Australian singer/songwriter Cloves made her debut with a smoky sound reminiscent of Lana Del Rey and Adele. Born Kaity Dunstan in Melbourne, Cloves started singing in public at the age of 12, performing in dive bars with her big sister and older bandmates. Belying her age, her voice added a gravity and old-soul feel to her music; she cited Amy Winehouse, Etta James, and Fiona Apple as major influences. Choosing her stage name after a trip to Bali, Cloves recorded her debut material with producers Justin Parker (Lana Del Rey, Sia, Rihanna) and Rich Cooper (Tom Odell, Mumford & Sons). Her first EP, XIII, was released in 2016 and featured her minimalist acoustic stylings woven beneath her rich voice. That year, her song "Don't Forget About Me" was also featured on the soundtrack to the film Me Before You. She followed her EP with "Better Now," the first single from her debut album, which added pounding drums to her usual downtempo delivery. Another single, "California Numb," appeared in 2017, followed by "Bringing the House Down" in 2018.

Purveyors of full-bodied, cleanly crafted indie pop, Sydney trio Middle Kids burst onto the scene in 2016 off the back of their first single and a starry endorsement from none other than Elton John. Classically trained piano player Hannah Joy and multi-instrumentalist Tim Fitz first met in 2014, and Fitz began to produce her solo work as well as playing in her band. Following a series of Bandcamp solo releases for Joy, the pair recruited drummer and Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Jazz Performance graduate Harry Day to join them in 2016 as their songwriting became increasingly collaborative. Before they'd even played their first show, the newly formed trio set about recording their debut single, "Edge of Town." They received an immediate boost to their profile after Elton John aired it on his Beats 1 radio show, added it to his playlist, and called himself a fan. They achieved further exposure when they won FBI Radio's Northern Lights competition, which earned them a spot on the bill at the Iceland Airwaves Music Festival in Reykjavik. Keen to put out their first extended-play release, the trio gathered together tracks like "Doing It Right," which was recorded at Parliament Studios along with "Edge of Town," and a number of other compositions recorded in Joy and Fitz's garage. Their self-titled six-track EP appeared in early 2017, and featured songs full of lo-fi charm matched with big pop hooks. Middle Kids spent the remainder of the year touring extensively, supporting Cold War Kids on their U.S. tour and performing at SXSW and the Great Escape Festival. The single "Mistake" appeared in early 2018, followed in May of that year by the album Lost Friends. By October of that year, the group was already back with new music, offering the single "Salt Eyes" which they recorded at Ryan Adams' PAX-AM studio. 2019 brough additional singles "Real Thing" and "Beliefs and Prayers."

A fiery post-hardcore unit based out of Tampa Bay, Florida, Limbs employ a punishing blend of caustic riffs, explosive blastbeats, and eerie atmospherics. Since coming together in 2013, the band has gone from being regional noisemakers to becoming the first American group to sign with Australian heavy music indie UNFD. Formed in 2013 under a different moniker, the band underwent a number of personnel changes before settling on a core lineup consisting of Chris Costanza (vocals), Daniel Nelson (drums), Josh Kowalski (bass), and guitarists Jordan Hunter and Tyler Martin. The band issued its debut EP, Admissions, in 2014, followed by a second EP, Sleep, in 2017, the latter of which was produced by Underoath's Tim McTague and released via Equal Vision Records. The following year saw Limbs ink a deal with Aussie hardcore label UNFD -- home to Northlane and In Hearts Wake -- and issue their full-length debut, Father's Son, which was produced by Saosin guitarist Beau Burchell.

Although many associate hard rock from Los Angeles in the early '80s as all glossed up and pop-based (Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Quiet Riot, etc.), there were a select few true metal bands to emerge from the same locale, such as Armored Saint. Formed in 1982 and originally comprising John Bush (vocals), David Pritchard (guitar), Phil Sandoval (guitar), Joey Vera (bass), and Gonzo Sandoval (drums, brother of Phil), the group specialized in a style of straight-ahead metal that was compared to such New Wave of British Heavy Metal acts as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Saxon, among others. The quintet issued a three-track self-titled EP on the Metal Blade label in 1983 before signing on with Chrysalis. They put out such underappreciated releases as 1984's March of the Saint, 1985's Delirious Nomad, and 1987's Raising Fear, and built a fanatical following in their native region, but failed to break through to the big time elsewhere.

Shortly after a switch back to the Metal Blade label in the late '80s, Armored Saint issued their first live recording, 1989's Saints Will Conquer, but bad news was lurking right around the corner. Founding guitarist Pritchard was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away in 1990. The group pressed on (with newcomer Jeff Duncan taking Pritchard's spot in the lineup), issuing Symbol of Salvation in 1991. But the band decided to call it a day a year later when Bush accepted an invitation to join New York thrash metallists Anthrax. By the late '90s, Armored Saint decided to reunite once more and Bush remained a member of Anthrax and Armored Saint simultaneously (Vera was also doing double duty, as he'd become a member of prog-metallists Fates Warning). The newly re-formed outfit issued an all-new recording in 2000, Revelation, while a double-disc anthology, Nod to the Old School, surfaced a year later. A decade later in 2010, the band released La Raza, their sixth full-length studio album, on Metal Blade, followed in 2015 by Win Hands Down. In 2017, the band issued the PledgeMusic-funded Carpe Noctum, a concert LP recorded at the band's 2015 Wacken festival set, as well as their headlining show in Aschaffenburg, Germany.

