Don Dixon - "Praying Mantis" [Rock & Alternative]

Praying Mantis

"Praying Mantis" music video by Don Dixon
Added: 19-10-2020
Genre : Rock & Alternative
Description : Don Dixon - Praying Mantis

from 1985's "Most of the Girls Like to Dance But Only Some of the Boys Like To"

-

Don Dixon (born December 13, 1950) is a record producer, songwriter, musician, bass guitarist, and very occasional actor. Dixon is considered to be one of the key producers of what is called the jangle pop movement of the early 1980s.

Don Dixon was born in Lancaster, South Carolina. He learned guitar at age 13, and made his first recording as a jazz bassist at age 15. He attended the University of North Carolina, where his roommate was the writer Bruce Brooks.

Dixon and several fellow UNC freshmen formed the band Arrogance, who recorded six albums and inspired others in the North Carolina music scene. Dixon spent thirteen years as a member, and learned the essence of record production during this time.

Dixon was still playing with Arrogance in 1982 when Mitch Easter asked him to co-produce R.E.M.'s debut LP Murmur and their 1984 follow-up LP Reckoning (both Dixon and Easter are credited in the Reckoning liner notes as "Machinists").

Dixon then spent several years producing the work of artists including Chris Stamey (formerly of The dB's), The Smithereens, Fetchin Bones, Richard Barone, Guadalcanal Diary and Marshall Crenshaw. Considered to be a highlight of this period was Tommy Keene's Run Now EP.

Working with Mitch Easter at Fidelitorium Recordings in Kernersville, NC, Dixon produced Mixed Reality, the sixth studio album by American alternative rock band Gin Blossoms. It was released on June 15, 2018, on Cleopatra Records.

In 1985, success as a producer led to Dixon's solo debut Most of the Girls Like to Dance But Only Some of the Boys Like To, a collection of early demos. This album reflected his love of classic pop melodies and spiky, Nick Lowe-inspired word play.

„Leider konnte ich die abgefahrene Location gar nicht so genießen, weil ich mich auf´s Spielen konzentrieren musste...“, sagt High Fighter - Bassist Constantin nach dem schweißtreibenden Gig grinsend in die Rockpalast-Kamera. Dabei hätte sich der Blick über das monströse Gelände des ehemaligen Thyssen Werks gelohnt. Seit 1985 steht die Eisenproduktion hier still.

Dusty Springfield - "How Can I Be Sure (TopPop)" [Pop]

How Can I Be Sure (TopPop)

"How Can I Be Sure (TopPop)" music video by Dusty Springfield
Added: 19-10-2020
Genre : Pop
Description : Dusty Springfield - How Can I Be Sure • TopPop

Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien OBE (16 April 1939 – 2 March 1999), professionally known as Dusty Springfield, was an English pop singer and record producer whose career extended from the late 1950s to the 1990s. With her distinctive mezzo-soprano sound, she was an important singer of blue-eyed soul and at her peak was one of the most successful British female performers, with six top 20 singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 and sixteen on the UK Singles Chart from 1963 to 1989. She is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and UK Music Hall of Fame. International polls have named Springfield among the best female rock artists of all time. Her image, supported by a peroxide blonde bouffant hairstyle, evening gowns, and heavy make-up, as well as her flamboyant performances, made her an icon of the Swinging Sixties.

This performance was part of a Dutch tv-special 'Just Dusty' first broadcast by TROS tv on 4 February 1971.

Broadcast date: February 4, 1971

-

"How Can I Be Sure" is a popular song written by Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, and originally recorded by The Young Rascals for their 1967 album Groovin' with a single release in August 1967 affording the group their fourth Top 10 hit peaking at #4.

"How Can I Be Sure" was covered by British singer Dusty Springfield and released as a non-LP single in September 1970. It was rumoured that this recording and single release may have been prompted by her well received performance of the song on the Des O'Connor Show in May 1970. Dusty was hopeful that this single would fare better than her then-recent American recordings which were met with relative indifference in the UK (aside from the US and UK Top 10 hit "Son of a Preacher Man").

Despite several promotional television and radio appearances and glowing reviews from the press, the single only spent one week in the UK Top 40 and only four weeks total on the chart. The song was issued specifically for the British market and would not be issued in America until the release of The Dusty Springfield Anthology in 1997.

