger's private studio and proceeded to shake things up. While the proceedings retained his blues origins, Trout also showcased the influence that songwriters such as John Lennon, Neil Young and Bob Dylan had on him. Employing lyrics that honestly delved into past issues with substances, mental health problems and the loneliness of the road, Trout showcased his inner songwriter alongside the guitarist. Using all vintage guitar, he delivered tracks based in roots rock, psychedelia, folk, and modern Chicago blues. Entitled Ordinary Madness, he completed the album just days before the world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic; it was released by Provogue in August.

“Better Distractions” by Faye Webster

Directed & Produced by Matt Swinsky & Eat Humans

Edited by Matt Swinsky

Starring Faye Webster, Noor Khan and Emorie Roberts

Atlanta-based indie singer/songwriter Faye Webster began writing rustic, country-tinged songs at age 14, but found an unlikely entry point into the music industry as part of a rap collective. While singing hooks on tracks for rappers and blooming as a photographer, Webster continued honing her own songcraft. A self-titled debut saw the light of day in 2017, showcasing her vulnerable, introspective narratives and playful character.

Webster was raised in Atlanta, Georgia in a musical family; her grandfather was a bluegrass guitarist in Texas, her mother was a former guitarist and fiddle player, and her oldest brother played in a rock band in high school. Webster herself began writing songs and performing as a teenager. In high school, she was part of rap collective PSA, a group of friends who collaborated and served as mutual sources of encouragement. She self-released her first album, a rustic set of Americana called Run & Tell, in 2013 at the age of 16. Webster met rapper Ethereal during her senior year and was introduced to his label, Awful Records.

Upon graduation, Webster enrolled at Belmont University in Nashville with the intention of studying either songwriting or graphic design. However, missing the particular creative scene and diversity of Atlanta, she returned home before finishing her freshman year. While there, a photography class and the Christmas gift of a camera led to her photographing friends on weekend trips home, some of whom were embarking on music careers of their own. Inspired by the work of Brooklyn-based artist Kehinde Wiley, she incorporated background patterns into her portraits, and was soon in demand as a music photographer, shooting hip-hop artists including DRAM, Killer Mike, and former classmate Lil Yachty while still in her teens. Making an effort to prioritize her music, she signed with Awful Records, which released her second album in 2017. Titled Faye Webster, it introduced a more sophisticated, confessional indie folk She followed up two years later with Atlanta Millionaires Club. Released on Secretly Canadian, the album bounded between modes of lush R&B and pedal-steel heavy indie folk.

Born in Nigeria and growing up in England, singer/songwriter Jacob Banks crafts his songs around his rich baritone voice, drawing from blues, R&B, reggae, and elements of hip-hop for his multi-layered productions. Following a series of well-received EPs and song placements in games, film, and television, Banks released his first proper studio album with 2018's Village, released on Interscope Records.

While growing up, Jacob Banks was encouraged by a close friend to pursue a career in music, following the many local gigs that the pair attended. When his friend passed away in 2011, Banks sang at his funeral and subsequently focused his attention on ensuring that a wide audience heard his music. In 2012, a regional category at the MOBO UnSung awards was only one of a handful of competitions that he was successful in that year. By the time 2013 came around, he had already recorded his debut EP and supported East London hip-hop artist Plan B. Following the release of the EP The Monologue in January, he began to receive regular airplay on mainstream U.K. radio and was also asked to support Emeli Sandé on her spring 2013 tour. By the summer his soulful vocals appeared on Wretch 32's minor U.K. hit "Doing OK," and the pair planned to work on further material. Two years later, he delivered the EP The Paradox, which included the single "Monster," featuring Avelino. Also around this time, Banks guested on several tracks, appearing on Sigma's "Redemption" and SeeB's "What Do You Love?" In 2016, he released the single "Monster 2.0," featuring Boogie. The following year, he returned with the Boy Who Cried Freedom EP. This release included the single "Unholy War" which would be used in numerous games and television shows as well as "Chainsmoking," which would reappear on debut studio album Village when it arrived in late 2018. The high-definition production of the album captured the full scope of Banks' many muses and included guest appearances from Bibi Bourelly, Seinabo Sey, and NANA.

Canadian quartet Dizzy spin an ethereal blend of dream pop that they debuted on 2018's Baby Teeth, which won a Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year. They returned in 2020 with sophomore set The Sun and Her Scorch.

Formed in Oshawa, Ontario, the initial seeds of the group were planted in the mid-2010s by vocalist Katie Munshaw and guitarist/drummer Charlie Spencer, who met in high school math class and collaborated as a folksy acoustic duo. Later, Spencer's brothers, guitarist Alex and bassist Mackenzie, were recruited to form the founding incarnation of Dizzy, whose indie pop style was influenced by a wide range of artists including London Grammar, Radiohead, Stars, and Alvvays. Sprouting from suburban boredom and the desire to escape, they began writing material that ended up on their debut album, Baby Teeth (Royal Mountain Records), which landed in the summer of 2018. Produced by Damian Taylor (Björk, Arcade Fire, the Killers), Baby Teeth featured the Lorde-esque singles "Stars and Moons," "Pretty Thing," and "Swim." At the 2019 Juno Awards, the group were nominated for Breakthrough Group and Alternative Album of the Year, winning the latter prize. Returning to the studio for their follow-up, they sated fans with double A-side Heavy/Twist before rolling out the singles "Sunflower," "The Magician," and "Roman Candles" from their sophomore LP, The Sun and Her Scorch, which landed in the summer of 2020.