A band whose music has matured from pop-punk to emo to indie rock, Tigers Jaw have earned a growing following for their melodic but insistent music and emotionally powerful lyrics. Tigers Jaw were formed in 2005 in Scranton, Pennsylvania by guitarist and vocalist Adam McIlwee and guitarist and vocalist Ben Walsh. The two began working up material and recruited bassist Dennis Mishko and drummer Mike May; a keyboard player dropped out before the group's first show, and through mutual friends, Brianna Collins was invited to join the lineup. Several months later, Mike May left the band, and Pat Brier took over on drums, solidifying the band's membership. In 2006, Tigers Jaw recorded their first album, Belongs to the Dead, on a portable recording rig in an attic where the band rehearsed; the album was released by Summersteps Records, and in 2008, they went into the studio with producer and engineer Joe Loftus to cut their second full-length, simply titled Tigers Jaw, for Photobooth Records. Tigers Jaw's popularity began to spread, despite the group's touring opportunities being limited by the members' academic commitments, and in 2010, they signed with Run for Cover Records, which brought out their third album, Two Worlds. (Run for Cover would also reissue the band's first two albums.) A split EP with the group Balance & Composure was also released the same year, and Tigers Jaw would release split singles with like-minded bands the Sidekicks, Tiny Empires, and Code Orange over the next few years. In 2013, Tigers Jaw released a new single, "Hum" b/w "Cool," but the group soon made the announcement that Adam McIlwee, Dennis Mishko, and Pat Brier were leaving the lineup, and the band was going on hiatus. While many believed Tigers Jaw was breaking up, Ben Walsh and Brianna Collins made it clear they were keeping the group together, and they set out on a tour with the help of guest musicians Derrick Sherman (guitar), Andrew Fisher (bass), and James Fisher (drums). McIlwee, Mishko, and Brier agreed to rejoin Tigers Jaw in the studio to complete their fourth album, and Charmer was released in the spring of 2014. Spin, the band's much anticipated fifth studio long-player, was released in May 2017; their first to be recorded as a duo, it was also their major-label debut, being the first release on producer Will Yip's Atlantic imprint Black Cement Records.

You Need Wheels (ToTP)

"You Need Wheels (ToTP)" music video by The Merton Parkas
Added: 23-10-2020
Genre : Rock & Alternative
Description : The Merton Parkas 'You Need Wheels' TOTP (1989)

Broadcast on 09/08/1989

-

The Merton Parkas were a mod revival band, formed in the Merton area of South London in the mid-1970s, by Danny Talbot (vocals and guitar), his brother, Mick Talbot (keyboards), Neil Hurrell (bass) and Simon Smith (drums).

The group was discovered playing in a pub in Clapham, South London, by Alan Anger, a punk journalist, and signed with the independent record label, Beggars Banquet. They originally called themselves "The Sneekers", and were one of a group of power pop bands that included The Pleasers. The Merton Parkas released a few moderately successful singles, such as: "You Need Wheels", "Plastic Smile", "Give it to Me Now" and "Put Me in the Picture". They also released one album, Face in the Crowd. Rick Buckler of The Jam played with the band at Ronnie Scotts, and Mick Talbot played on "Heatwave", a track on The Jam's 1979 album Setting Sons.

The Merton Parkas also appeared at the Bridge House, Canning Town, but due to contractual disputes between record labels, did not feature on the 1979 album Mods Mayday. However the un-released recording of their set at the Bridge House can be found on YouTube.

The band's most notable track was "You Need Wheels", which reached #40 in the UK Singles Chart in the summer of 1979. As this was their only success in that chart, they are regarded as one-hit wonders in the UK.

After The Merton Parkas disbanded in 1980, Mick Talbot went on to play with Dexys Midnight Runners, The Bureau, and The Style Council. Simon Smith joined the psychedelic revival band, Mood Six.

The album was produced primarily by the Weeknd, along with a variety of producers such as DaHeala, Illangelo, Max Martin and Metro Boomin, all of whom the Weeknd had worked with previously. The standard edition has no features, although the remixes edition contains guest appearances from Chromatics and Lil Uzi Vert.

After Hours received generally positive reviews from music critics, with some naming it the Weeknd's best work. It debuted atop the US Billboard 200, earning 444,000 album-equivalent units of which 275,000 were in pure sales. The album was the Weeknd's fourth number-one album and stayed atop the Billboard 200 for four consecutive weeks. It also reached number one in 20 other countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom. After Hours will be promoted with the After Hours Tour, which is set to span North America and Europe.

On October 22, 2020, a music video for the album's second track "Too Late" was released.

Representing Houston's Third Ward, rapper Fat Tony weaves thoughtful and creative rhymes atop inspired production like André 3000, Murs, and Vince Staples. Born Anthony Lawson Jude Ifeanyichukwu Obiawunaotu (and sometimes known simply as Anthony Jude Obi), the Nigerian-American MC grew up influenced as much by E-40, Lil' Flip, and A Tribe Called Quest as the Ramones, Black Flag, and Bikini Kill. After winning the Houston Press Music Award for Best Underground Hip-Hop three years in a row, he released his debut full-length, RABDARGAB, in 2010. Produced by frequent collaborator Tom Cruz (Supreeme), the album received the chopped-up remix treatment the following year on SCREWDARGAB. He later appeared as a guest on tracks by A$AP Rocky ("Get Lit") and Das Racist ("Luv It Mayne"), the latter also appearing on his debut with a verse from Murs. In 2012, Tony teamed up with Cruz for the joint effort Double Dragon (Young One Records). His sophomore LP arrived a year later. Written and recorded in less than a week, Smart Ass Black Boy included the singles "BKNY" and "Hood Party" with Kool A.D. and Despot. In the following years, he focused on releasing singles, starting with "No More" b/w "Love Me" in 2014 and "H-Town to L.A." and "Sushi" with Asher Roth in 2015. Look, a three-track EP recorded with producer P. Morris, was issued in 2016. Tony's third full-length, MacGregor Park, was released in the summer of 2017.
