Rob Mazurek — Exploding Star Orchestra's "The Careening Prism Within (Parable 43)" from the album 'Dimensional Stardust,' due November 20 on International Anthem / Nonesuch Records: https://ift.tt/3j73caF

Film by Mikel Patrick Avery

For his 2020 album with Exploding Star Orchestra, 'Dimensional Stardust,' Rob Mazurek arranged his pieces for eleven musicians—Nicole Mitchell, Jeff Parker, Jaimie Branch, Joel Ross, Mikel Patrick Avery, Tomeka Reid, Chad Taylor, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Macie Stewart, Angelica Sanchez, and John Herndon—and commissioned his long-time lyrics collaborator Damon Locks to draft original texts for the songs. The album recalls an array of Mazurek’s symphonic influences, from Béla Bartók to Morton Feldman to Gil Evans to Sun Ra to Pedro Santos to Bill Dixon to The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Opting to focus on tight ensemble orchestration over passages of open improvisation, he distills an orchestra of explosive improvisers into a graceful group exercise in melodic minimalism.

A punishing, all-female thrash trio based out of São Paulo, Brazil, Nervosa was founded in 2010 around the talents of bassist/vocalist Fernanda Lira, guitarist/backing vocalist Prika Amaral, and drummer Pitchu Ferraz. In 2012, the band issued a video for debut single "Masked Betrayer," which became a YouTube hit and caught the eyes and ears of Napalm Records. A deal was signed and the band headed into the studio to record their first EP, Time of Death, which arrived later that year. During this time, Nervosa was sharing the stage with a bevy of hard-hitting contemporaries, including Exodus, Raven, D.R.I., Destruction, Grave, Samael, and Artillery. In 2014, the band released their first full-length outing, Victim of Yourself, followed by their sophomore studio long-player, Agony, in 2016.

Royal Bliss - "Royal Bliss (Album stream)" [Rock & Alternative, Album Streams]

Genre : Rock & Alternative, Album Streams
Description : Self-described crafters of "heartland rock," hard rock band Royal Bliss formed in 1997 in Salt Lake City, Utah when guitarist Chris Harding met singer Neal Middleton at a Middleton solo gig. The band played and toured constantly in the Salt Lake area, building a solid fan base, finally settling on a lineup that included Middleton on vocals, Harding, and Taylor Richards on guitar, Jake Smith on drums, and Tommy Gunn on bass.

The group released the seven-song CD Free Again in 1998, following it up with the EP Gimmie a Little Bliss in 1999 and the full-length Old's Cool in 2001. Also appearing in 2001 was King Size, which included what would become several fan favorites. After the Chaos was issued in 2005, and again in modified form in 2006 as After the Chaos II. Thanks to a national distribution deal and strong sales, Royal Bliss caught the attention of Capitol Records, which released Life In-Between as part of a joint collaboration between Merovingian Music and Caroline Records in 2009. It cracked the Billboard 200, a first for the band. That same year saw the EP Live and Acoustic in Studio A and a holiday single called "I Just Want You (For Christmas)." The group's next two full-length studio albums, 2012's Waiting Out the Storm and 2014's Chasing the Sun, were released on their own Air Castle label.

The band had been touring steadily over the years and underwent some lineup changes before they relocated to Nashville, Tennessee for their next record and a fresh start of sorts. Invigorated by the finger-picking flair of their newest member, guitar and banjo player Sean Hennesy, Royal Bliss' next release incorporated a stronger country influence without letting up on their hard rock delivery. Self-released in 2016, The Truth EP featured the lineup of Middleton, Richards, Smith, Hennesy, and bassist Dwayne Crawford.

U.K. indie quartet Sundara Karma emerged in the mid-2010s with a bright, shimmering sound and great expectations. After riding a succession of singles to a deal with RCA Records, the Reading-based band issued a pair of EPs and a 2017 full-length debut, Youth Is Only Ever Fun in Retrospect, earning comparisons to bands like Arcade Fire and the Maccabees. A heavy international touring schedule soon made way for a 2019 follow-up, Ulfilas' Alphabet.

Though their name may be of Hindu/Buddhist origin, the band arrived emitting pure waves of pop, beginning with the 2013 single "Freshbloom," followed a year later by "Indigo Puff" and "Cold Heaven." Longtime friends Oscar Lulu (vocals, guitar), Ally Baty (guitar), Dom Cordell (bass), and Haydn Evans soon earned themselves a deal with RCA imprint Chess Club Records, and after a pair of well-received 2015 EPs, they completed work on their debut album, Youth Is Only Ever Fun in Retrospect. The Larry Hibbitt-produced LP was released in January 2017, after which the band spent the year touring to promote the effort, including support slots for Bastille and Two Door Cinema Club. The tour also featured multiple performances across Europe as well as an appearance at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. After returning home, Sundara Karma got to work writing and recording their sophomore effort. They spent 2018 in the studio and the release -- titled Ulfilas' Alphabet -- arrived in early 2019. The LP was produced with Stuart Price (Pet Shop Boys, New Order) and included the singles "One Last Night on This Earth" and "Higher States."

Ryde, Isle of Wight-based punk band Grade 2 stay true to the roots of punk, aligning with Oi! in style and approach.