Weird and wild enough to be associated with Soulja Boy, Andy Milonakis, O.G. Ron C., and Diplo's Mad Decent crew, Houston rapper Riff Raff first came on the scene in 2009 as a contestant on MTV's From G's to Gents, a competitive reality series where hardcore ballers tried to become sophisticates. According to OutKast associate and the show's host Fonzworth Bentley, Riff Raff was "beyond" his help, but "crazy like a fox" was another way to think of it, as the rapper had the MTV logo tattooed on his neck, thus allowing him to use the network's name legally on his MTV Riff Raff mixtapes, his posts to video-sharing sites, and all his free tracks uploaded to social media. Thanks to Riff Raff mentioning his phone number in his songs, he was contacted by like-minded rapper Dirt Nasty, along with Andy Milonakis, for some collaborative tracks that landed beginning in 2010, and by 2011 he was signed to Soulja Boy's label and production house, S.O.D. Money Gang Inc. The relationship didn't last long, as Riff Raff signed with Diplo's Mad Decent label in 2012 and issued his Birth of an Icon mixtape. The tape featured early hits like "Jose Canseco" and "Jody Highroller," along with the Action Bronson team-up "Bird on a Wire." He also teamed up with Milonakis and Nasty in 2012 for the project and album Three Loco, while 2013 saw him partner with DollaBillGates for the album Jumpin Out the Gym. In 2014, he went back to his solo career with the Mad Decent release Neon Icon. The album featured the singles "How to Be the Man" and "Tip Toe Wing in My Jawwdinz," and in 2015 it was remixed by DJ O.G. Ron C. for the release Purple Icon: Chopped Not Slopped. Released by the MC's own label, Neon Nation, Peach Panther followed in 2016. The album featured the single "Carlos Slim," the Gucci Mane and Danny Brown collaboration "I Drive By," and plenty of beats from the Atlanta production crew 808 Mafia. Later that year, he and DJ Afterthought released the highly collaborative Balloween, which featured guest spots from Skepta, Quavo, DJ Paul, and many others. Maintaining his prolific run, Riff Raff followed up in early 2017 with the Aquaberry Aquarius mixtape and the full-length LP, The White West. A collaborative album with DJ Afterthought, Cool Blue Jewels, kicked off 2018, with Alcoholic Alligator following just a few months later.

His signature sound might be a simple "Yeahhhh Yeahhhhh Yeahhhh" at the end of his lines, but YFN Lucci is a strong, versatile lyricist, one who made his official debut at the age of 17 and has since gone on to become a fixture on the Billboard 200 via albums like Long Live Nut (2017) and Ray Ray from Summerhill (2018).

The Atlanta MC was born Rayshawn Bennett and began rapping when he was 16. A year later, he was recruited by Johnny Cinco for two appearances on 2014's John Popi mixtape. He joined TIG that same year, and by the end of 2014 the label had released his debut mixtape, Wish Me Well. Wish Me Well, Vol. 2 followed in 2016 and featured guest appearances from Migos, Plies, and Johnny Cinco. In April 2017, Lucci released his debut EP, Long Live Nut, which made a strong showing at number 27 on the Billboard 200. He kicked off 2018 with the release of the Meek Mill-featuring "Street Kings." Second EP Freda's Son appeared in February, and full-length Ray Ray from Summerhill dropped the following month, subsequently becoming the rapper's first Top 20-charting release. Later that December, Lucci issued the single "Double Up," which featured Rich the Kid. In 2019, Lucci released the Gangsta Grillz mixtape 650Luc, which included a Trey Songz-assisted single, "All Night Long." Before the end of the year, he returned with the HIStory mixtape. The project included multiple contributions from vocalist Bigga Rankin as well as an appearance from City Girls.

Description : Elton John - Sartorial Eloquence

This 1980 track from ‘21 at 33’ followed Elton’s Top 10 hit ‘Little Jeannie’. Sartorial Eloquence was written with new wave singer Tom Robinson after they were introduced by Peter Gabriel at a charity concert in 1978. The title wasn’t favoured by Elton’s US record company who insisted on renaming it ‘Don’t Ya Wanna Play This Game No More’ somewhat losing the poetic quality.

Sartorial Eloquence features on the upcoming Elton: Jewel Box, out November 13th.

Finnish singer/songwriter Bobby Oroza is a throwback performer known for his dusky brand of '60s soul and R&B-influenced pop.

This LoveA native of Helsinki, Oroza grew up in a musical family of Bolivian and Finnish descent. He became interested in music at a young age while at family functions where he was exposed to Latin music, Motown, and jazz, as well as South American folk and Nuyorican salsa. He started playing guitar and drums, and eventually began performing in high school. While still a teenager, he traveled to Santiago de Cuba where he studied percussion and singing. Returning home, he embarked on a production and recording career, playing in various bands in Finland. In 2019, he issued his debut solo album This Love.