Dublin-based modern rock quartet Kodaline specialize in soaring, radio-ready guitar rock that's drawn comparisons to Coldplay, Keane, U2, and Oasis.

Formed in the working-class town of Swords, Ireland, around the talents of Steve Garrigan, Vinnie May, Jr., Jason Boland, and Mark Prendergast, the band released an eponymous EP in 2012, with plans to unleash a full-length outing the following year. At the end of the 2012, Kodaline were shortlisted for the BBC's Sound of 2013, but they were beaten to the top spot by HAIM. The group issued their debut album, In a Perfect World, in June 2013, which was preceded by the singles "High Hopes" and "Love Like This." The record was a major success in Ireland, going platinum twice, and it also did well in Britain (it peaked at three and went gold) as well as portions of Europe. Kodaline's second album, Coming Up for Air, followed in early 2015. The LP peaked at number four on the U.K. charts and spawned the singles "The One" and "Honest." In the summer of 2017, the band returned with the single "Brother" and the I Wouldn't Be EP. The next year, they issued the single "Follow Your Fire," which landed on their pop-leaning third full-length, Politics of Living, again topping the Irish charts. Kodaline's output remained steady, first with the concert album Live from Irving Plaza, NYC, 4 Dec 2018, followed in 2020 by their fourth album, One Day at a Time, a more stripped-down, back-to-basics, set that bassist Boland produced himself.

Lonely the Brave formed in Cambridge, U.K. in 2009 when vocalist David Jakes, guitarist Mark Trotter, bassist Andrew Bushen, and drummer Gavin Edgeley all fell together after their respective bands either split or ended. With a love of groups such as Pearl Jam and the National forming their bond, the four-piece set about recording and touring straightaway. A self-released EP, Backroads, appeared in 2010 and a tour of the U.K. followed, seeing them receiving praise for their intense live performances. Building their following organically, the group soon started to earn plaudits from the likes of Kerrang! magazine and BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, and in 2013 announced that they had signed to Hassle Records. A re-recorded version of Backroads was released in the October of that year after a summer of festival gigs, including a performance at the prestigious Reading Festival and support slots with the likes of the Deftones and Bruce Springsteen. Entering the studio with Mark Williams at the end of 2013, the group set about recording their debut album, The Day's War. While recording as a four-piece, the group realized that playing the songs live would need an extra guitarist, and Ross Smithwick joined the band in early 2014. With the album originally scheduled for a June release, it was pushed back after the group announced that they had signed an international deal with Columbia Records. After a three-month delay, The Day's War was released, entering the U.K Top 20 album chart while garnering positive reviews across the board. The band returned to the studio in 2015 with producer Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys, M.I.A.) to record their sophomore release, Things Will Matter. Preceded by the singles "Black Mire" and "What If You Fall In," the album was slated for an early 2016 release. The EP Diamond Days was released in 2017.

On 11 March 2018 the band announced, via a heart felt email to fans, that David Jakes would be leaving for mental health reasons. In August 2018, he was subsequently replaced by Jack Bennett. In April 2020 the band released their first material with Bennett on Easy Life Records; the single “Bound” was premiered on BBC Radio One.

Establishing himself with the explosive "Wooo Walk" dance, New York's Sosa Geek built his brand in the late 2010s and early 2020s with a frenetic style of drill. Working alongside friends and collaborators Fivio Foreign and Pop Smoke, the rapper had his biggest placement to date alongside Drake on 2020's Dark Lane Demo Tapes.

Born and raised in Brownsville, New York, rapper Sosa Geek found his place as part of New York's late-2010s and early-2020s drill scene. Affiliated with New York's Woo faction, the rapper's first big break came with "Wooo Walk," a dance-based collaboration between Geek, Rah Swish, Fetty Luchiano, and Young Costamado. From here, the rapper built a firm foundation in drill, anchoring himself in the scene with tracks like "Geek Shyt" and "I Don't Know." The second major milestone of the rapper's career came with an unexpected collaboration; Toronto superstar Drake enlisted both Sosa Geek and close associate Fivio Foreign for 2020's "Demons," which landed on his Dark Lane Demo Tapes mixtape.

Kayla Brianna Smith, known as Kayla Brianna, is a pop-oriented contemporary R&B vocalist inspired by the likes of Janet Jackson and Aaliyah. Since debuting in the early 2010s on major-label Interscope, she has recorded independently with the likes of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Rich Homie Quan, and Dreezy, and has released Girl Talk (2019), her slick and assured first album.

A granddaughter of Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Gerry Goffin, and daughter of former professional basketball player Kenny Smith, Kayla Brianna Smith was discovered by industry veteran Vincent Herbert (Lady Gaga, Tamar Braxton) and signed to Interscope. Smith toured with Mindless Behavior and Jacob Latimore and recorded some material, including the 2012 single "Bombs Away" and the 2013 Meek Mill collaboration "I Got That," while with the label. She subsequently went independent and increased her public profile on the scripted reality television series Meet the Smiths. A cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, was released in 2014. The following year, she made her Billboard chart debut with "Do You Remember," a Rich Homie Quan collaboration that registered on the publication's R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. Scattered recordings throughout 2018, including singles featuring YFN Lucci and Dreezy, led to the 2019 release of the full-length Girl Talk.