The band, consisting of Jack Chatfield (guitar/vocals), Sid Ryan (bass/vocals), and Jacob Hull (drums) formed in 2013 when they were 15, originally playing covers of the Stranglers and the Jam in local pubs. They eventually graduated to writing original material and signed to Contra Records. It took them a while to write and record their debut album, Mainstream View, which appeared in 2016, but they quickly followed their initial release with 2017's Break the Routine. After two albums, they toured steadily, meeting and befriending Lars Fredriksen (Rancid) along the way. He appreciated their sound enough to put them in touch with bandmate Tim Armstrong, who signed them to Hellcat Records and produced their third album, 2019's Graveyard Island.

“They say barbwire was the death knell of the cowboy. It was the end of the open range and the end of open pastures. Before the cowboys, for time immemorial, the indigenous peoples of the Americas looked to the earth as their spiritual authority. They did not parcel the earth any more than Christians, Muslims, or the Jewish faith would parcel out God. That would be sacrilege. But along came the colonists and they did just that. After the genocide of the indigenous peoples, once our white picket fences and barbwire and border walls were erected, the ancestors of the colonists made a lot of technological progress. We invented cars, skyscrapers, cheeseburgers, and smartphones! And yet now, at the dawn of the 21st century, mother earth is reacting to the past few hundred years of neglect. The earth is sending out pandemics, fires, hurricanes, and so on. The indigenous say that it’s the earth’s immune system calibrating itself. The indigenous people of the Americas, and the rest of the world, have stewarded their sacred planet for tens of thousands of years of recorded history--likely more. The PTM Foundation turns a conscious heart to the ancestral youth of the indigenous elders to shepherd our sacred planet and peoples through this time of difficulty.

The PTM Foundation is a platform for artistic collaboration between materialist culture, the arts, and indigenous paradigms. For the video for “Who’s Gonna Stop Me” we created a collaboration between indigenous artists, friends, artistic collaborators, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, and Indigenous organizations to explore the possibilities of collaboration in this new time. To us ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic has always been a figure of playful boundary-breaking. His work makes us take less seriously, the things that we take so seriously, like what’s cool, or what’s trendy. ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic has been an inspiration for Portugal The Man since their inception until now. In the tradition of the indigenous cultures of the western North American territories, the Coyote represents the trickster and the maker of new worlds. The trickster is an archetype that can be found in nearly all indigenous and ancient cultures; the trickster not only is playful and a comedian but through their playfulness, they connect people. PTM Foundation sees music and art as a similar tool to make new connections and we consider this video to be the beginning of a campaign of many collaborations to come. PTM Foundation strives to forge bridges between the materialist contemporary culture in which we are immersed and the indigenous stewards to whom we strive to give a larger voice.”

With their peculiar name and remote place of origin, Alaskan experimental indie pop band Portugal. The Man are an unlikely success story. After heading southward to the musical hub of Portland, Oregon, the group -- co-founded by the duo of John Gourley and Zach Carothers -- delivered a series of unique, artfully crafted independent albums throughout the late 2000s, touring hard and eventually signing a deal with Atlantic in 2010. The band's diligence paid off during their major-label tenure with each subsequent album gaining them a wider fan base and increased acclaim. On 2013's Evil Friends, they forged a collaboration with producer Danger Mouse, who again helped out on the group's politically driven eighth album, 2017's Woodstock, which yielded the Grammy-winning hit single "Feel It Still."

"Universal Soldier" is a song written and recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. The song was originally released on Sainte-Marie's debut album It's My Way! in 1964. "Universal Soldier" was not an immediate popular hit at the time of its release, but it did garner attention within the contemporary folk music community. It became a hit a year later when Donovan covered it, as did Glen Campbell. Sainte-Marie said of the song: "I wrote 'Universal Soldier' in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It's about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all."

Sainte-Marie has said she approached writing the song from the perspective of a student writing an essay for a professor who didn't see eye-to-eye with her perspective, hoping to present him with a different point of view.

By 1965, the song had caught the attention of budding folk singer Donovan, who recorded it using a similar arrangement to Buffy Sainte-Marie's original recording. In Donovan's version, Dachau became Liebau (Lubawka, Poland), a training center for Hitler Youth. Donovan's recording was released on an EP titled The Universal Soldier in the United Kingdom (August 15, 1965). The EP continued Donovan's run of high charting releases in the UK by reaching No. 5 on the charts. The tracks on the EP are "Universal Soldier"; "The Ballad of a Crystal Man" b/w "Do You Hear Me Now?" (Bert Jansch); "The War Drags On" (Mick Softley).

The lack of interest in the EP format within the United States led Hickory Records to release the song as a single in September 1965. Donovan's cover of "Universal Soldier" was backed with another track from the British EP: Bert Jansch's "Do You Hear Me Now?". Donovan's US release of "Universal Soldier" also became a hit, charting higher than his previous single "Colours" and ultimately reaching #53 on the Billboard charts. This success led Hickory Records to include the song on the United States release of Donovan's second album, Fairytale, replacing a cover of Bert Jansch's "Oh Deed I Do".

Sainte-Marie was glad that Donovan's success with this song got more people to hear it.
